Thomas son of William Whitton of Bedale, shoemaker and Sarah his wife 6 August 1774 - FHL 1849237

In Hird's Annals of Bedale, Robert Hird wrote that when he was a boy (say 1775) William Whitton and his wife Sarah kept the Bakehouse.  They "had three sons William, John and Thomas; the latter two when young, and unthinking, before they had seen much of the world or, as I may say, even knew themselves, enlisted for soldiers and were both killed in Germany, fighting against the French revolutionists."

Note: William was a shoemaker not a baker.

109. George WHITTON

With George marrying Mary Loadman in 1768 his birth would be expected to be in the range of 1730 to 1750.  Of all the George Whitton's in the Bedale area the only one who lives to maturity appears to be that below.  His burial date in 1816 of age 71 also aligns.  Thus it is assumed that George Whitton the husband of Mary and Margaret Loadman was born in 1745.

Note below that in Hirds Annals of Bedale this George Whitton was still alive in 1814.

Baptism: George son of George Whitton of Ascough, yeoman 11 May 1745 - FHL 207500 (Bedale Church Records).

George son of George Whitton of Ascough, yeoman 11 May 1745 - FHL 1849237

Note that Aiskew, was formerly written as Ascough.  Aiskew is only half a mile from Bedale.

According to George's son, Robert's fourth marriage registration, George was a butcher.

When George and Margaret had Robert they lived at Firby near Bedale.  Robert's older brother Thomas's baptism record also has his father as a butcher.

George Whitton a butcher was married to Mary Loadman as per Hird's Annals below.

Marriage: groom's - George Whitton
bride's name: Mary Loadman
marriage date: 07 Jul 1768
marriage place: Brough Under Stainmore, Westmorland, England
indexing project (batch) number: M00313-4
system origin: England-ODM
source film number: 97354

Mary died in 1774 during the birth of their third child.  Although no record of George's marriage to Margaret can be found it is most likely that George the butcher then married Margaret Loadman in about 1775 (refer to Hird's Annals below) and then had two more sons, Robert and Thomas.

Inhabitants of Bedale 1791 - From the Universal British Directory 1791
Bedale is in the North Riding of Yorkshire, 6 miles from Northallerton, 8 miles from Richmond, and 220 miles from London; it stands upon a rivulet that runs into the Swale.  The New Inn and Black Swan are the two principal inns in the town.
George Whitton as a butcher is listed as a principal inhabitant.

In the County of York, the poll, for knights of the shire ... 1807 is listed:
Bedale, Whitton George, butcher - Freehold Aiskew.  This could be referring to this George b1745 or his son George b1771 who were both butchers.

According to Lesley Lewis' "Hird's Annals of Bedale" Volume 1, page 10, Robert Hird wrote that "Mary, wife of George Whitton, Butcher in Bedale was Godmother (to Robert Hird).  She being a neighbour and my dear Mother's country Woman, who oft filled my little hands with fruit Pye.  She died May 23rd 1774.  Her Sister Margaret, (who by a Gretna Green wedding with the said George Whitton) endeavoured to entice me to call her Godmother, but to no avail; and now at this time, December 10th 1814, they are both very frendly and oft invite me to go and see them."

The Bedale Parish Burial Register just shows; George Whitton, abode - Bedale, buried 13 September 1816, aged 71.

Mirefold was a farm about halfway from Great Crakehall and Aiskew.  According to the transcript of the entry for the Post Office, professions and trades for Great Crakehall in Bulmer's Directory of 1890 there was a Miss Jane Loadman as a farmer on Mirefold farm. Note that George married Mary Loadman and Margaret Loadman.

In the County of York, The poll, for knights of the shire ... 1807 is listed:
Langthorn, Whitton Thomas, yeoman.

In 1812 a Thomas Whitton witnessed the first marriage of Robert Whitton, possibly Thomas' brother.  Then in 1821 a Thomas Whitton witnessed the second marriage of Robert Whitton.

According to the transcript of the entry of "professions and trades" for Bedale in Baines's Directory of 1823 there was a Thomas Whitton of Firby Grange listed as a butcher.  Note Thomas' father George Whitton was a butcher.

No Thomas Whitton born around 1776 and listed as a butcher can be found in the 1841 or subsequent census in Yorkshire and it is presummed that he had died before 1841 or emigrated.
