In the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 census he is consistently listed as being born in 1815/16 in Chilton, Berkshire and a J Grocer, Tallow Chandler journeyman or Tallow Chandler. The Baptism of Richard the son of Henry Butler Goddard and Sarah on 31 December 1815 matches the date and location of Richard's details in the census and that the father Henry, a farmer, is consistent with his marriage details to Charlottee Maunder.

On 15 December 1839 in the church of St James Westminster, Richard Goddard of full age, a bachelor with a profession of Tallow Chandler of King Street St James, Westminster, married Charlotte Maunder, of full age, a spinster of St James Street. Richard's father was identified as Henry Goddard a farmer and Charlotte's father was Thomas Maunder a cabinet maker. The witnesses were William West and Richard Godfrey.
Charlotte dies in 1863 and Richard Goddard, a 56 year old Tallow Chandler born in Chilton, Berkshire, and wife Emma, a dressmaker are found in the Hammersmith 1871 census. Emma is 45 (b1826) a dressmaker born in Westminster, St James.
To date the actual marriage has not been located and some feasible ones are discarded for the reasons set out below.

Note this a different Richard Goddard who was a builder, plumber or labourer had children in the 1881 census of Emma 14, Richard 12, Annie 10, James 8 and Frances 5. In the 1881 Census he was 36 and born in Islington. In the 1871 census wife Emma, aged 23, a laundress born Islington was also present together with Richard 2 and Emma 1 mth. Richard 25 was then a plumber's labourer. Some trees incorrectly link this Richard to the Richard, b 1815 Chilton, Berkshire.
In the 1881 census Emma is living as a lodger as a widow, dressmaker. So Richard died before 1881.

In the 1891 Census of Hammersmith, Emma Goddard is living on her own and listed as a widow, 65 years old (birth abt 1826) and a retired dressmaker born at Piccadilly, London.
In the 1901 Census of Hammersmith, Emma Goddard is a lodger, a widow, aged 74 (birth abt 1827), living on her own means abd being born at Piccadilly, London.
