Baptism: Charles Ellis
Baptism date 16 May 1794
Residence Maidstone, Kent, England
Father's name Henry Ellis
Mother's name Susanna

There are many trees that have Charles' parents as George Ellis and Sarah Hall.  This does not appear correct - especially when the names of the children are considered.   The correct parents seem to be Henry Ellis and Susannah Fowler.

Charles was an ironmonger of Maidstone. Charles was the son of Henry Ellis a grocer of Maidstone and who came from a long line of shop keepers.

Charles Ellis and son Charles Ellis Junior seem to keep cropping up together.

By 1840 Charles is a magistrate and by 1860 a Charles Ellis is  Mayor of Maidstone and has been sitting on the Town Council. Following this there are several more terms where a Charles Harris is also Mayor and this is his son Charles Junior 1864, 1872 and 1878 and also an Alderman.

Charles Senior was at one point president of the Mechanics Institute and trustee for the management of charities. He is also found taking control of debtor's assets, along with others, and getting debts paid off.

Charles Ellis died Dec 1870 aged it is said aged 77 at Rocky Hill Terrace Maidstone, being one of the most influential and respected men of the town in his time - as per The Kentish Gazette.

From a grave inscription in All Saints Cemetery Maidstone the following information may be gleaned

John Fowler died aged 64 31st March 1794 and his wife Elizabeth Fowler died 10th Dec 1761. Their daughter Susannah Ellis [nee Fowler] died 6th Nov 1798 aged 40 and her husband Henry died 12th Dec 1806 aged 54. Their daughter Sussanah died aged 22 26th Oct 1810.

Buried in the same grave is Henry Ellis son of Charles and Catherine Ellis died 9th June 1843 aged 16 and Henry is named also as grandson of Henry and Sussanah.

Henry Ellis was apparently a Magistrate as well as Grocer

It seems that from the will of John Fowler dated March 1794 and the executors named therein that John Tyrell was his son in law, later a bankrupt, and an ironmonger. Henry Ellis a grocer was also his son in law who along with Edward Rusell another grocer who is not named as son in law. John Fowler had another child Richard who had died leaving two girls Elizabeth and Susannah who look like minors and basically get it all at the end of the reckoning. John seemed very concerned they were to be well provided for.

According to his daughter Isabella Barr Auchinvole Harris's marriage certificate her father George was a Minister.  Her father George Harris was the minister who married Isabella in Hanover square, Newcastle upon Tyne.

George Harris claimed he was descended from Oliver Cromwell through the daughter Bridget who married Ireton.  They were originally from Swansea, South Wales.  George Harris's father, Abraham was a minister of the "Protestant Dissentary" which was the original name of the Congregationalists.  He had four brothers called Moses, Aaron, Arthur and Rees.  He lived at Maidstone.

George Harris: A Memoir
Chapter II
Youth and Opening Ministry
"George Harris was born at Maidstone, Kent, on the 15th May, in the year of 1794. His father was the Rev. Abraham Harris, Minister of the Presbyterian Chapel, Earl Street, Maidstone. His mother was Hannah, only daughter and child of John Polhill, Southwark.
Mr Harris was accustomed to claim descent from Oliver Cromwell. He believed he could trace this descent both on his father's and mother's sides. I am informed that he was certainly in error as to his mother's side, although a Thomas Polhill belonging to his mother's family married a daughter of Henry Ireton by Oliver Cromwell's daughter Bridget. The Polhills were a distinguished family in the counties of Kent, Sussex and Bedfordshire, and this Thomas Polhill belonged to a different branch of the family from that with which Mr Harris was immediately connected. The Kentish Polhills have resided in the county from at least as early as the 14th century. As to the descent from Cromwell on the father's side, I am not able to speak for or against it. Mr Harris had an earthenware porringer which was said to have been used by Oliver when a boy. It was given him by a Welsh aunt, and she had convinced him that the Harris family could claim alliance with the Protector. The porringer was highly prized and religiously cared for - as it ought to have been; for whatsoever connects us, even though it be by a link of the faintest probability, with the heroes and saints of the past, strengthens in our hearts that love for liberty and virtue by means of which we also may contribute to the benefit of our kind. I have no doubt that, though George Harris would have blushed to bring his name side by side with that of Cromwell, it was with an honest pride that, in his many battles for the truth, he imagined it to be the brave old blood he felt tingling in his veins.
Rev Abraham Harris was a native of Swansea He settled in Maidstone very early in life "

Rev. George Harris (b. 1794 in Maidstone, Co. Kent, England - d. Dec. 24, 1859 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Unitarian minister, orator and social reformer. Considered the father of Unitarianism in Scotland. Preached at Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Was a prolific writer on religion (e.g. Christian Pilot) and social issues. Believed to be buried in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, possibly at the Hanover Square Chapel in Newcastle. His wife was Betty Auchinvole of Glasgow.

