Baptism SP: MCMILLAN ANN, father - THOMAS MCMILLAN, mother - MARGARET DIXON FR1814 (FR1814) F 21/05/1836 648/ 60 235 Lanark

Marriage: In the Parish of Cambusnethan, Lanark, on 18th January 1858 at Newmains after Bans was solemnised according to the terms of the church of Scotland; James Scott, aged 20 of Newmains, a Clerk and bachelor, father - John Scott, mason, mother - Sarah Lochhead (deceased), to Ann McMillan, aged 22, spinster of Newmains, father - Thomas McMillan, Smith, mother - Margaret Dickson.  Witnesses: Alexander Baird, Thomas McMillan.

Note: No record of these parents of James Scott has been identified.  No family with a John as father or Sarah as a mother of a James Scott could be found in the 1841 census results in Bothwell. It would appear that John Scott and Sarah Lochhead were actually James' grandparents.  See notes of James Scott.

Death: In the Parish of Cambusnethan, Lanark, Ann Scott married to James Scott, clerk at Iron Works, died on 27th December 1872 at the Cottages, Newmains. She was aged 36. Father Thomas McMillan, blacksmith (journeyman), mother Margaret McMillan m.s. Dickson (deceased). Informant James Scott, widower, present.

Ann's death closely followed the birth of her child Sarah who was born on 13 November 1872.  Sarah died in 1873.

In the 1861 census of Kilmarnock, there is a Thomas McMillan born Lanarkshire, aged 20, a blacksmith is a boarder with the Lucas family.

His father Thomas, aged 46, a blacksmith was living in Newmains, Cambusnethan in the 1861 census.

This Thomas was the informant on his grandfather Thomas McMillan's death registration in 1861.  At this time his address was New Lanark, Lanarkshire.

It is thus highly likely that the Thomas the subject of the above decree was this Thomas, who was described in 1860 as Thomas McMillan Junior, Blacksmith, son of and residing with Thomas McMillan Senior (Blacksmith), Newmains nr Wishaw.

Possible Marriage: MCMILLAN THOMAS, BROWN CATHERINE, 1862, 628/ 87, Cambusnethan

Scotland, Select Marriages, 1561-1910
Thos. Mcmillan
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 05 Dec 1862
Marriage Place: Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland
Spouse: Catherine Brown
FHL Film Number: 6035516

Marriage: At Brown Street, Newmains on 5th December 1862 in the Parish of Cambusnethan, Lanark, Thomas McMillan, Blacksmith, bachelor, aged 22 of 3 James St Gorbals, father Thomas McMillan, blacksmith, mother Ellison (sic) McMillan m.s - not listed, married Catherine Brown, domestic servant, spinster, aged 20, of 30 Scotland St, Glasgow, father - John Brown, Oversman (coal) in Pit, mother Ellison Brown m.s. McFarlane.  Witnesses: William McMillan, Jane Brown.

This makes Thomas born about 1840 and Catherine in 1842.  There are numerous trees on the internet that have the above Thomas' mother as Allison Eunson.  This is hardly credible as she would have been aged 11 when Thomas was born!  It is feasible that Thomas' recorded mother is incorrect in that his wife's mother was Ellison and the recorder confused his notes and did not record the maiden surname either.  I believe his mother was Margaret Dickson.

According to burial register Thomas went to New Zealand on about 1885. But he is not found in the Scotland 1881 census.  His son Thomas' burial information has him coming to New Zealand in 1881 - which is more likely.

Thomas and Catherine McMillan emigrated to Otago with their seven children in 1880 on the Marlborough and they settled in Dunedin.
