3. Margaret MCGOVERN

Margaret McGovern arrived in Australia on 13 February 1841 with her two sisters, Alice and Catherine on board the ship, Jane Gifford.  The Jane Gifford, a 555 ton ship mastered by George Mason and with M. Charles Gorden as surgeon superintendent, left Plymouth on 2 October 1840 with general cargo, one cabin passenger, 250 bounty immigrants and 26 crew. Margaret could not read or write. She was also described as being in a very good state of bodily health, strength and probable usefulness. There is also a comment "no complaints". Attested by James Reardon and two others. (New South Wales Archives AO 2134 (film) and AO 1329).

It is likely Margaret McGovern and her sisters sailed from Cork to Plymouth on the "LEE" and boarded the "JANE GIFFORD". They were migrating under the Bounty Immigration Scheme.

Margaret was described as a nursemaid, a Roman Catholic from Tipperary and was 22 years old.  Her mother, Norah McGovern, was a widow.

Similar information on the three sisters appears on Reel 2134 List of Immigrants British Subjects sent to the Colony of NSW by Mr John Marshall of London in pursuance of an authority granted to his agent the Messrs. Walkers of Sydney by the Colonial Secretary dated 26/8/1839 and who arrived at Sydney by the ship Jane Gifford on 13 February 1841. Captain Flint. (Also on Reel 1329)

Her sisters married shortly after arriving, and Margaret seems to have made her way to Twofold Bay where she met Mr Shin (or Sheen). It seems there were already three McGovern families at Twofold Bay before Margaret arrived.  In the 1840's a Thomas McGovern, wife, and two children also arrived in Sydney and went to the Twofold Bay area. Two McGovern brothers later went to Goulburn and established a soap factory.

Marriage: NSW BDM V18461081 73B/1846 John Shin, a native of Chinese India of Twofolds Bay, aged 36 (this may be a mistake as it should be 56), bachelor, married Margaret McGovern of Sydney, Spinster, aged 27, on 30 April 1846 in the Presbyterian Sydney, Scotts Church by the Reverend John Dunmore Lang. Witnesses were J. Brady and Lindsey Nimo. (The latter being the husband of Margaret's sister, Catherine McGoveran)

Margaret married John Shin (or Sheen) in 1846 with Lindsay Nimo as a witness. Also Alice's husband, Hassen Dean, was the witness at Catherine and Lindsay Nimo's wedding. The Australian Vital Records show John Shin married Margaret McGovern. (another spelling variation). Margaret and John were married at Scots Church, Sydney by the Reverend John Dunmore Lang. Witnesses were J Brady and Lindsey Nimo who is the husband of Margaret's sister Catherine.

Margaret died at the home of her son-in-law John Moymow, Residence: 4 Little Essex Street. She was buried by J.& G. Shying & Co.

Sydney Morning Herald - Tuesday 7 August 1866
"BAPTISM OF EIGHT CHINESE BY THE DEAN OF SYDNEY.- Writing from Sofala, a correspondent mentions that, on Tuesday, the 31st ultimo, eight adult Chinese were baptised at Christ Church, Sofala, by the Very Rev. the Dean of Sydney, assisted by the Rev. G. E. C. Stiles and Kong Suin Quen, the Chinese catechist. The scene was a grand and an imposing one, not to be readily forgotten by those who witnessed it. As those portions of the baptismal service to which the responses are attached were repeated so the Chinese responded in their own vernacular tongue by K. S. Quen, whose converts they are, and who presented them for baptism. Such a scene has never been witnessed in any church in the colony, but it is more than probable that others of the kind will follow. The names of those baptised are as follows: - John Shin (a very aged person), James Quie, Thomas See, Henry Ah San, William Ah Foo, Peter Shin Yune, Willy Ah See, John N. Yen."

He is buried as John Sheen at Rookwood Cemetery, Old Catholic Mortuary 1, Section 5, row 9 grave 252 - 19 Jun 1880 aged 92.  "Husband of above - native of China."  (Note the age does not look correct).  His wife Margaret Sheen is buried with him.  She died 13 December 1875 aged 49. "Native of Tipperary, Ireland"

John Sheen died on 18th June 1880. His death certificate states that he was a gardener, aged 91 years. He was buried two days later at the Rookwood Cemetery by the undertakers, J & G Shying. William Slayford was one of the witnesses to the burial. William Slayford had married into the Shying family! Sheen was born in China and had supposedly been in the colony for 61 years, according to his son John Sheen.

Some think that John Sheen was actually John Shyling or Mak Sai Ying or Mak Sai Pang Mai Shi Ying or Mark Opong.
