6. Thomas POLHILL

Thomas Polhill, of Preston, Esq. called " John " in the Visitation of 1619. He took to wife Margaret, daughter of Thomas Chapman, Esq. of Totesham Hall in Farley, co. Kent, one of the Grooms of the Chamber to King Henry the Eighth.

The Topographer and Genealoist Vol 1 of 1846 has a John (of Preston - the Elder of Chancery Suit 1582) as the son of Thomas and that Thomas Polhill as of Preston, Esq. called " John " in the Visitation of 1619, but no records to confirm this have been identified.

7. John POLHILL

Extract from the Post Mortem on John Polhill 1588
JOHN POLHILL being seised in form aforesaid of the premises died so seised thereof on the 20th day of June in the thirtieth year of Elizabeth the Queen AND that the aforesaid JOHN POLHILL is his nearer son and heir and on the day of the taking of this inquisition is of the age of 31 years and FURTHER the aforesaid jurors say upon their oaths that the aforesaid manor of BUCKLAN appurtenances is held and on the day of the death of the aforesaid John Polhill named in the said writ was held of Ralph Weldon esquire as of his manor of Swanscombe by the half-part of one knight's fee and a rent of nine shillings a year for the ward of the aforesaid castle on the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle (every) year and is worth by the year in all its issues beyond reprises four pounds.

8. Thomas POLHILL

Thomas Polhill, the second son of Thomas and Joan Miller, of Wrotham, left issue a son and heir:
Thomas Polley, alias Polhill, of Wrotham, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Daniel, of Farningham, Esq. and by her had one son and two daughters; Elizabeth, the elder daughter, married Thomas Cooke, Esq. a younger branch of the Cookes of Wickham, co. Sussex; Dorothy, the younger, married Thomas Birchenstey, Esq. second son of Thomas Birchenstey, alias Birstey, Esq. of Birchenstey, co. Sussex. Sir Thomas Polley or Polhill, of Wrotham, Knt. his only son and heir living 1619, married Elizabeth, daughter of George Byng, Esq. of Wrotham, co. Kent, ancestor of the Viscounts Torrington, Baron Strafford, and the Byngs of Middlesex (v. Hasted), and by her had issue three sons and three daughters, Jane, Martha, and Elizabeths the last of whom died 20 July 1686, and was buried at Shoreham. George Polhill, the eldest son, died 19 Oct. 1678, setat 66; and his wife, whose name is not given in the pedigree, died on the 30th Aug. 1682, and was buried at Shoreham, and it is presumed s. p. Thomas, second son, ob. s. p. 9th Feb. 1667, astal. 54, and was buried at Shoreham. William P. died an infant, A.D. 1619.

Mentioned as the late deceased Thomas Polhill the elder of Shoreham in son Thomas' will of 1602.

The will of Thomas Polley als Polhill dated 21st Dec. 1528 requests that he be 'buried in our lady chapel in the church of Shoreham whereas my mother was buried'. This Thomas was the younger son of John Polley and Alice Buckland who founded the Kentish line of the Polhill family and inherited the estates of Thomas Buckland. He was father to the Thomas who died in 1588 and was responsible for the payments for glazing, and whose memorial is in the brass inserted in the chancel step. Many other members of the Polhill family lie buried beneath the chauncel floor, as is indicated by the memorial slabs beneath the choir pews.

The Borretts were connected by marriage with the Polhill.

10. Robert POLHILL

Robert Polhill, the fourth son of Thomas Polhill and Joan Miller, is stated in the Visitation to have left a son William, and several other children, of whom no further account is given.

11. William POLHILL

William, the fifth son of Thomas and Joan Miller, left a son Richard Polhill, of Philpots, in Tunbridge, Esq.; he married Sindonia, daughter and heir of William Childrens, Esq. of Philpots, co. Kent, by a daughter and heir of Mr. Millersh, descended through the Petleys ofTrowmerand Downe Court, by the heiress of Philpots, of Philpots in Tunbridge, (Hasted, 8vo. vol. ii. p. 55, & vol. v. p. 224.) and had issue by her one son, William Polhill, gentleman, who married Elizabeth, daughter of William Codde, of Wateringbury, co. Kent, Esq. and was father to William Polhill, who was aged 16 years in 1621, and married Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Marsh, of Langdon, gentleman, and widow of Paul Lukyn, Esq.; her will bears date A.D. 1670; from this William Polhill descended the Polhills of Philpots and Chatham, for a further account of whom, v. Hasted. The tradition in this branch of the family was, that one of them had been Bow-bender to Queen Elizabeth, and there was long preserved (says Hasted) at Philpots a bow beautifully ornamented, said to have been given to the family by that Queen.
