John was a carpenter and in 1732 a Miss Mary Turner, a member of the Turner family of Kirkleatham in Cleveland purchased the Hall of Crakehall. Miss Turner then bought up the remaining cottages on the Hall side of the green, and demolished them to enlarge and improve the Hall as her own residence. She spent the next thirty years as an admired and respected Lady of the Manor of Crakehall. She reintroduced regular manor courts, for which she appointed local people to a number of traditional manorial offices. The manor court rolls of this time record its activities in great detail. Miss Turner's steward, Edward Bunting, drew up instructions for the officers, probably using the traditional forms of the manor judging from some of the archaic spelling and outdated customs. An extract that refers to John Whitton follows:

Miss Turner held courts regularly throughout her time as Lady of the Manor, until her death in 1763.

Manour of Crakehall (Instructions to bailiffe)
These are to require you to summon all the tenants of the said manour, whose names are hereunder written, and all other persons that do owe suit or service to the said Court personally to be and to appear at this Court Baron to be holden for the manour aforesaid, upon the 23rd day of October instant, at the house of John Whitton, carpenter, then and there to do and perform their several suits and services according to the customs of the said manour, and have you there the names of such persons as you have so summoned, and this precept given under my hand and seal this 23rd day of October, 1733.

John Whitton is referred to as John Whitton in the 1733 Crakehall mannor court list.

The survey of the property in Crakehall owned by Henry and Elizabeth Goddard in Crakehall in 1732 was made in preparation for the sale of the manor to Mary Turner. The document is at NYCRO (ref. ZBA 11/10/23) and is transcribed with the kind permission of Sir Henry Beresford Peirse. The survey was for the purpose of assessing the purchase price. The list from which the total rent is calculated excludes Storrar's farm (Scroggs), Whitton's farm (West Pasture) and the warp (fulling) mill. These were excluded from the sale by Goddard to Turner.
Survey entries:
[West Pasture] John Whittone   rent  pounds0 - 13 - 0
Robert Whitton   90 acres, rent pounds48 - 0 - 0, allowance pounds2 for lyme

A John Whitton was Crakehall Churchwarden of the Bedale Church from 1732 to 1733.

John's wife Elizabeth died in 1743 and was described as the wife of John Whitton, the Elder.

See Notes under John Whitton b1641 for an explanation of potential family relationships.

Robert was a Yeoman of Little Crakehall (ref Son John bap 1727)

[West Pasture] John Whittone   rent  13/ 0
Robert Whitton   90 acres, rent 48 pounds - 0 - 0, allowance 2 pounds for lyme

62. George WHITTON

According to his son William and George's baptism records, this George was a Yeoman in 1738 and 1745.  There are two George Whittons born in the Bedale area that could be this George.  One George born to Robert Whitton (and Mary Richisson - married in 1688) in 1694, and the other George born to John Whitton (and Jane Lickley - married 1710) in 1712.  It is not possible to know with certainty which one was this George.  The older one baptised in 1694 has been assumed as this George.  This George b1694 was from Little Crakehall at his baptism and marriage.  The names Mary and Robert seem to flow to the children and/or grandchildren and seems to suggest this George b1694 is the son of Robert and Mary.

Baptism: George son of Robert Whitton of Parva(Little) Crakehall 5 August 1694 - FHL 207500
George son of Robert Whitton of parba Crakehall ? August 1694 - FHL 467734
George son of Robert Whitton of parba Crakehall 5 August 1694 - FHL 1849237

It is assumed that Mary Anderson was the wife of George the father of Mary, William and George as it is the only record of George married in the Bedale area from 1706 to 1746 and the name Mary flows to the first daughter.  The marriage took place in 1734.

Marriage: George Whitton and Mary Anderson, spinster, both of Gt Crakehall, married in Bedale 20 April 1734 - FHL 1849237

His wife Mary dies as a widow in 1773 so George the husband died before 1773.

There are two potential burials that may relate

Burial Bedale: George Whitton of Bedale, Butcher 4 July 1759 - FHL 207500, 467734, 1849237

Burial Bedale: George Whitton of Bedale, Yeoman - 23 March 1771

The latter is assumed as he was a Yeoman as per his childrens baptisimal records.
