Letter from William Polhill, Burwash 6 July 1739
Addn 32692 Vol. VII fo. 112
to His Grace the Duke of Newcasle
Lincolns Inn Fields
Westminster
May it please your Grace
Having the honour and happiness of your Grace's promise to assist in obteyning a Riding officer's place for my brother John Polhill and being informed by Mr. Collier that there was a vacancy at Deal by one of the officers stationed at that port being superannuated (though he charged me not to mention to any person that he informed me of it). I sent my brother forthwith to Deal who was there told it was so. Whereupon he went to Mr. Turner at Maidstone and had his letter to Mr. Carkess, secretary of the Customs which he immediately carried to London and delivered the next morning but to his mortification Mr. Carkess told him and sent for answer to Mr. Turner that the vacancy had sometime been filled up for one Danby Hunter to whom the Commr. had given leave to be absent from duty but was now forthwith going. Mr. Turner thinks my brother has not fair play and advised him to come to me to write to your Grace on the subject mater, (sic).
This being a true state of the case I humbly presume to lay the same before your Grace and humbly hope for your forgiveness and that you will order an enquiry to be made into the affair by which means I hope it may be set to rights and my brother succeed. But if it should happen to be irredeemable I shall humbly hope for a continuance of your Grace's kindness to him till the same is obteyned.
I am with all respect and gratitude, My Lord, your Grace's most faithful obedient servant
Will. Polhill

John Polhill (b. 1698) John was the son of Edward Polhill of Burwash and Mary Gillam. The coveted post referred to is that of Riding Officer, sought for John by his brother William in a letter dated 6th July 1739 to the Duke of Newcastle.

Some consider that this John died in infancy but there is no record in the Burwash baptismal register of another John being born to Edward and Mary Polhill, nor any record of the death of John in infancy. And the William Polhill who wrote to the Duke of Newcastle did so from Burwash, so he must have been the William who was brother of John.

One further piece of evidence is that John's uncle Nathaniel Polhill mentioned by name, including John, in the children of Edward Polhill and Mary Gillham.
