LINEAGE —The Polhill, or Polley family, is one of the most ancient in the counties of Kent and Sussex, having had possessions in the latter shire since the reign of Queen Elizabeth, and in the former, time immemorial. In Kent, the Polleys gave their name to Detling, which, Hasted says, was anciently called Polley-street, part of which is still, or lately was, the property of the Otford branch. From this place the family originated or gave to it their name. Here they for ages flourished, and were written Polhill alias Policy, and there are yet lands in the parish called Polley-fields. From the time of Queen Elizabeth, the senior branch principally resided at Frenches, in Burwash, co. Sussex, where the majority of them are buried. The following are, or were, the chief branches;—The Polhills of Preston, co. Kent, and of Frenches, in Burwash, co. Sussex; the Polhills of Chatham; the Polhills of Otford, Detling, and Chipstead, co. Kent; the Polhills, or Polleys, of Wrotham, co. Kent who intermarried with the Byngs of the same place, ancestors of the Viscounts Torrington; the Polhills of Philipots, in Tonbridge, and of Tonbridge Priory, co. Kent; and tho Polhills of Shoreham Castle, in the same county.
