Robert worked as a traveller for Wright Crossley and Co of Liverpool an established firm of 17 North John Street Liverpool. They were importers and also probably exporters. They were seed, spice and rice merchants and also millers and manufacturers. They were not a tin pot organisation by any means and were very highly regarded even employing an analytical chemist.

Robert Bradshaw was mentioned in a Baking Powder case in 1862.  He was no longer pounding the streets as a traveller as he is mentioned as a partner and presumably having proved himself entered into the business as a partner with John Crossley, Thomas Danson Edmondson and Charles Clerk.  The exact date he joined the three others isn't known and he could have been a junior partner first but Crossley Edmondson and Clerk were the big guns.  John Crossley died in 1868 and the three that remained carried on the business.  Charles Clerk died in 1878.  What date Robert stepped down isn't known but there was another ready to step up to the role.  Robert being a senior player in Wright Crossley also explains why at death his estate was so much bigger than any one else's in the family as he couldn't possibly have made that sort of money by being a traveller.

Note - Ann's surname can be found under Monk and Monks.  The father of Ann was James Monk a joiner and later described as joiner and builder at his daughter, Anne's marriage. Her mother was Elizabeth Fell and her parents' marriage was in St Mary Lancaster 10th Nov 1821. He appears under Monks.  Although the surname differs he is a joiner of "the town" Elizabeth is also of "the town". Witnesses Thomas and Mary Monks and Ruth Dinsdale.

In the 1851 census of St Albans Liverpool at 62 Scotland Road
John Bradshaw, Head, Mar, 28, a Hosier & C, born Woodplumpton Lancashire
Ann Bradshaw, Wife, Mar, 28, do., born Lancaster Lancashire
Annie E Bradshaw, Daur, 5, born Liverpool Lancashire
Alice Bradshaw, 4, born Liverpool Lancashire
Elizabeth Monks, Visitor, 21, Joiners daur, born Lancaster Lancashire.

Note no other recorded John Bradshaws have been so far found in the 1851 census born about 1823 in Woodplumpton.  Woodplumpton seems to be key in identifying John Bradshaw.

Ann, wife of John Bradshaw, had a sister Elizabeth Monks who married 28th June 1854 in St Wilfrid Halton, a school master and bachelor John Barrow who was of Barnstable (Devon). Elizabeth was of full age and her father is noted as James Monks, Joiner. This Elizabeth is likely to be the Elizabeth Monks the visitor in the 1851 census.

In the 1850's three of John and Ann's children die.  John Monk Bradshaw, aged 18 months died of measles in September 1851, James Monk Bradshaw died of small pox, aged 7 months, in December 1851 and Mary Bradshaw died, aged 3, in Nov 1856.  Just before John and Ann's child, Mary (born 1853) dies in 1856, they had her baptised.  At that baptism John's occupation was recorded as Accountant.  This may possibly mean two changes for John: firstly a change in occupation from hosier/draper to accountant(clerk); and secondly where he and Ann Monk separate.

By April 1861 John and Ann are living apart as shown by the follwing two census in 1861.

1. In 1861 Census of Kirkdale Liverpool, at 24 Kirkdale Road
Mary A Wood, Head, Unm, 37, Beer house keeper, born Liverpool Lancashire
Margaret Birk, niece, Unm, 12, Scholar, born Liverpool Lancashire
John Bradshaw, visitor, a widower, aged 39  a clerk (Stanley dock) born Woodplumpton Lancashire.

2. In the 1861 Census of Halton with Aughton at 20 Aughton is
James Monks, Head, Mar, 65, Retired Wheelwright & Joiner, born Lancaster, Lancashire
Elizabeth Monks, wife, Mar, 67, born Aughton, Lancashire
Ann Bradshaw, Daur, Mar, 37, Linen Draper, born Lancaster Lancashire
Alice Bradshaw, Grand Daur, Unm, 14, Scholar, born Liverpool Lancashire

By 1871 John has either married again or was living as married.

In the 1871 Census of Everton & Kirkdale, Liverpool at 18 Major Street
John Bradshaw, Head, aged 48, Freight Clerk, born Woodplumpton Lancashire
Mary Ann Bradshaw, wife, 47, born Liverpool,
Joshua Forber, Uncle, widower, aged 75, watch maker, born St Helens Lancashire

Is the Mary Ann Bradshaw (b1824) of the 1871 census the Mary A Wood (b1824) who John Bradshaw was living with in the 1861 census?  No relevant marriage of a John Bradshaw to a Mary Ann has yet been found.

