James George Slessor was born 27th July 1879 in Methlick, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. James like his two brothers Robert and Thomas who were Doctors/Surgeons inherited a healthy intellect. James was an MA in 1900 from Aberdeen University. His write up in the Aberdeen Review says he was formerly of Aberdeen and North Berwick.
He died in hospital 25th July 1966 putting him in his 88th year. He had been living at Dane Cottage, Six Hills Stevenage Herts.
He was admitted to The Society of Accountants in 1906 and can be found in the early years of 1900 at 62 Bon Accord Street Aberdeen. It appears that after he was admitted he headed south of the border and the arrows are pointing to Sheffield Yorkshire, as a son Robert Arthur was born there 3rd May 1908 following his marriage in 1907.

Spouse: James George SlessorJames George may well be the one who served in the Gordon Highlanders in WW1 North Staffs Regiment and Captain. The Gordon Highlanders are not short of Slessor in their ranks. Looks like the Highlanders had associations with Aberdeen men here. And it could possibly have been a traditional recruiting ground.
James George spent 38 years with the same organisation, that being the Yorkshire Coal Owners Mutual Indemnity Co. This was in the days before the coal mining industry was nationalised, in the 1940s after the war. The main purpose of the organisation was to indemnify members who were usually employers with regard to compensation claims brought against them by their workers. The mining industry was a huge employer and there were plenty of accidents and worse to sort out.
James George retired in 1944.
It is uncertain why James George's daughter would be born in Worksop Nottingham as everything seems to revolve around Sheffield. He was certainly living there in 1931. Nottingham was an extensive coal mining area though near to Sheffield.

Page: 442Robert Arthur, James George's son attended King Edward V11 School Sheffield. He later was BA LLb, presumably Sheffield University. He became a Solicitor serving articles with Mr Lewis Emanuel Emmet, a prominent Sheffield Solicitor of Emmet and Taylor where he was sole partner. In 1931 Robert Arthur was the recipient of the Joseph Travers Smith Scholarship. Joseph Travers today is a big London firm of Solicitors and this Joseph Travers Smith, Solicitor, was the grandson of the original founder of the firm.
The scholarship probably gave him the opportunity to study law in a short space of time and probably had a condition that the recipient entered the law profession. It was a way of picking out the choice students.
During WW11 Robert Arthur was in the Irish Guards and rose to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and in 1949 he was awarded the rank of Honorary Captain. No doubt he was back in civilian life by then.
