According to Lesley Lewis' "Hird's Annals of Bedale" page 10, Volume 1, Robert Hird wrote that "Mary, wife of George Whitton, Butcher in Bedale was Godmother (to Robert Hird). She being a neighbour and my dear Mother's country Woman, who oft filled my little hands with fruit Pye. She died May 23rd 1774. Her Sister Margaret, (who by a Gretna Green wedding with the said George Whitton) endeavoured to entice me to call her Godmother, but to no avail; and now at this time, December 10th 1814, they are both very frendly and oft invite me to go and see them."
