Marriage Notice Date: 24 Nov 1847
Event Place: United Kingdom
Sex: Male
Marriage Date: 12 Nov 1847
Father's Name: George Harris
Spouse's Name: Mary Garrison
Spouse's Sex: Female
Spouse's Father's Name: J W Garrison

Liverpool Mercury - 23 November 1847
MARRIED.
On Tuesday, the 12th ult.. at London, Canada, Mr
John B. Harris, eldest son of the Rev. G. Harris, of
Newcaatie-upon-Tyne. to Mary, only daughter of J. W.
Garrison, Esq., of the former place.

As per the above press statement, John Barr Harris marries Mary Garrison in Canada in 1847 and then appears as a school teacher in Mississippi by 1850.  He is listed incorrectly in the 1850 census as being born in Scotland.  He has a 1 year old chid Caroline, born Mississippi(later claimed to be born Canada), together with Mary, age 24, born Canada.

By 1860 he is a book keeper but correctly identified as being born in England. Caroline is listed as being 14, born Mississippi(later claimed to be born Canada) and a George aged 12 born Mississippi.  Mary is not present, presumably deceased.

In the 1870 Census J B Harris, aged 48, a licensed Gas Co., born England, is living with Chas Thomas, aged 30, born Kentucky, C Thomas (female) aged 21, born California(sic), parents of foreign birth, and G W Harris, aged 19, born Mississippi, parents of foreign birth.  It is most likely that the C Thomas is John's daughter Caroline and Charles Thomas is her husband.  G W Harris is likely to be John's son George W Harris.  A Chas E. Thomas married a Caroline A. Harris on 11 Nov 1868 in County Warren, Mississippi.

In the 1880 census of Vicksburg, Warren, Mississippi, John B Harris, aged 56, born in England of English parents, was living with Chas B Thomas and wife Caroline, aged 29, born Canada of Canadian parents.  John B Harris was listed as Father-in-law.  There are five children of Chas and Caroline Thomas living there as well, namely: Mary, aged 11, Emma, aged 9, John aged 6,  Bessie, aged 3, , and Isabel, aged 4 months, all born Mississippi with a father from Kentucky and mother from Canada.

In the 1900 census of Oakland, Alameda, California is living:
Carrie Thomas, female, aged 49 or born 1850, in Canada and having been married for 32 years, whith her children: Mary S Thomas, born 1870; John W Thomas, born 1872; Isabella M Thomas; born 1880, Emma F Michel, born 1872 who has been married 10 years with 2 children; Bissie Frost, born 1876 having been married for 5 years with 2 children.  All the children are born Mississippi of a Kentucky father and a Canadian mother.  No Charles Thomas or John B Harris are found.

In 1854 George took up employment with Henry Fullager and Edward Smeeth. George was a coppersmith who learnt his trade with Fullager and Smeeth. By the time George went to work there they were an already well known and established firm with experience of manufacturing and working with different metals.  They were also brass founders. They had a long list of things they did, repairing locomotive flues making worms and pipes for brewery and distilling equipment were just some. Edward Smeeth and George appear in the American patent records with regard to pipes for stills. George worked for the company and Edward Smeeth for thirty years until the death of Edward Smeeth after a long illness in 1882.  In 1884 he set up his own firm with his brother Arthur under the style of George P Harris and Brother at 105/107 Fuller street Chicago. They were very successful and employed 27 men being described as ranking amongst the industrial Chicago institutions. They did jobbing work in copper but they also worked in tin and sheet iron so they were metal fabricators.  They made much improved alcohol and spirit apparatus, brewing kettles, wine distillery and brewery equipment and much more.

Arthur had worked for 16 years for Crarer Adams later Adams Westlake who supplied anything and everything for the railways he was probably well versed in metal working but he was at the production / manufacturing end so they had what is looking like plenty of experience between them and they are also basically talented in the mechanical engineering department.  It is possible the Harris track laying machine and the patent for locomotive lights may well be down to Arthur but it is only the locomotive light he can lay claim to. What they did manufacture is widely discussed and written about and high on the list is the vacuum milk pan and condenser. It is not clear if it was something that they merely improved upon or if they held the patent. Essentially it was used for producing condensed and powdered milk and it seemed that it was an integral part of the milk industry and keeps cropping up in such publications as the Milk Plant monthly.  In fact there are whole  books and publications on how this worked.

In 1896 George died leaving Arthur in the middle of a law suit and remaining to carry on as Arthur Harris and Co. This firm is still going today though they have had to modify their business in keeping with the times but they are not a tin pot affair.  In 1957 Arthur J Harris of Arthur Harris and co died aged 75.  A full obituary is in the Milk Plant Monthly.  It states that the firm was founded by his father and uncle so this man is the original Arthurs son.  Also in the firm is George C Harris brother of Arthur J., who became associated with company in 1907 and in the mix is possibly Elijah T Harris and looking like more than one of them.  An Elijah T married Florence Bloomer of Wisconsin having 5 children including another Elijah. There is an Elijah born 4th July 1888 who died March 1974 in here somewhere.

George Polhill Harris has an obituary in Vol 69 of the Chicago Journal of Commerce and Metal Industries.  He died 22nd October at his residence 1272 Washington Boulevard an old and esteemed resident and business man of Chicago.  Mr Harris came to this city 43 years ago and soon became prominent in social and commercial circles.

He was connected somehow to the fire brigade as a member of Co 5 of the Chicago fire dept.
