horizontal rule

Thomas SPENSLEY

Thomas & Elizabeth lost two children in Reeth and then emigrated to live near their daughter, Elizabeth Ann in America. Elizabeth Ann had one son, Bonson Montford Spensley.  Elizabeth Ann then died after the birth of a second child (who didn't survive). Thomas & Elizabeth then returned to England and lived in Richmond until their deaths. They are mentioned in James L. Broderick's book on his visit to Iowa.

Grave: In memory of James Ralph only son of Thos and Elizabeth SPENSLEY of Reeth who died on the 18th July 1867 aged 19 years.
Also of Margaret Mary their daughter who died on the 10th December 1870 aged 25 years.
Also of Elizabeth Ann their last child and her infant son who died in America March 1877 aged 26 years.
Also of the above named Thomas SPENSLEY who died December 11th 1888 aged 76 years.

Thomas Spensley was a draper, living on Silver Street in Reeth. Two of his children died as young adults and their daughter Elizabeth married James Spensley, son of Richard Spensley & Alice Bonson who had emigrated to America. Elizabeth returned with James to live at Mineral Point and died following the birth of their second child. Her parents Thomas and Elizabeth (Milner) had moved to America to be near their only surviving daughter, but on her death returned to live in England. Thomas and Elizabeth are buried in Gunnerside Methodist graveyard.

Thomas left a will written 6th June 1883 in which he left property to his wife and then to grandson Bonson Montford Spensley. Should Bonson be dead, then assets were to go to children of late brother William, children of late brother Harker, Solomon Spensley, John Ralph Milner, Phillis Whitton and Alice Milner.

From brother Calvert's journal:

The second (date of birth probably 1811) acquired an ability to measure land with accuracy and to compose with tolerable correctness. At the age of 12 he professed a deep concern for the claims of religion and joined himself to the Methodist society. At 14 he was apprenticed as a draper to brother John. When John died he was sent to Manchester, where he served for a year or two with Mr. Drummond under a yoke too heavy for his physical constitution. He returned to Reeth in a prostrate condition and passed through a severe illness which well nigh destroyed his life. On his recovery he became assistant to brother William, with whom he remained until they united in partnership and in this relation toward each other they still (1850) remain.

"This brother's character is uncommon chiefly on account of the contrast it exhibits; seldom have I known a man with a more hasty and violent temper, nor one more assiduous in the acquisition of wealth. His powers of contrivance are exhausted in devising means of saving; in this habit he has attained a high degree of perfection. In some instances his propensity has betrayed him into meanness, if not into the perpetration of dishonourable actions. The last hours of my mother were not unmolested by dastardly manifestations of his acquisitiveness. Yet strange to narrate, he has been known to give as much as 10 pounds at a time to objects of benevolence. He has spent a large portion of his time in teaching singing gratis. For several years he has been superintendent of the Sunday School. As secretary and trustee of chapels he has been often employed. The officers of society and circuit steward have been repeatedly entrusted to his management. For nearly 20 years he has been leader of a class, and for several years he has exercised in the capacity of a local preachers The clerkship of the Reeth savings bank he has long held.

"Strict integrity in all matters of business has ever characterized his proceedings. His intellect has never shone to great advantage, partly no doubt because his speech is contemptible; he has not only a bad articulation but is prone to stammer, especially when the equanimity of his temper is disturbed, which unhappily is too often the case. In business matters his perception is keen. Veneration is prominent in religious exercises. The emotial predominates in his religious feelings, especially when the passions are operated upon while the reason is informed. For music he has ever displayed a vast fondness, in the study and practice of which he had spent a large portion of his life; but more particularly those portions which were not available for making money. He is not slow to do a brotherly act of kindness if the demand is upon his bodily energies and spare time. The fact is he has many excellent traits of mind and character, which would render him most estimable were they not so constantly under the tyrannical control of base avariciousness."
