4. Henry FOGG

Note there is a baptism at Bolton-le-Moors of Mary daughter of Henry and Mary Fogg of Haulgh on 10 June 1711 (born 8 Jun 1711).  This could be from an earlier marriage and Mary died in or about 1712 or it could be a different Henry.  A Henry Fogg and Mary Crompton married 2 Apr 1711 St Peter, Bolton.  A Henry died 1714.  This is possibly the father of this Henry.  So the father Henry may have married twice firstly to Elizabeth Horrocks who died in 1701 and then secondly to Mary Crompton.  Henry Senior, the father, then died in 1714.

The question now is did Henry Snr, father then remarry after death of wife in 1701 and hopefully to Mary Crompton in 1711. She was already well along the line  with her pregnancy and this may have prompted the marriage.   As this marriage produced only one child she was young enough so is there an age difference of quite a bit here? The conclusion is that as there is no death of Mary Fogg or a child Fogg it could be as simple as Henry, senior, died in 1714 and Mary and child continued.

Both Henry junior and Henry senior were possibly weavers of Haulgh and that adds to the confusion.

The following Fogg children are the product of this Henry Fogg and Margaret.

8. Ann FOGG

Surname Fogg is found in several different forms however here it is usually Fogg.  The immediate reaction to this surname is that it is derived from the meaning of Fog as in weather however not apparently so. Of course there are differences in the interpretation but the standard is that Fogg was from the old Norse and then Middle English for the grass that was left to grow after the hay had been cut and could embrace also someone who lived by such a meadow or grazed their cattle on it in the winter so an agricultural derivation. It is a toss up as to its origins Lancashire or Kent?

Fogg at one point were one of the big 4 landowners of Bolton.

The following baptism seems reasonable as Ann calls her first child Margaret.
