2. Thomas WHITTON

In the parish records of Bedale there would appear to be a few Whitton families around in the 1580s with a number of births and burials of families of Thomas and John.

The marriage in 1574 would suggest Thomas was born about 1550.

This Thomas is from Great Crakehall.  His second, third and fourth child are recorded as being from Great Crakehall.  Only as a reasonable possibility - Thomas could have been the son of a John Whitton who was recored as from Great Crakehall and died in 1578. A widow Margaret Whitton died in Great Crakehall in 1580, possibly Thomas' mother.

There are also marriage records for a Thomas Whitton marrying on 20 May 1588 in Patrick Brompton. This could be the same marriage as for another record on 5 May 1588 indicating that Thomas came from Patrick Brompton parish and wife Margaret Hearison probably came from the Bedale parish.  This could be the second marriage of the above Thomas or more likely the marriage of another Thomas who was from the Bromption area.  See below for the details of this second family.

Thomas held a significant land tenure in the Crakehall area as identified in the Transcript of the Crakehall section of a Survey of the Lordship of Middleham, of about 1602.

One acre of arable land in Scroggefield,
Grazing in Oxepasture for two beasts,
Grazing in Scroggs and Guilfield for four beasts.
Annual value 57s 4d.

There are three burials of a Thomas Whitton in Bedale that are recorded; 17 Feb 1586 of East Brompton, 2 Oct 1625 of Magna Crakeall and 2 Apr 1629 of Brompton.  Either of the latter two are possible.  This also indicates the two above marriages were to two different Thomas - one from Great Crakehall and one from East Brompton.

This first Thomas burial is likely to be at Bedale 2 Oct 1625 of Magna Crakeall

The wife death records also indicate the potential for two different Thomas.  The Thomas death of 2 Oct 1625 of magna Crakehall could have been the husband of Margaret Warde and her death could have been the Margaret Whitton buried 14 April 1616, wife of Thomas Whitton of Great Crakehall.

The second Thomas was likely to be buried 2 April 1629 at Brompton and his wife Margaret Whitton (Hearison?) buried 8 Feb 1609, wife of Thomas Whitton of East Brompton.  It is possible his father was also a Thomas who was buried on 17 Feb 1586 in East Brompton.