Rev George Harris had eight children - of whom six out of the whole number survived him.  He died on 24 December 1859 in Newcastle.

Renshaw Street Chapel - Lancashire
The Rev. George Harris entered upon his duties as pastor in succession on July 12th, 1817. Mr. Harris was born at Maidstone, in Kent, May 15th, 1794, his father being the Rev. Abraham Harris, a Dissenting minister. In November, 1812, he entered the Glasgow University, to be educated for the ministry. It was while Mr. Harris was touring in England to raise funds for a contemplated chapel at Greenock that he was brought under the notice of the Liverpool congregation, mainly through the influence of the Rev. Thomas Belsham. Shortly after his arrival in Liverpool he commenced the delivery of Sunday evening lectures on doctrinal subjects, which created quite a sensation in the town, and gave rise to a heated controversy, in which many eminent ministers of all shades of theological thought took part.

HARRIS, George. On account of his pronounced Unitarianism, he was called by Calvinists in Scotland "The Devil's Chaplain." His father was for upwards of forty years Unitarian minister at Maidstone. George Harris was a hard toiler in the Unitarian cause, travelling much in its interests, and noted for his brave and fearless preaching of the Unitarian doctrines. Died December 24, 1859, age 65.

English Unitarianism produced some remarkable scholars, e.g. John Kenrick (1788 - 1877), James Yates (1789 - 1871), Samuel Sharpe (1799 - 1881), but few very popular preachers, though George Harris (1794 -1859) forms an exception. Overt Unitarianism has never had much vogue in Scotland. The only congregation of old foundation is at Edinburgh, founded in 1776 by a secession from one of the “fellowship societies” formed by James Fraser, of Brea (1639 - 1699). The mission enterprises of Richard Wright (1764 - 1836) and George Harris (1794 - 1859) produced results of no great permanence.

Harris, George, 1794-1859, Unitarian minister, born at Maidstone, in Kent, was a son of Abraham Harris, Unitarian minister at Swansea. He was one of the originators of the Scottish Unitarian Association, and acted for three years as its secretary. He laboured in the ministry at Liverpool, Bolton, Glasgow, and elsewhere. He was constantly writing, lecturing, or preaching, and took a prominent part in political, educational, and social questions. {Diet. Nat. Biog.)

Dictionary of National Biography, 1885-1900, Volume 25 by Thomas Boston Johnstone
HARRIS, GEORGE (1794–1859), unitarian minister, born at Maidstone in Kent on 15 May 1794, was son of Abraham Harris, unitarian minister at Swansea for upwards of forty years. George was at the age of fourteen placed in a Manchester warehouse in Cheapside, London, but, wishing to enter the unitarian ministry, gave up his place at a considerable pecuniary sacrifice. In his eighteenth year he entered the Islington Academy, then under the superintendence of John Evans (1767–1827) [q.v.] . In November 1812 he matriculated at Glasgow University, having obtained a bursary on the foundation of Dr. Williams's trust, and attended classes in Glasgow during three winter sessions. His studies were much interrupted by numerous engagements as a preacher and lecturer. The Scottish Unitarian Association was formed in July 1813. Harris was one of its originators, and was for three years its secretary. He also spent much time in establishing unitarian churches, principally in Paisley, Greenock, and neighbouring towns, and in directing unitarian stations, now numbering forty-two, in different parts of Scotland. In 1816 he issued ‘A Statement of the Principles of Unitarian Christianity addressed to the Inhabitants of Greenock and Port Glasgow, and to the Friends of Free Inquiry throughout Scotland, by a Unitarian,’ a clear and concise manual of unitarian teaching. By his exertions a unitarian chapel was erected in Port Glasgow. It was opened by him in January 1822; the sermon which he preached on the occasion was published. At this period he also published ‘Select Pieces for Reading and Recitation.’

