* my sister Betty Threapland, Widow
* my neice Mary Mawdsley
* my grandson Joseph Baxendell WalkerNotes on the Will of Joseph Baxendell 1797-1869
There are a couple of notable omissions from this will. Firstly, there is no mention of Joseph's nephew Edward Baxendell, although his brothers Thomas, Joseph. James, Robert and sisters Ann and Mary are all mentioned and provided for. Edward had been in London since about 1850 and in 1862 emigrated with his family to Australia. Edward died in 1865.The second point of note is that there is no mention anywhere of Joseph's children by his first marriage to Jane Rowbottom. Both the children of Joseph Baxendale and Jane Rowbottom, John and Jane, died as infants.
Joseph also mentions a neice Mary Mawdsley who is remembered in the Will "as an acknowledgement for the great care and kind attention bestowed on my late wife and myself during our recent sickness...." She appears in the 1841 Census of Denton living with Joseph aged between 25 -30. She is Hannah's neice the daughter of Hannah's brother Samuel as Mary Cooke and she married John Mawdsley in 1839.

In addition there is no mention of a John in his father's will - the most likely explanation is that he is deceased.

Charles acted as the cotton manufacturer in Preston, while Anthony was merchant, broker and agent for the cotton in Liverpool"
The above is confirmed by a Deed of Partnership #DDH754 dated 18th January 1811, held in the Lancashire Record Office, Preston.Five years later Joseph became a partner in the firm of Thomas Pickford and Co

bankruptcy. The Pickfords family saves the company but sacrifices their connection
with it by selling out to new owners - Joseph Baxendale, Charles Inman and Zachary

company. His family will remain active in the company for almost 120 years.1817 Joseph Baxendale, Zachary Langton, Charles Inman and Hugh Hornby Burley

Subsequently, he joins the board of several railway companies and holds shares in
docks, harbours and other ventures that would help further the fortunes of Pickfords.
The company's wagons ran on most of the new railways lines as soon as they opened,
starting a long argument with most railway owners who felt that all railway rolling stock
should be theirs and not the carriers.
