After his marriage Richard Junior did not have an easy time of it. The Bull in was a huge place and much bigger than the Eagle and Child in Bury. It was doing the same things though, dinner's entertainment, sales, meetings, events, masons meetings, running coaches, handling a booking office for journeys, serving food and drink, providing accommodation etc. No doubt it was a pretty noisy and rowdy place especially on a Saturday night so it seems. The Inn had a large staff and in 1861, on the night of the census, Ellen Oram is not at home in Bury but is at The Bull Inn and Ellen is described as niece so they have been keeping in touch. In 1861 there is no sign of Richards's wife or of any children and this indicates a quite sad state of affairs.
It is written that Burnley acknowledged its move from pre industrial agricultural to industrial when Richard Rothwell [last of the stagecoach drivers] sold up his wagons, most of his horses, carriages etc in 1852? No doubt business had been killed off by the railways however on the staff in 1861 there is still an ostler. This reference should be to Richard Rothwell here as he is in part of a piece where the Bull in is mentioned. However Richard must have carried on at the Black Bull without the coaching side. The Black Bull was demolished in the 1930s to make way for shops.

George died aged 54 living in Poulton Le Fylde. There is a whole raft of Slater buried in Burnley cemetery and they seem to have family vaults he was buried in one of them on 28th Oct 1891.

Source: LDS Film 1517795Their mother Ann had died aged 34 and was buried St Peter Burnley 28th April 1855. Richard could most likely could not deal with young children after the death of his wife together with a busy inn and so Kate and Jane went probably aged 5 and 7 to live elsewhere. It is possible that all four children went to live with their maternal grandma Jane Wilson in Fulledge Street and Jane and Kate don't show up on the 1861 census as they died before it was taken. Jane Rothwell (nee Richardson) has remarried somewhere along the line after 1842 although she is described as a retired inn keeper.

Source: LDS Film 559157Joseph seems to have become a publican as he was at the Stanley Arms, Stanley Street Bury in 1870 when there is a report in the Bury Times of the theft of a cash box containing Pounds 80 from one of the bedrooms in the pub. Joseph could also have been at some point at the Duke of Wellington Heywood as there was a publican named Joseph Metcalf at that establishment. He has children Frank in 1869, James 1867 died 14th Feb 1869 aged 2 years 4 months buried with parents, Annie 1874 all born at the pub in Stanley street and Emily was born in 1866 but she died after 6 weeks on 12th March 1866 and is buried with grandparents James and Nancy Metcalfe.
By 1871 Joseph had living with him wife, Ellen Nuttall his niece, who was a servant aged 17 and Frank aged 2. Joseph rose to be the president of the licensed victuallers association.
In 1881 Joseph was still a publican but he was now living at Clough Street and he was at The Waggon and Horses with son Frank 12, Ann 7 his daughter and sister in law Sarah Meadowcroft aged 41 and his niece Sarah Ann Meadow croft aged 20 and by 1888 he was retired.
In 1891 he was living at Gig lane bury with Frank who was articled to a solicitor and Annie/Ann His daughter who was buried 5th April 1893 aged 20 with parents. It looks like Frank qualified as a solicitor and lived at Cinder Hill Walmersley with his father and was probably of Woodcocks Solicitors Bury. Sarah Meadowcroft is also buried in the family grave she died 6th Feb 1897 aged 63,
