67. William Alexander HANNAH

Birth: NSW BDM 4510/1889  HANNAH  WILLIAM A  THOMAS  JANE  LEICHHARDT

The following is mostly extracted from Bruce Hannah's website - http://home.pacific.net.au/~hannahhome/index.html

Born on the 3rd December 1888, William Alexander was the first born and only son to Thomas Baird Hannah and Jeanie Jack. He was born at 15 Halloran St, Leichhardt. Attending the birth were Dr. Burgoyne, and Mrs Souter who was Thomas' sister.

His father was tragically drowned while prawn fishing off the rocks near the Gordon Street wharf in Rozelle Bay in 1895. In 1900 his mother Jeanie took her family and travelled back to her hometown of Hamilton, Scotland. His mother remarried and Willie didn't like his stepfather and eventually came back to Australia leaving his sister in Scotland to break the news to his fiancee that he wasn't returning to marry her but staying in Balmain.

He returned to Sydney in around 1911.  He witnessed the wedding of John McDonald and Martha Caldwell's wedding in 1911 at Rozelle. (John was Ann Spalding's nephew) By now he was 23 years of age, and a tradesman moulder. Settling back into the Balmain area he had known as a child, William boarded with a Mrs Mary Henson.

He began work with the Cockatoo Island shipyard, where William Spalding Jnr. also worked as a furnace man.

William formed a close attachment to the Spalding family. Upon the death of William Spalding Snr. several funeral notices appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald, June 16th 1913 including the following:

"Friends of the late Mr. William Spalding are kindly invited to attend his funeral to leave his late residence 30 Rosebery Street, Rozelle, this afternoon at 2 pm for Presbyterian Field of Mars"

"Friends of Mr. & Mrs. John McDonald are invited to attend the funeral of their late dearly loved uncle"

"Friends of Mr. W. Hannah are invited to attend the funeral of his late dearly loved uncle"

William was not strictly a nephew but was obviously a friend of the Spalding family.

William married Charlotte Martha Cox, on the 12th of December 1914 at St. Pauls Presbyterian Church, Rozelle.

Marriage: NSW BDM 2152/1915  HANNAH  WILLIAM A  COX  CHARLOTTE M  BALMAIN SOUTH

They lived in Tennyson Road, Gladesville, where their two children, William Cox (1915) and Charles Sutton Cox (1917) were born. Charles was named after Charlotte's brother who had been recently killed on the western front in Belgium.

At the outbreak of war, William Hannah volunteered to join up, but was refused because he was working in an essential industry.

Both sons served in the Second World War

He was a keen member of the Masonic Lodge Waratah, and together with son William progressed through all the chairs, to the position of Master. He was also a keen member of Manchester Unity of Oddfellows in which he also held a high office.

William died on the 7th of December 1962 aged 74 years, at the "House of Peace" Nursing home in Marrickville. His cause of death cancer. He was buried at the Cox family grave at the Field of Mars Cemetery, Ryde, Plot 234-237 in the Presbyterian Section, Row 10.
