John born 1649 would not have known his father, John born 1621, but his mother ensured he got a good education and he probably attended Burnley Grammar school which was founded 1559.  He was apparently excellent/fluent in Latin and Greek although this would not be much use at Foulds House but his mother had a university education in mind.  John's life didn't go that way and he got very disillusioned with the established Church and went off on a tour round the country accompanied by a blind companion.  Somewhere along the way he became a Quaker as did many in the Ecroyd ranks that followed him.  His education was not wasted as he ran a Quaker boarding school from Foulds House and the house was also used for meetings of the like minded form early on in the history of Quakerism c1662.  He is said it have been also doing nicely out of weaving cloth.  Although no doubt at the time this property may well have been isolated it was risky holding such meetings.  Those that knew their neighbours well were sometime informers on their neighbours  and friends who ended up being arrested and worse. In fact John must not have made secret his religion. In total he had several spells in prison totalling at least 8 years for his beliefs and he was in Lancaster Gaol in 1684.

John it is said inherited Foulds House from his father who died 1649 in the woods and he married Alice Pollard the daughter of George and Grace Pollard nee Cheetham in the house of Stephen Sager 2nd Jan 1678/9 in nearby Nelson.  Alice was already a Quaker at the marriage and was ridiculed by her parents.  However George at least came round.  He was buried in the orchard.  John died 12th Jan 1721/2.
