66. John SCOTT

Scotland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
John Scott
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 31 Mar 1858
Birth Place: Cambusnethan,Lanark,Scotland
Father: James Scott
Mother: Ann Mcmillan
FHL Film Number: 6035516

Julia and John Scott aged 52 and 53 respectively are in the 1911 census at Borthwick Midlothian.  No children are present.

There are some inconsistencies with this John Scott.  On his marriage registration of 1881 and his death registration of 1937 his father's name is listed as John Scott, Iron Master, and mother Ann McMillan.  His father should havce been James Scott, Clerk at Iron Works.

On his marriage registration he is listed as a Medical Student but on his death registration he was listed as a Coal Pithead worker.  On the census records of 1881, 1891 and 1901 he was listed as a Clerk at iron works, Merchantile Clerk, Commercial Clerk.

It is interesting to note that there was a legal case between John Scott (the eldest son of James Scott of Plevna who died 4 March 1901) against the 4 other children of James Scott who were claiming that a discharge of John Scott's right to an inheritance from his father should stand as he was given benefits during his life. "Scott's Trustees V. Scott". There is no mention of the second family of James Scott.

Of: Coltness, , Lanarkshire, Scotland

National Bible Society of Scotland in 1893 — Cambusnethan Auxiliary — President, James Houldsworth of Coltness

In Henry Houldsworth's (b1797-d1868) will which was written in 1866 James was described as the eldest son.

James married Catherine Jane McGRATH, daughter of Canon McGRATH, on 12 May 1858. (Catherine Jane McGRATH died on 2 Mar 1931)

THE STEUARTS OF COLTNESS AND ALLANTON p51
..Sir Henry B. Steuart, of Collairnie, Fifeshire, succeeded as fifth Baronet of Coltness, the property itself passing, by purchase, in 1842 to Thomas Houldsworth then M.P. for Nottingham.  Mr Houldsworth died in 1852, when Coltness went first to his eldest brother, William, then to Henry, father of another Henry, at whose death, in 1868, the property passed to its present owner, James Houldsworth, Esq., born 1825. (see W. Promphrey's "Old Lairds of Coltness" Wishaw, 1879).

The Houldsworths lived in the imposing Coltness House until the 1950s. The mansion then became a residential school run by Barnardo's until the late 1970s when it was used briefly as a refugee resettlement centre for Vietnamese Boat People. The building lay empty for several years, was badly vandalised and severely damaged in a fire. It was eventually demolished in the early 1980s to make way for the Woodlandsgate estate built by Barratt Homes. The former stables of Coltness House were retained and converted to flats.

Coltness, an estate, with a mansion, in Cambusnethan parish, Lanarkshire. The mansion, near the left bank of South Calder Water,  mile N of Wishaw, is a large and handsome edifice, with modern renovations, and contains a picture gallery nearly 200 feet long. The estate, having passed from the Somervilles in 1553 to Sir Robert Logan of Restalrig, came a century later to Sir James Steuart, twice Lord Provost of Edinburgh, who brought up Archbishop Leighton, and whose chaplain Hugh Mackail, the martyred Covenanter, was captured here in 1666; his grandson, Sir Jas. Steuart, second Bart. (1681-1727), was Solicitor-General for Scotland; and his great-grandson, Sir James Denham Steuart (1713-80), was a zealous Jacobite and an able political economist. The baronetcy became extinct in 1839; and Coltness was then the property of James Houldsworth, Esq. (b. 1825; suc. 1868), who owned 3717 acres in the shire, valued at 11,498 pounds per annum.

In 1883 a James Houldsworth purchased Castlebank. He was a son of the founder of the Coltness Ironwork Company (who had moved his family from Northamptonshire to Coltness in 1836).

Coltness Memorial Church was erected and endowed by James Houldsworth, Laird of Coltness, and his wife Katherine Janet in affectionate remembrance of their eldest son Henry Herbert Houldsworth who was born on 24th January 1865 and died on 15th May 1876. Mr and Mrs Houldsworth were of the belief that the erection of a church would provide for the spiritual necessities of the locality, whilst at the same time associating it with the memory of their beloved son, and that it would be a fitting gift to the district.
The cost of building the church was between 7,000 and 8,000 pounds.