Note: Joshua Forber(Forbes), watch maker, married Margaret Wood (spinster) on 12 Jan 1817 at St Thomas, Liverpool.  Margaret Forbes (nee Wood) daughter of late Thomas Wood of Tarleton St, Liverpool died 24 Jan 1866, aged 67. The term uncle can mean any kind of family relationship and  may even relate to the Mary Ann Bradshaw, wife, in the above census. If Mary Ann Bradshaw is in fact Mary A Wood then she could be a niece to Joshua Forber's wife, Margaret Wood.

When John's daughter, Annie Elizabeth Bradshaw, married in 1872, John's occupation was recorded as Draper.  The currency of this information would be uncertain as Annie or her mother may not have seen or heard of John since the mid 1850's when he was then a draper.

John's wife Ann (nee Monk) continues to live a separate life as the following two census results show:
In the 1871 Census of Halton with Aughton at 9 Hamlet, Anne Bradshaw is living with her father:
James Monks, Head, Widower, 75, Landowner, born Lancaster Lancashire
Anne Bradshaw, Daur, Widow, 47, Independent means, born Lancaster Lancashire

In the 1881 census of Kendal at 7 Finkle Street, Annie is living with her daughter, Annie E Robson:
William F Robson, Head, 39, Bookseller & printer born Hull Yorkshire
Annie E Robson, wife 36, born Liverpool
James N Robson, son 7, born Kendal Westmorland
William Robson, son 4, born Kendal Westmorland
Phyllis Robson, daur 2, born Kendal Westmorland
Maud E Robson, daur 7 mths, born Kendal Westmorland
Annie Bradshaw, Mother-in-law, widow, aged 58 of Independent means, born Lancaster.

Was John Bradshaw now a bigamist or did he and Ann obtain a divorce?

John married again, as in the 1881 census he is married to a younger Welsh wife, Ann Roberts and the following wedding details confirm that this is the correct John Bradshaw.

Marriage, noting that in the 1891 census, living with Ann Bradshaw, the young welsh wife of John Bradshaw, is Mary I Roberts, a niece.  In the 1901 Census West Derby, Edge Hill, Liverpool at 3 Smithdown Lane this Ann Bradshaw, is living with her sister Louisa Williams (nee Roberts).

The 1871 census mentions Hambleton Lancashire as Mary Ann's birth place.

By 1871 Richard was still in the pub with Mary Ann whose age was 40.  Richard now 55 says he was born Bentham Yorkshire and Mary Ann as born Hambleton along with Alice Bradshaw aged 17, Mary Ann 15 and Charles 14. Alice is therefore born around 1853.

By 1874 The Kings Arms was up for sale due to retirement of Richard.  The cellars were very large and extended under virtually the whole premise together with the yard. It was a three story high building with an extensive loft ripe for conversion into more accommodation/storage etc and on the upper floor there were 6 bedrooms. Stables outbuildings and brewery were out in the back.  A large wine and spirit vault with sitting room, a good bar, three parlours, kitchen, scullery, a billiard room, private  business room, sitting room, ante room and club room and not forgetting toilets and other modern conveniences.

In the 1881 census Mary Ann is called Annie M Robinson, aged 49.

Richard Robinson Snr died 10th March 1888 at his home 10 Camden Place Preston.

By 1891 Richard has died and Mary Ann aged 59 was a widow living at Windsor Villa Victoria Road Preston with Alice Bradshaw aged 31 but Alice was apparently born more like 1854 so she should be aged around 37, Mary Ann said to be 29 but ought be more like 36, Tirzah who is 23 a school governess, and Samuel Lewis 27.

Richard ROBINSON

Richard Robinson married his first wife at St John's Preston in 1844 and at this time he was a bachelor of North Road and a book keeper. His father is John Robinson a carpenter. Richards's wife was Jane Donaldson, a draper and single, aged 31, daughter of Peter Donaldson a shoe maker. Richard and Jane had at least 3 children: Richard, John and Elizabeth Jane. Jane, Richards's wife, died in 1851, aged 41 and the cause was most likely child birth related i.e. Elizabeth Jane in 1851. Jane died 6th Sep and was buried 9th Sep 1851 aged 41 St John Preston.

