Page: 217Joseph Oswald, son of Joseph Skidmore, came from a successful business family, builders & bankers of repute, who offered him good opportunities for betterment. Joseph however seems to be a bit more of a free spirit and not so quite a chip off the old block.
Joseph was born in 1871 in Manchester but the later 1871 census found him with the family at Church Road, Lytham. His father was still a builder and his mother, Maria was then 29 with Maud Constance and Joseph.
By 1881 Joseph Skidmore still described himself as a Master Builder but they had moved to Conway; The Sycamores, Pwllcrochan Road, Llandrillo-Yn-Rhos, Denbigh. The family had now grown, Maude Constance b1870 , Joseph Oswald b1871 Sidney B b1873 Edwin B b1874 Mable b1876 , Harry S b1878 & Charlotte b1881 plus the governess Louisa Slibbard.By 1891 Joseph Oswald was on his own with servants at, Acton Bridge, apparently farming so it looks like Joseph was not necessarily thinking of a career in building. At some unknown point before 1911 father Joseph Skidmore had come to reside at The Cliffe in Acton Bridge so there are now two Joseph Neills in the same place!
On the 15th of February 1896 Joseph Oswald married by licence Ada Chris Sara Hodgson a girl from Dunham Massey Cheshire who was born in Bootle, Liverpool in 1869. Joseph was apparently describing himself as a Gentleman on the licence.
In 1898 a London Contracting partnership between James Oswald Neill and William Henry Booth engineers and contractors of Pear Tree road London was dissolved. It appeared James Oswald had abandoned his foray into building and was now looking for a new investment in Acton Bridge.Sidney, Josephs brother, was also manufacturing in Acton Bridge and in 1899 he was producing Kontello a product for washing woollens with miraculous qualities! In 1900 Joseph Oswald formed a business with Edward Hindley manufacturing chemicals called The Weaver Refining Co., Manure manufacturers and General dealers in animal products at Acton Bridge Whitton brook and St Helens. They seemed to be buying general butchers waste for refining especially fat and if bones came their way - it was fertilizer. There seems to be some turn of rather complex events here where Edward and Joseph also became in 1908 the American Cattle Company. It seemed to have been a good move as they had spent 8 years making shrewd acquisitions, but Joseph ended up as did Edward in a large company that all seemed to be to do with getting whatever was useful off a dead animals and making money from it. They both ended up with 6000 shares each.
In the 1901 census Joseph Oswald was at Willow Green, a splendid house Joseph had built at Little Leigh and still described as a 'Contractor & Barge Owner' was with Ada Chris and 3 children Annette V b1897, Harold S b1899 & Sidney M b1901.
In 1911 Joseph was confirmed as a Chemical Manufacturer at Willow Green with Ada Chris but without children.
Ada Chris died in 1919 and Joseph remarried to Florence M Evans in Conway Wales in 1923.The Times of London reported that Joseph Oswald Neill died in Llandudno on November 19th 1934.