Obituary.-Most of our readers will have learned with unfeigned sorrow of the death of Henry Herbert, eldest son of Mr Houldsworth of Coltness, which occurred at Brighton on Monday last, after three days' illness. Master Houldsworth was a bright and singularly promising boy of eleven years of age, but gifted with acuteness and intelligence much beyond his years. Up to his last illness, he had enjoyed exceptionally good health. He seemed to have inherited in an eminent degree, so far as all with whom he came in contact could judge, the amiable and generous qualities possessed by the bereaved parents, and which have for long endeared the house of Houldsworth to the community and neighbourhood. We believe the cause of death was an acute attack of scarlatina, and throughout his brief illness the little sufferer bore up with manly fortitude. This mournful visitation has come with appalling suddenness upon Mr and Mrs Houldsworth and family; and we feel assured that many a feeling heart beats in sympathy with them in this their dark hour of trial and sad bereavement.

83. Sir William Henry HOULDSWORTH

Mr. (later Sir) William Houldsworth of Coodham.

Sir William Houldsworth (Sir, 1st Bt (created 1887))
MP for Manchester 1883-1885; and Manchester N.W. 1885-1906.
Created a Baronet on 20 Jul 1887
He was honored for hon LLD Manchester University.

The other major development came in the 1860's. The Houldsworth family had a number of spinning sites in Manchester but the business had outgrown the premises. Sir William Houldsworth bought land in Reddish in 1864 and Houldsworth Mill was started in 1865 and finished in 1867. Central Reddish was transformed by the development which included the building of Houldsworth School, Houldsworth Working Man's Club, St. Elizabeth's church and rectory (C of E), and a lot of houses for the mill workers. Houldsworth also introduced a sickness benefit scheme and a savings scheme. Houldsworth Mill stopped spinning in 1958.

William Houldsworth, the son of Henry Houldsworth and Helen Hamilton, was born in 1834. In the 1860's Houldsworth built his cotton mill on a "green-field" site here in Reddish. The mill still stands, recently restored and redeveloped as housing, college, and office accommodation. At the time of its building, this was largest cotton-spinning mill in the world. That Sir William was a social pioneer is proved by his far-sighted provision of good-quality housing in Reddish for his workers. This reflected the ideas of Robert Owen and Houldsworth's contemporary, the Yorkshireman, Sir Titus Salt.Chairman of the Fine Cotton Spinners' Association, Houldsworth was elected as Conservative MP for North West Manchester in 1883.  Sir William was a committed Christian and a noted philanthropist. He was also a gifted organist and commissioned William Hill of London to provide instruments, not only for St Elisabeth's, but also for other churches, including Manchester Cathedral.  Houldsworth, who was Britain's delegate at the European Monetary Conference in Brussels in 1892, retired from the House of Commons at the 1906 General Election. He died on 18th April 1917.

St Elisabeth's of Reddish, built between 1881 and 1883, owes its existence to Sir William Houldsworth who commissioned Alfred Waterhouse to design the Church.

Waterhouse and Houldsworth seemed to have shared a vision of what an ideal church building should be. The magnificence and exotic atmosphere of the interior was a cause of considerable concern to the Bishop of Manchester who felt it too rich and continental, and was more than a little worried about the High Church services which he rightly assumed would be held in it.

St Elisabeth's cost Sir William over pounds20,000, a fortune at the time. We can bring this amount into a contemporary perspective if we reflect that the Church has now to be insured for over seven million pounds.

Waterhouse and Houldsworth used the finest craftsman and artists. The glass in the apse is by Kemp, and the windows in the clerestory by the Manchester Pre-Raphaelite, Frederick Shields. Earp was responsible for the carving, (all of which was drawn-out by Waterhouse), and the eight bells in the tower are by Taylor of Loughborough.

Henry Houldsworth made the family fortune with his cotton mill in Glasgow, later diversifying into iron works at Coltness in Lanarkshire and Dunaskin in Ayrshire. Quite a number of the country estates in the area belonged to the family: Mount Charles and Rozelle in Ayr, Coodham near Kilmarnock, Belvidere and Cranstonhill in Glasgow, Coltness and Castlebank in Lanarkshire.  In the late 1800s the Coodham estate was sold to Sir William Houldsworth, the one-time mill-owner in Reddish, Stockport and Conservative MP for Manchester North West from 1883 to 1906.  Although he made his fortune south of the border Sir William spent his last years at Coodham where he invested heavily in improving the estate.

Sir William made his own mark on the house, adding a private chapel in 1878, creating the lake and populating the gardens with a variety of rare plants, including spruce pine, 30 species of bamboo and other plants from the Black Forest and California. I am sure the lake would have been of interest to Sandie as the lake, which is a mile in circumference and is stocked with an assortment of fish, was often used for skating and as a curling rink for important competitions in winters gone by.