Marriage: 24 Jun 1844 St John, Preston, Lancashire, England
Richard Robinson - 29, Book Keeper, Bachelor, North Road

Richard now had the problem of young motherless children, trying to work and with no child care. Of course the answer was to get another wife and a younger one who would stay the course hence Mary Ann and on marriage Mary Ann is said to be aged 21, so the 16 or so years of an age gap fitted the bill. By the time of the marriage on 5th Oct 1852 Richard aged 37 was no longer a book keeper but a porter merchant of Frenchwood Street Frenchwood Preston and a widower. Mary Ann was of East view Preston and her father was John Bradshaw, Gent, and seemingly no longer a farmer.  In the 1851 census there was a John Bradshaw retired farmer of 28 East view so Mary Ann was still living with parents on marriage.

There is some helpful information regarding Richard Robinson in a book of 1870 that is a collection of portraits of the lives of Preston Town Council members starting in 1835 ending 1870. The following is a mix of some of that information together with other references to him.

John Robinson father of Richard Robinson was brought up in good average circumstances in Westmorland [now Cumbria] and was a carpenter by trade but was living in 1870 in Preston. He may well have been engaging in farming in order to supplement the family's income. It is said that Richard was born in 1815 and it is stated on a census his birthplace was Bentham in Yorkshire and that he was until aged 20 a farmer.  So he was not in Preston as such until about 1835 when he left farming and sought other employment becoming a sawyer in the employ of a Mr Aughton where he worked hard starting in the bottom of the saw pit and ending up as a top sawyer. In 1844 by the time of his first marriage he was then a book keeper. At some point he entered the service of James Robinson of Church Street Preston who was a wine and spirit merchant where he stayed for 4 years and learnt the trade and moved on to open his own wine and spirit merchants business on Avenham Street Preston where he still was trading in 1870.  James and Richard may be related. Joseph was born 29th June 1807 in Barnoldswick near Skipton where his father James was a carrier in the local area and James spent time as a weaver and left for Preston where he worked with his uncle Launcelot Lawrenson at the Holy Lamb Inn on Church Street apparently situated next to the house of correction i.e. the jail. After approx 6 years or about by 1832 when Launcelot ceased to be Landlord, Joseph left to work at another pub, the Kings Arms Church Street, with Samuel Ainsworth where he was a traveller and book keeper but returned to his uncle.  They set up as wine and spirit merchants with Joseph taking eventually taking sole control.  Joseph married a Yorkshire lady and had 10 children and was a councillor in Preston. Of course there are similarities between the respective paths through the life of both Richard and James and this may well be where the connection ends.

Between 1843 and 1848 due to domestic issues a new barracks was built in Fullwood Preston and at the time it was of the best design and it was later extended in the 1850s to accommodate soldiers with families. Richard from the outset was supplying the barracks with wines and spirits. Richard in 1867 organised a huge dinner with entertainment at The Kings Arms for presumably "selected" soldiers from the barracks and their wives. It is unclear if the whole event was at the expense of Richard but he certainly met the bill for the carriages that picked up and returned the guests to and from the barracks.

Richard was said to be homely, blunt and go ahead, being full of northern blood with a good voice and dashing temper having to fight in life but with much endurance and force. His head was described as of a Chinese type. Also he was said to be self reliant and wouldn't be driven or led off track. Despite being a councillor he never spoke at council meetings where he was councillor for St Johns Ward in about 1868. Richard was a free mason and a Baptist.

Apart from being in the wine and spirit trade Richard was also owner and landlord of the Old Kings Arms in Church Street Preston. This was a large old coaching Inn in the centre of town and probably at this time suffering from the effects of the coming of the railway but still commercially viable despite it being one of four pubs that were physically adjacent to each other.  Preston had it seems more than its fair share of drinking places.  Richard was there from around 1854 onwards it may well be that he bought these premises to take his new wife Mary Ann to.  Where they lived after marriage is not known but she may well have not wished to live at Frenchwood presumably the residence of Richard first wife.

Richard Robinson Snr died 10th March 1888 at his home 10 Camden Place Preston.  His funeral was to take place on the 14th. It appears that that his fellow masonic brothers have placed a notice of his passing in the Manchester Courier and they have permission for masonic dress/regalia to be worn/displayed at his funeral.  He is described as P.M  PPG  and  J P.

Richards's sole executor of his will was his wife Mary Ann and he left an estate of 1,500 pounds.
