The Thomas Knowles Charity, and the Loudscales (Lawdscales, Lowdscales) property, provides a good link to the Millers (Milners) descended from this Thomas as explained below.

Thomas Knowles Charity - which is still in operation today!
In a "Report of the Commissioners Appointed to inquire Concerning Charities: 24 Jan 1824" it says that by indentures of lease and release, the latter dated 8th February, 1686, Thomas Knowles, of Sowerby, conveyed to Evan Wall, Thomas Miller, and two others, their heirs and assigns, a messuage and certain lands thereto belonging, containing 56 acres or thereabouts, called Loudscales.  Note a Ralph Millner, Yeoman, of Swarby Inskip with Sowerby was buried at Loudscale on 5 Jun 1688, and his probate papers are in the Lancashire Archives WRW/A/R60C/25 dated 18 Jun 1688.  Also a Henry Millner, husbandman, of Loudscales in Goosnargh was buried on 10 Nov 1693 and whose probate papers are in the Lancashire Archives WRW/A/R60C/23.   A Henry Miller also had a son William Miller baptised on 26 Feb 1687/8 when living at Lawdscales in Goosnargh, William was buried 22 Mar 1688/9 also at Loudscale in Goosnargh.  So the Millers were living at and associated with Loudscales.

It is possible that the above Thomas Miller would have then been about 25-50 years old when he became a trustee. ie born about 1635-1660.  A possible Thomas is the one who married Elizabeth Blekkoe in 1667 in Sowerby and had two sons William b1670-1733 and Thomas b1672-1720.  Thomas (the husband of Elizabeth) dies in 1705 and his will makes no reference to Loudscales, but the wills of his sons' William b1670-1733, and Thomas b1672-1720 do.

According to the Lancashire Archives index (Document reference DDPR/12/7) a William Miller releases the Lawdscales property to his son and heir Thomas and to another son, John, all of Inskip with Sowerby, yeomen in 20 July 1728. That William would have been about 50-60 ie born about 1670 and it likely to be the above Thomas' son and heir, William b1670-1733 and then that William's son and heir Thomas b1702-1769 and second son John b1705-1785.

In 1770 in order to keep up the sufficient number of Trustees of the Knowles Charity, John Miller and Richard Miller, existing trustees also included William Miller, all three of Inskip with Sowerby, yeomen.

By 1770 the Thomas b1702-1769 was deceased and so John b1702-1785 likely included his eldest son Richard b1732-1829. The addition of William was probably John b1702-1785's second son William b1735-1817.

In about 1782 there was concern that the arrangements by the then trustees of the Knowles Charity were less than optimal for the poor.  The then trustees included John, Richard and William Miller, all three of Inskip with Sowerby, yeomen.

By 16th June, 1801, John Westby, of Upper Rawcliffe-with-Tarnacre, and Henry Porter, of Bretherton, were the the then surviving trustees of the Thomas Knowles Charity.

In July 1820 it was proposed to have 15 trustees for the Knowles Charity and these were proposed to be: William Birley, Hugh Hornby, Thomas Langton, William Blackburn, William Porter, John Porter, John Thornton, Ralph Millner, William Millner, Ralph Knowles, Robert Fairclough, Miles Shaw, William Shaw, Thomas Hornby, and John Fisher.  But by October 1823 William Shaw, Thomas Hornby, John Fisher, William Birley, Hugh Hornby, Thomas Langton, and William Porter, had not executed the trust deed and John Porter and William Millner were dead.

The William Milner who died between 1820 and 1823 was likely William b1768-1821, the school master of Newton, son of Thomas, the younger, b1738-1814, and Ralph Milner his older brother b1763-1733.  These are nephews of the above Richard b1732-1820 and William b1735-1817 via brother Thomas, the younger b1738-1814.
