William JACK

William Jack's age keeps changing.

In the 1861 census he is 22 (b 1839) and living at home.
In the 1871 census he is 27 (b 1844).

He is described as a miner in both cases.

When Catherine McDonald and William Jack were married in 1861 they were 23.  William was brought up by his grandmother where he was in the 1861 and 1881 census. Note the 1861 census has him 6 months in 1861 (ie b1860) whereas the 1881 census has him as 26 (ie b1855).

10. Mary MCDONALD

Mary is in the 1871 but not as Mary mcDonald the 1881 census.  

She was living at 33 Muir St in the 1871 census.

Marriage: NELSON ROBERT MCDONALD MARY 1873 647/ 14 Hamilton
There is a marriage record of a Mary McDonald of Muir St Hamilton marrying Robert Neilson on 31 December 1872 in Hamilton.  Mary's parents were listed as James McDonald, house painter, journeyman and mother Mary McDonald m.s. Miller.  Mary was not literate and so the parents details could have been confused.  

Mary's father was a house painter (journeyman), her mother's maiden name was Millar and she lived in Muir St, Hamilton.  No other Mary McDonalds of a similar age have been found in Hamilton in the 1871 census.

Mary Nelson, aged 72, widow of Robert Nelson died on 8 January 1920 at 57 Miller Street Larkhall.  Her father was recorded as Malcolm McDonald, house painter (deceased) and mother was Jane McDonald MS Miller (deceased).  The informant was Robert Nelson,son.

13. John MCDONALD

John McDonald (b 1854) was the informant for the death of Malcolm McDonald, his father, in 1876 in Hamilton.  John McDonald (b 1854) was also the informant for the death of his nephew John Spalding, the son of William Spalding and his sister Ann McDonald, in 1876 in Hamilton.

This John McDonald's son, John McDonald (b 1884), witnessed the burial of William Spalding in Sydney 1910.

John was a painter like his father John and his grandfather Malcolm McDonald.

This John McDonald witnessed the burial of William Spalding in Sydney 1910.  

This John McDonald placed a Funeral Notice for William Spalding who was his uncle in the Sydney Morning Herald in 1910.  

This John McDonald is William Spalding's nephew.

When John married Martha Caldwell they were both living at the Spalding Family home of 30 Roseberry Street, Rozelle.  William Hannah and Ivy Spalding witnessed their marriage.

On 21 September 1911 at St Pauls Presbyterian Church, Rozelle, John McDonald, bachelor and painter aged 27 and born in Glasgow married Martha Caldwell, spinster aged 26 and born in Glasgow.  They were both living at 30 Roseberry Street, Rozelle.  John's parents were John McDonald, painter and Nellie Douglas.  Martha's parents were James Caldwell (deceased), sawyer and Bessie McMillan.  Witnesses: William Hannah and Ivy Spalding.

Myrtle Mackay (nee Spalding) remembers cousins named John and Martha McDonald. They had no children, John returned to Scotland ill and died there.

When John married Martha Caldwell they were both living at the Spalding Family home of 30 Roseberry Street, Rozelle NSW.  William Hannah and Ivy Spalding witnessed their marriage.

Myrtle Mackay (nee Spalding) remembers cousins named John and Martha McDonald. They had no children, John returned to Scotland ill and died there.

Death: 644/03 1057 1957 -  On 3 September 1957 Martha McDonald, the widow of John McDonald, a coachpainter, died in Glasgow.  She was recorded as 72, the daughter of James Caldwell, a moulding machinist (deceased) and Bessie Caldwell ms McMillan (deceased).  The informant was Robert Caldwell (brother).