In April 1817 Harris was invited to become minister of Renshaw Street Chapel, Liverpool, then vacant by the resignation of the Rev. Robert Lewin. He was inducted in July, and his strong convictions soon engaged him in numerous controversies. Many even of his own brethren censured his imprudent and needlessly severe attacks on evangelical doctrine. His pamphlet, ‘Unitarianism, the only Religion which can become Universal,’ and a course of Sunday evening lectures, afterwards published with notes and an appendix in an octavo volume, under the title of ‘Unitarianism and Trinitarianism contrasted,’ called forth trenchant replies. Dr. James Barr of Oldham Street Presbyterian Church, Dr. John Stewart of Mount Pleasant Secession Church, and Mr. Jones of St. Andrew's Church were his most prominent opponents. In 1818 Harris planned a ‘Unitarian Christian Association’ for the dissemination of unitarian literature, and he travelled through Lancashire and Cheshire to gain for it sympathy and support.

In the summer of 1821 a division occurred in the Bank Street unitarian congregation, Bolton, and in 1822 Harris accepted an invitation to become minister of the seceders. They first met at the Cloth Hall, but in 1823 the Moor Lane Church was purchased from the Scottish presbyterians. Harris was known in Manchester as ‘the intrepid champion of Socinianism.’ In 1822 he published ‘The Lancashire and Cheshire Unitarian Association, and the Christian Reflector vindicated;’ in 1823 he published an account of the formation of the Moor Lane congregation, some statements in which provoked replies from other clergymen; and in 1824 appeared ‘Christianity defended.’ In 1824 a speech by him in Manchester led to a long correspondence, which was afterwards published under the title of ‘The Manchester Socinian Controversy,’ and indirectly caused the famous Dame Hewley suit [see Hewley, Sarah].

In September 1825 Harris resigned his charge in Bolton, and removed to Glasgow, his wife's native place. He preferred the call to Glasgow to one from London, ‘because,’ he said, ‘he wished to stand in the front of the battle.’ The evangelical revival led by Chalmers was then at its height, but Harris attracted immense audiences, and during the sixteen years of his Glasgow ministry obtained for unitarian principles a position of prominence not hitherto reached in Scotland.

In 1841 Harris removed to Edinburgh to assist in reviving the unitarian congregation. He laboured for four years, though not so successfully as in Glasgow, and in 1845 he accepted an invitation to become the minister of Hanover Square Chapel, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Here he showed much of his youthful enthusiasm and energy; he was eminently successful, a handsome and commodious church being erected in 1854, and a large congregation gathered. He died on 24 Dec. 1859.

Harris was constantly writing, lecturing, or preaching, and advocating Sunday-schools, benevolent funds, tract and book societies, and institutions for mutual improvement. He threw himself into many political and sanitary, educational, and moral movements. He was a keen radical, active for the repeal of the corn laws, on behalf of which he drew up the first petition sent from Scotland. Upon the Rathcormac ‘massacre’ in Ireland in the seizure of tithes (18 Dec. 1834), he denounced church establishments with great vigour, and took an active share in promoting many other movements. Though decidedly combative, he was naturally genial and warm-hearted. He had a fine presence, a clear, forcible style, and much natural oratory. In Scotland he was called ‘the devil's chaplain,’ to which it was replied: ‘The Prince of Darkness must be a gentleman if his chaplains are like George Harris.’ His chief publications, in addition to the works already named, were: 1. ‘The Great Business of Life,’ 1847. 2. ‘Christian Unitarianism New Testament Christianity,’ 1848. 3. ‘The Doctrine of the Trinity,’ 1853. 4. ‘The Christian Character, as illustrated in the Life and Labours of the late Rev. William Turner,’ 1859. For twenty-one years Harris was editor of the ‘Christian Pilot and Pioneer.’

John Polhill Harris emigrated to Chicago in 1853.

John did not remain in Maidstone where he seemed to earn a living as a grocer and tea dealer. In 1840 he was on Havock Lane Maidstone.  What prompted his departure for America is not known.  Apparently he set sail from Liverpool with his family aboard the Leviathon, sailing under Captain Knapp on 8th August 1853 arriving in New York 23rd September. From there he made his way via Albany, Buffalo and Detroit to Chicago. It is unknown what family he travelled with.  It is possible that Sarah his wife, who was Sarah Stone of Leeds Yorkshire, but the marriage licence records of Canterbury seem to say the they were of the same parish, and John Polhill Harris was of Benenden Kent.  They married Dec 1833.
