31. Jane JACK

The following is mostly extracted from Bruce Hannah's website - http://home.pacific.net.au/~hannahhome/index.html

Jane (Jeanie) Jack was born 1866 in Hamilton near Glasgow, Scotland. Her parents were William Jack and Catherine McDonald. William, a coalminer, was the son of Arthur Jack, labourer, and Jane Jackson. Catherine was the daughter of Malcolm McDonald, housepainter, and Jane Millar.

William and Catherine married on the 31st December 1861 in Leechlee Street, Hamilton, "according to the forms of the UP Church of Scotland".

Jeanie was the first daughter of William and Catherine. Older siblings were William (1860), Arthur (1862), Malcolm (1864), Mary-Ann (1869), Janet (1871), Ann (1873), John (1875), Alexander (1877) and James (1881).

She left Scotland aboard the "SS Belgic" out of Plymouth Harbour, arriving in Sydney on the 12th of September 1885. In the NSW immigration papers she is listed as Jane Jack, 18 years old. Her occupation is listed as "servant", home county as Lanark, and her religion as Presbyterian.

Jeanie listed an uncle as present in the Colony. This was most likely William Spalding her mother's brother-in-law who married Ann McDonald and migrated to Australia in 1884.

Jane Jack came to Australia with the intention (so the story goes) of marrying William Spalding b1866 (her cousin) but arrived to find William firmly attached to Maria Carr, so they introduced her to Thomas Baird Hannah who worked with William Spalding.

Marriage: NSW BDM 1957/1888  HANNAH  THOMAS  JACK  JANE  BALMAIN

Jane (Jeanie) Jack married Thomas Baird Hannah on the 23rd of March 1888. The wedding took place “according to the forms of the Presbyterian church” in the home of William and Ann Spalding, attended and witnessed by Albert Kitching and Maria Carr, who was later to marry William Spalding jnr. The ceremony was performed by Reverend James Cosh. The Spalding family were living in Rosebery Street, Balmain. William Spalding, his wife Ann and family had arrived in Sydney on 16 February 1884 in the "Stirlingshire".

Thomas and Jeanie had three children. William Alexander was born on 3rd December 1888. The address was recorded as the Brennan Estate, 15 Halloran Street, Leichhardt. Doctor Burgoyne of Balmain, and Mrs Sonter (or perhaps Souter, Thomas’s sister Jane), a nurse and neighbour also from Halloran Street, attended the birth.

Their second child, Agnes, was born on 7th September 1892. Thomas and Jeanie were then living at 120 Foucart Street, Balmain. In attendance at the birth were Doctor Davidson and Mrs Spalding.

Their last child, Catherine (Kate) was born on the 11th December 1894. Doctor Kelly and Mrs Spalding attended the birth.

On the evening of Monday the 8th of April 1895, Jeanie's husband Thomas drowned. The Daily Telegraph reported that an eyewitness alerted Balmain police that she had seen “a man” slip from the rocks after the net become tangled around his leg. The water police recovered Thomas’s body at 11 am on the following morning.

A magisterial inquest was held by JC Moore JP on the 10th April at the Carrington Hotel, Balmain. The magistrate found the drowning to be accidental, stating that “the said Thomas Baird Hannah in the waters of Roselle Bay, Annandale in the District of Sydney in the colony at one said on the 8th day of April 1895 was accidentally drowned whilst prawnfishing”. No autopsy was held. The report concluded that there was “no intemperance”, and that the deceased possessed no cash or property. He was 32 years old.

Thomas’s death certificate was witnessed by William Spalding, his cousin-in-law, of 21 Christie Street, Balmain, and his wife Jane (Jeanie), of Foucart Street, Balmain.

