John Whitton and Margaret Holmes appear to have had 9 children. The first one Thomas b1819 seems to have died young. Not long after the youngest William was born in 1835 the father John seem have got himself into trouble being convicted in 1840 and being transported to Tasmania.

According to the transcript of the entry of "professions and trades" for BEDALE in Pigot's Directory of 1834 and the transcript of the entry of "professions and trades" for BEDALE in White's Directory of 1840 there was a Blacksmith and Whitesmith listed as Thomas Whitton in the Market place.Marriage: Thomas Whitton of this Parish and Margaret Barnett of this Parish were married in this Church by Banns with consent of parents this sixteenth day of February in 1835 by me John J T Monson curate. This marriage was solemonized between us: Thomas Whitton, Margaret Barnett in the presence of Richard Simpson, Mary Whitton, William Barnett - Bedale Church Records FHL 207500 and 1849237.
In the transcript of the entry of "professions and trades" for Bedale in White's Directory of 1840 Thomas Whitton was listed as a blacksmith and whitesmith, as well as a blacksmith in the Commercial directory of Bedale 1855. In the Commercial Directory of 1855 Thomas Whitton is listed as a blacksmith at Hemgate.
In 1859 on his son George's Marriage Certificate Thomas is listed as a blacksmith.