Sir William Houldsworth Bart. (1834-1917), cotton manufacturer. Born in Manchester the fourth son of cotton spinner Henry Houldsworth. He was educated at St. Andrew's university and joined the family firm as a partner. In 1865 the firm relocated from central Manchester to Reddish, to the purpose-built Houldsworth mill, at that time a model of architecture and employment practices. Integral to the relocation plan was the building of a factory community which included a school, recreation ground, a working man's club and a church, (the latter two both designed by Alfred Waterhouse). He stood unsuccessfully for parliament in 1880, but was elected as a Conservative three years later. Houldsworth's efforts in the Tory cause were rewarded by Lord Salisbury with a baronetcy in 1887. As an MP he was a supporter of the Manchester Ship Canal, free trade (until 1903 when he came out in favour of Tariff Reform), bimetallism and the amalgamation of the cotton industry. He was also actively involved in many public institutions in Manchester, including Owen's College and many working men's clubs. Freedom of the city of Manchester was conferred on him in 1905. He retired to Scotland in 1906 where he died in April 1917.(1) His contributions to Reddish include St. Elizabeth’s Church and the surrounding complex, Houldsworth Mill and its associated terraces of workers houses, built as a planned industrial estate in 1870s.

William was of Reddish, Lancashire, England and was of Coodham, Ayrshire, Scotland.  D.L. Ayreshire, Scotland.

William married Elizabeth Graham CRUM, daughter of Walter CRUM and Unknown, on 20 Aug 1862. Elizabeth Graham CRUM died on 11 Dec 1923.

Sir William Henry Houldsworth, was also an MP representing North West Manchester and much of the Houldsworth area of Reddish is a great legacy to the distinguished man who was a well known businessman with golf as his major hobby.

Houldsworth, Sir William Henry (1834-1917)
Son of Henry Houldsworth, head of important Manchester Cotton Spinning firm. Born in Ardwick in 1834, into a prosperous Nottinghamshire landed family. Educated at St Andrews University. Active in Manchester commercial circles, including member of Board of Manchester Chamber of Commerce. Conservative M.P., 1883-1906.

Houldsworth's great uncle had settled in Manchester towards the end of the eighteenth century and established a fine cotton spinning business, Thomas Houldsworth's and Co. This firm was extended by his nephew Henry Houldsworth, father of William Henry, who in 1864 relocated the manufacturing business to a model estate at Reddish near Stockport. Houldsworth joined the firm from university and was credited with various significant mechanical improvements in its operations. In 1868, on the death of his father, he became head of the firm.

William was an Anglican, and a member of the Church of England Temperance Society, of the Manchester and Salford Church Schools Defence Association, and also an active supporter of the Manchester Young Men's Christian Association.

An active public figure, Governor of Owens College, and of the Manchester Grammar School, also Governor and joint treasurer of the Manchester and Salford Reformatory, and chairman of the directors of the Gentlemen's Concert Hall.

Houldsworth was also very active in Manchester politics. He was President of the Manchester Conservative Association. From 1883-1885 he was one of the M.P.s for the united Manchester constituency, and then from 1885 to 1906 he was M.P. for North-West Manchester, the seat with the largest proportion of business voters. His conservatism was mild, and he was perhaps best described as a Palmerstonian Liberal who had gravitated to the Conservatives because of his lack of sympathy with radical politics.

He was knighted in 1887, and awarded the freedom of the city of Manchester in 1905.

Elisabeth Graham CRUM

In the marriage contract trust made between William Henry Houldsworth and Elizabeth Graham Crum in
August 1862, it was stated that:

"And this indenture further witnesseth, that in consideration of the said intended marriage, the said Elizabeth Graham Crum with the consent of her said intended husband, assigns, disposes, conveys and makes over from her and her heirs and successors to and in favour of the said trustees, the estate real and personal now belonging and pertaining to her, or which she may acquire or succeed to during the marriage, or
whatever belongs to her at the time of her death, to be held by them in trust."

This marriage contract ensured that all property she owned as a single woman, and all property that she might acquire during her marriage, would remain her own property, and would be held in trust for her. It also ensured that any income and interest resulting from this separate property belonged to the wife, and the wife alone, whilst any decision to sell or give away such property rested upon her sole judgement:

"And to pay the annual income of the said trust fund to the said Elizabeth Graham Crum during her life, for her separate use free from the control of the said William Henry Houldsworth, or any future husband, as a strictly personal provision, and for which her receipts alone shall be sufficient discharges to the said trustees."

The contract also stated that "no investment shall be made during the life of the said Elizabeth Graham Crum, without her previous consent in writing".
