Duncan WEBB

Duncan was born 16th July 1854 and died Feb 9th 1936 at his residence Morningside Fairfield Droylsden Manchester  that he inherited form his father in law Daniel McGregor who held 11 shares in the family business and was a JP.  The McGregors were wealthy Calico manufacturers in Scotland and the Webb were not paupers either.  Duncan left Pounds 70,000 at death.  Duncan was a son of Thomas George Webb 1827 -1901 and Ann Patterson Rae and one of 11 children. Thomas George left only Pounds 355 at death and in view of the size of the estates of his own father and son he probably had been redistributing his money in order to avoid death duties. Ann Patterson Rae Webb was born Cummertree Dumfries 28th Jan 1830 -1905 buried Manchester General Cemetery. Thomas George was also buried at Manchester General Cemetery

The family firm of the Duncans was Molineux[variable spellings] and Webb of Manchester glass manufacturers. They were the oldest and one of the major glass manufacturers situated in Manchester. They originally had blown glass blowers and had by 1846 registered their first pressed glass design. They produced high quality products that are today highly collectible. The company firstly began manufacturing in 18th June 1827 at Canal Street New   Islington, Manchester. The firm was also known as Manchester Flint Glass works and were eventually operating in Ancoats Manchester.  It displayed its wares in The Great Exibition in 1851 and made a lot of table ware but also made exquisite pieces of glass. This firm was highly successful, opening showrooms in London to display their wares. Examples of their work are displayed in The Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Duncan Webb born 1854 was the son of Thomas George Webb grandson son of original Thomas Webb born 1797. Thomas George ran the company until about 1887 probably at that point other members of the family were involved who no doubt had been cutting their teeth in the family firm and biding their time. Duncan was handed the company and his elder brother Baden was Co Sec and in 1916 Duncan Webb transferred shares to his own son Duncan Webb Jnr  1890- 1947 who was the last of the family in this firm in the end overseeing its demise. The company struggled from this point on and was liquidated in 1929.  Pamela daughter of Duncan Webb Jnr sold family glass pieces and pattern books at auction in London and donated further glass pieces to Manchester Art Gallery on her death in 2008.

Duncan Junior died 21st Oct 1947 in Caernarvon Wales though he spent most time living in Ormskirk and Southport far from the business and he was sinking under a mountain of debt. In 1932 he was bankrupt and in 1933 he breached his bankruptcy order on several counts thus not endearing himself to the courts.  Despite being left half of his father's estate even this couldn't sort his debts out. In 1939 Duncan couldn't repay a loan of Pounds 236 and ended up in court along with wife and son who were guarantors of the loan.  They were also unable to pay their solicitors costs and to add to his misery his son Collin was killed in the war as was his son in law who was married to daughter Pamela.
