Silvanus Mottram Milner was born on 21 January 1901 at Salford, the son of Edmund T Milner, honorary consultant surgeon at Salford Royal Hospital, and his wife, Emma, nee Chandley. During his early childhood his father suffered a stroke, relinquished his hospital appointment and moved with his family to the Isle of Man.
He was educated at King William's College in the Isle of Man and at Rugby School before studying medicine at King's College, Cambridge, and Manchester Medical School. He qualified in 1924 and came under the influence of Sir Harry Platt who inspired an interest in orthopaedic surgery during his early postgraduate years. He passed the Fellowship three years after qualifying and, after junior appointments at Salford Royal Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Great Portland Street, was elected to the honorary staff as orthopaedic surgeon to Bolton Infirmary, Hope Hospital, Patricroft Hospital, Eccles and Marple Children's Hospital. In addition to a heavy workload he conducted a rehabilitation service for the National Union of Mineworkers and participated in meetings of the surgical section of the Manchester Medical Society of which he became President.
He retired in 1964 and moved to Harbledown, near Canterbury, where he was able to pursue his interests of bee-keeping, gardening and silverwork. He married Barbara Wood Walker. He died on 19 April 1984, aged 83.

Dr Guy Chandler Milner was a 3rd generation doctor, his grandfather Ralph Milner(1818 - 82) was a surgeon who practised on Oldfield Lane, Salford and was known as the "2nd Oldfield Lane Doctor" - the 1st being Dr. E. Taylor after whom Ralph named his son Edmund Taylor Milner, who also studied medicine and became the 3rd Oldfield Lane Doctor. During WWII Dr Guy Milner (1902 - 87) served on the destroyer HMS Venomous in 1942 prior to becoming a specialist in dental work and Hon. Surgeon at Addenbrooke Hospital and also at Royal Dental Hospital. He was also an instructor in dental anaesthetics. In 1956 Dr Milner published "Some of the answers" which consisted of his answers to patients who had consulted him.
Guy was educated in the I O M at King Williams College Castletown where he lived with parents and brothers Silvanus and Edmund Ralph.
Guy attended Rugby School for his next phase of education and was there between 1915 and 1920. Guy attended Kings College Cambridge, and graduated as M A in 1928. He attended Cambridge and London hospital medical college, MB 1937 was Bch in 1928 MRCS. Guy was a G P in Petts Wood, Kent and was in charge of Petts Wood first aid post during 1943 to 1945. Guy was a Red Cross lecturer and examiner and also medical officer to several insurance companies.
In 1946 he stood as parliamentary candidate for Petts Wood as an Independent. He retired from NHS and General practice 1957.