Sydney Morning Herald - Tuesday 25 June 1895
"BENEFIT CONCERT AT BALMAIN.
The Balmain Town Hall was attended last night by about 1000 persons on the occasion of a benefit concert to assist the widow and orphans of the late Thomas Hannah who was accidentally drowned in Rozelle Bay, Balmain, recently.  Alderman O.H. Chidgey presided. In addition to numerous vocal contributions the Balmain Coldstream Brass Band, under Mr Edward Kearnes, rendered selections.  Mr W.H. Howell was the Hon secretary."

Several years later, around 1900, Jeanie decided to return to her hometown of Hamilton, Scotland with her three children.

In March 1901 when the Hamilton census was taken, the family were living at 45 Muir Street, along with Jeanie's parents and 21 other people. Jeanie recorded her occupation as "washerwoman", the children were all recorded as scholars.

In 1901 Jeanie remarried a William Linton in Hamilton.

Scotland Marriage: LINTON WILLIAM JACK JEANIE 1901 647/ 144 Hamilton

A daughter Janet (Jessie) was born to the couple on the 7th June 1905.

The eldest child, William (Willie) didn't like his stepfather and eventually came back to Australia leaving his sister in Scotland to break the news to his fiancee that he wasn't returning to
marry her but staying in Balmain and marrying a Balmain girl named Charlotte Martha Cox.

Jeanie Jack died on Sunday the 3rd of July, 1910 at 45 Muir Street, Hamilton, at the age of 42 years. The cause of death was given as pulmonary phthisis. Her death registration was witnessed by her husband William. She was buried in Plot G597, Wellhall Cemetery, Hamilton.

Her husband, William, died on the 18th of November 1940. He was placed in the same plot.

Thomas Baird HANNAH

The following is mostly extracted from Bruce Hannah's website - http://home.pacific.net.au/~hannahhome/index.html

Thomas Baird Hannah was born at 53 Eglinton Street, Tradeston, an inner suburb of Glasgow, Scotland on 12th September 1863. His siblings were Robert (1844), Margaret (1847), Janet (1849), Agnes (1852), Jane (1854), William (1856), Mary (1859), Isabella (1861), and John Cooper (1867). Thomas was the only child born in Glasgow.

His mother Agnes died in December 1873 when he was ten years old, and his father William died in August the following year.

The 1881 census records his occupation at the age of 18 as a joiner. At that time he was living with a relative, Duncan Gilchrist, at 106 Stirling Road, Glasgow.

Thomas, aged 18,  migrated to Sydney, Australia aboard the sailing ship, "Orontes" out of the Port of London, leaving on the 24th of May, 1882. Thomas arrived in Sydney on the 19th August 1882. Thomas was an assisted passenger, his sister Margaret, already in Sydney, paying a five-pound deposit for him in the Colony on 25th January 1882. His address on leaving Glasgow was recorded as 14 Glen Street, Paisley. A reference was provided by Douglass Brennan, of Love Street, Paisley.

Thomas stated on his immigration papers that he had a sister Agnes present in the Colony.

The ships’ list records his occupation as labourer, and home place as Renfrew. It was also recorded that he could read and write and that both his parents were dead.

On the voyage, there was also an Albert Kitching, a 16 year old traveling from Yorkshire with his family. Albert was later to be a witness at Thomas’s wedding.

In October 1885 his sister Jane arrived in NSW with husband Alexander Souter and daughters Agnes and Jane.

Six years after his arrival in Sydney, Thomas married Jane (Jeanie) Jack on the 23rd of March 1888. Jane Jack was the niece of Ann Spalding, and arrived in Sydney aboard the Belgic in September 1885.

At this time Thomas declared himself to be a saw frame worker.

Thomas was aged 25, and gave his occupation as a sawyer.

Their second child, Agnes Baird, was born on 7th September 1892. Thomas and Jane were then living at 120 Foucart Street, Balmain. In attendance at the birth were Doctor Davidson and Mrs Spalding. Thomas was 29, and gave his occupation as labourer.

Their last child, Catherine (Kate) was born on the 11th December 1894. Jane recorded her name as “Jeanie”. Doctor Kelly and Mrs Spalding attended the birth.
