In the 1861 Census in Hamilton at 7 John Street (the same address of Barbara and son Francis in the 1851 census) is recorded as:

Jessie Cowin, grand daughter, 12, female, cotton Tambourer, born Hamilton

It seems credible that the first line entry is in error:
*No Francis Gilchrist of that age can be found in the 1851 census
*Barabra Gilchrist is still alive in 1861 but can't be found
*Francis is Barbara's son as in the 1851 census.
*Jessie Cowan is likely to be Barbara's granddaughter as her daughter Grace Gilchrist married David Cowan in 1838.
It is possible the first line should have been:
Barbara Gilchrist, head, Widow, 88, female, born Hamilton.

Note that Barbara's death registration of 1866 has her grandson reporting that her father's name was Abraham, and that she was aged 94.  There is no record of a Barbara Torrance being born about 1772 having a father of Abraham.  It is likely that Barbara's grandfather (not father) was Abraham with her father being Robert.

It is likely she the daughter of Robert.
