Titus, George and Alice were all baptised on the same day.

George born was born 1789 and baptised at St Bartholomew Great Harwood  1793 abode Harwood and he gives on census actual place of birth as Whalley. There may be a choice here as to: was he born in Whalley or  Whalley Banks just outside Whalley in Clitheroe?  It could be Whalley Banks as his grandfather Kenyon was associated with there, so did Agnes go home for first child - not exactly anything unusual.

In the 1851 census of Blackburn, at 3 Mount St
Daniel Breakell, Lodger, Unm, 23, Assistant Draper, born Woodplumpton Lancashire, was living with Giles Cunleiffe, Head and Lurrance Copeland, lodger, Unm, 16, apprentice, St Michaels Preston

In Preston in 1853 he attended a funeral and is in the second carriage along with Thomas Copeland - no doubt related somehow.

By 1855 he was described as a silk mercer and draper and in April 1855 he was advertising for an apprentice. It seems like this business was not a great success as, he was as early as Feb 1856, advertising he had a sale of silks, shawls, merinos, furs, laces, calicos and flannels. It continued on a downward path until he got to a final sale.  There was an advert 25th April 1857 to the effect that the shop fixtures and fittings were to be sold in auction at the shop, in the occupation of Daniel Breakell, linen draper at 23A Fishergate.  By 2nd May 1857 a new occupant was opening in the premises as a dressmaker and milliner.

Daniel is on the landowners return of 1875 with holdings of 15 acres in Preston.  Although he is deceased this list was probably not compiled in 1875 but some time prior to publication.

Thomas HOUGHTON

A Thomas Houghton was baptised 3rd Nov 1717 at St Anne Woodplumpton with a father William of Lewth. Also a Robert Houghton was baptised 12th June 1720 at St Anne Woodplumpton  son of William of Lewth.  These two look like brothers and that the Thomas born 1717 is possibly the father of the William below who seems to be the only identifiable child here of the marriage of Thomas born 1717. William and Thomas father and son and vica versa combo is a popular one.

A William Houghton was baptised 24th Sep 1752 at St Anne  Woodplumpton the son of Thos Houghton of Leauth with no  mother's name recorded, however an educated guess is Ann Clarkson who married a Thomas Houghton at St Anne Woodplumpton 4th April 1743, both of Woodplumpton.  Ann was buried St Anne Woodplumpton on 9th Dec 1787 of Luth wife of Thomas Houghton.

William/Will married Margaret Preston St Michael on Wyre on 11th June 1792.  William was aged at least 40 and this may not be the first marriage of William, who was a husbandman of this parish and Margaret was a spinster also of this parish according to the register. Margaret was buried St Anne Woodplumpton as Peggy aged 52 on 9th July 1811 of Catforth, wife of William Houghton. Peggy died 7th Nov. William was buried 2nd Feb 1819 aged 66 St Anne Woodplumpton abode Catforth leaving a will content unknown.

In the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census this Thomas was a farmer born in Woodplumpton.  He was born about 1793-4.  As per the Marriage Bond below his father was most likely the above William Houghton, born 1752.

Thomas moves to Inskip early after marriage.  He was initiall a farmer, later emerging as an inn keeper and the name of his premises and whereabouts are unknown. He later reverts to farming. This seems to be a bit of a pattern with Houghtons, farming to pubs and back to farming or something else.

By 1861 Thomas is a farmer at Borden/s School Lane   Inskip with Sowerby where he farms 53 acres and employs 2 labourers.  Wife Charlotte is with him together with son George, described as farmers son unmarried aged 30 and daughter Margaret aged 27.  In 1871 Thomas is no longer at Borden/s as he died 9th Dec 1870.  His place of death is given as Little Eccleston or Little Eccleston Hall. It may be that he died at the home of his daughter Margaret who married John Clarke who was married in 1863 and was a farmer of Little Eccleston.

Henry seems to be a maltster and a farmer, not an unusual combination, as many had two jobs on the go in order to make a living. Maltster is interesting as they originally were working based in malting barley for  local consumption for the home and for slightly more commercial purposes in the pub who all brewed their own in the back yard for rinking on their own premises and perhaps each premises had their own distinctive brewed beer. There seems to be no mention of Henry being an actual brewer though he may have had the knowledge and made home brew, but this is speculative.  As Preston grew rapidly as a town it meant they could not build pubs and beer houses quick enough for the drinking habits of the working population  and the beer wasn't brewed fast enough either.  It  needed vast amounts  of malted barley to brew beer and barley initially was grown locally on the Fylde but it had to then be imported as that much was needed.

Henry was malting barley in Woodplumpton as well as farming and Henry was judge at a ploughing contest in 1844.   Henry was in 1846 selling his desirable residence and farm that he owned together with twenty-four acres as he was leaving the area. Also there was mention of land at Swill Brook in Woodplumpton in the occupation of Henry Breakell where an additional kiln might be erected at trivial expense.  There was also a warehouse room. Henry at this point was not popping off to Canada but on a shorter trip to Preston.

Preston Chronicle - 7 July 1838
Death by Drowning-Yesterday week an inquest was held before R. Palmer, Esq., at Woodplumpton, on the body of a child named James Dickinson. three years old, son of John Dickinson, of Woodplumpton, husbandman.   Henry Breakell, of Woodplumpton, farmer, said that on the Tuesday evening preceding, when he was on his way to Inskip with Sowerby, he saw the body of the deceased floating on the mill dam there, and that he immediately, with the assistance of a person named Thomas Houghton, got the deceased out of the, water, but he was quite dead. The father of the child was examined, but he only stated that he had last seen the child alive on the morning of Tuesday, when he was in good health. The jury immediately returned a verdict of "Found Drowned."

It looks as if he was in financial difficulty in July 1856 when the Preston Chronicle was advertising that any person who had a claim against Henry Breakell should send particulars to Thomas Dodd [Solicitor] and all who are indebted to Henry were requested to pay up.
Henry can't have lasted that much longer in Preston and he and his family went out to Canada.

John, Hugh's brother clearly has the same talent for maths as Hugh and Thomas, Hugh and John regularly appear in print and only occasionally does Thomas in connection with mathematical problems issues etc posing and solving them.  These are or were then probably complex matters. Hugh and John set up the Trinity School in Preston [not well documented] where John was mathematics master. It seems to me that there were a number of men in the Blackburn area [then  lumped in with Preston as Blackburn had Preston in its diocese] who had no actual proper formal educations as such but  displayed  obvious mathematical abilities for want of a better word and who met together now and again one of whom was John Huntington. They tried to encourage others who displayed brilliance including T T Wilkinson FRAS who went to sit with them. Wilkinson describes John as a mathematician of the old school.  Wilkinson was honoured that he was allowed to be with such men  of mature years.
