Dr John Ecroyd was son of a John Ecroyd, the first of his family to join the Society of Friends, otherwise known as the Quakers. The other son, Richard, who lived at Lane House, Briercliffe, for a time, was responsible for running the family woollen business at Edge End in what was then Little Marsden (now Brierfield). Some of the cottages associated with this business have survived, as has, from a later period, the great mill at Lomeshaye in what was then Great Marsden (now Nelson).

The Ecroyds had come to Briercliffe in the 16th Century from the Hebden Bridge area when they bought the small Foulds Estate. As with many small farmers, they became involved in the woollen industry which they ran, initially, from Foulds House. The present property, replacing an ancient timber dwelling, was built by the family on a substantial scale, at the end of the 16th Century, so they must have become successful in their commercial activities fairly quickly.

As the elder son, Dr John Ecroyd inherited Foulds House, and the land attached to it, but neither he nor his children could be described as farmers. John, his eldest son, became an apothecary in Kendal; Richard, the second son, was trained as a doctor and emigrated to the West Indies, and Stephen, the youngest, inherited Foulds House and could be described as a “gentleman farmer”. The portraitist Sir Godfrey Kneller (1643-1723) painted a likeness of Dr John.

Many trees have her death as 15 Nov 1751 but this is for a Martha the daughter of Richard and Susanna Ecroyd.  Clearly not correct.

What links Tipping and Ecroyd is the fact they are Quakers, they live not too far apart from each other and they seem to keep inter marrying.
The pattern seems to be that the Quaker families intermarried to keep whatever they had in the family. When you look at the marriages of Ecroyd there are marriages not only between Tipping but between Ecroyd cousins and the same surnames seem to crop up.  It was not the accepted thing to marry out to a non Quaker as Quaker the society would not accept it and often cast out those who did.

Richard was born in 1730 and died on or about 12th Aug 1765 in Calcutta India with a will in the National Archives.  It is possible that something went wrong with this man and the family.  He was also a medical man and receives little attention in the family pedigree apart from being born and said to have gone to West Indies.  He looks like he is in the employ of the East India Company as a Surgeon and lived in Calcutta India at least at his death.  He had two illegitimate children with what may well be both native women.  They appear to be two illegitimate children one of each sex.  Maria named her child Richard after the father and his surname was Ecroyd.  His father made provision for him in his will though he seemed to be rather unsure if Maria was having a baby or not. He left Pounds 1000 for the expected child and appointed as Guardian one Richard Bradwell one of the richest men in Calcutta and well known for his sexual exploits! Richard Ecroyd's son was born posthumously in 1766 an illegitimate, was educated in England but returned to Calcutta.  He had a desire to contact his English relatives  but didn't do it whilst receiving his English education.  He did it after a chance meeting in Bengal.  It seems evident that his family was not to keen on encouraging his contact and it is unknown why. He started writing to his Aunt Deborah wife of Stephen Ecroyd stating that he wanted a wife from Cumbria putting forward his best attributes and stating that he couldn't visit at the moment as he had invested in an indigo manufactuary. He says his mother was French descended and from the Conte de Flandres. Richard left an estate of Pounds 57 died May 1797.

Ann Whalley married a Thomas Tipping in June 1726. Thomas was of Sawley later linked to Sawley Grange. There was a child Frances born 15th May 1734 of Sawley who died 13th Aug 1784. Frances married her cousin Richard Ecroyd 22nd October 1757 at Crawshaw Booth in Rossendale.
