Page Number: 949George had 2 wives both called Elizabeth. The first one was Elizabeth Coates. They were married in London when George went into the coach building trade there and two of his children were born there but Elizabeth Baynes was from Wensleydale.
In 1890 Directory of Bainbridge George was the master and Elizabeth was the matron of the Aysgarth Union Workhouse. George Whitton was master of the workhouse for over 20 years from the late 1870's into the early 1900's. He was born in Thornton Rust and at first was a farm worker on the family farm but then became a coach-builder and moved to London for a time. However he moved back in the 1870's was widowed, remarried and remained as master of the workhouse well into his 70's.

George Whitton is still the Workhouse Master aged 58. He is listed as married again.

Margaret Whitton (daughter) aged 14.George had two separate families, one with his first wife and then another with his second wife Elizabeth Baynes from Bainbridge. They do not seem to have had any contact.
The oldest child from both families, a son, went into the army, the first a Sergeant-Major in the Royal Engineers in 1901. A son William from the second marriage followed in his footsteps and was an 'officer' in a workhouse in Lancashire.

An extract from a diary kept by M A Tiplady says " Mrs Whitton of the Workhouse (her husband was the Master) departed this life on the 4th November 1878 aged 53 years was long poorly and was a very patient sufferer. I believe she died in pefect peace. Left one son George and 2 daughters to fight life's battles."

In Campbellford, on 19th inst., James Whitton, Sr. aged 68 years and 5 months.
The many friends and acquaintences of Mr. Jas. Whitton, Sr. will learn with regret of that gentleman's death which took place at his home in Campbellford, on Saturday last. The deceased was a resident of Seymour for many years, but a few years ago he retired from the farm, and took up his residence in this village. Mr. Whitton was possessed of a kind heart, generally cheeful, and plesant in conversation, and moreover, was honorable in his walk through life. He reached the age of 68 years and 5 months. A wife by recent marriage, and a large family of grown up sons and daughters survive him to cherish his name in memory.
