SPINNERS ARM S LANCASTER ROAD
To be avoided!
This sounds like the most undesirable violent crime ridden place imaginable and there is just a whole litany of newspaper reports of the goings on in this pub. I hope Roger was a great big strapping man and as he is described as beer seller on his brothers probate this sums it up as to what this place was like.  It is a rough boozer. It was situated at numbers 84 and 85 in 1851 and then was numbered  to 61/62. From 1878 to 1893 mine host here was Thomas Sanderson, from 1883 -1885 his wife Ann took over as Thomas died.  From 1885 -1900 Roger Miner was there and he married widow Ann Sandiford. From 1900-1910 George Sandiford was there and he was the son of Ann Milner by first marriage to Thomas. George died 21st Aug 1910 aged 46. Next up was brother Alfred 1910-1917. In 1919 Florence Sandiford  owned the pub and was paid out compensation upon its demolition in 1919 -1920.
Also on Lancaster Road was the Griffins  Head at number 116 only a few doors from  the Spinners Arms and there is a Roger Milner there 1899-1900.  He could be just keeping it ticking over after death of Walter Pegg and until a new incomer Thomas Burman was available.

There are two John Milners of the right age in the 1841 census. One a male servant at Garstand and one a farmer married to Sarah in Bolton-le-Sands.  The one married to Sarah seems credible as they have chidren of Richard and Dorothy, both key names in this family.  In addition Richard b1837 is a Nephew to Robert Milner in the 1851 census.  Robert is this John's brother.  Richard turns out to be the illegitimate son of Eleanor (probably Ellen) the sister of John and Robert.

133. Thomas MILNER

Because this Thomas appears on the grave monument of John Milner of Inskip who died in 1829 (albeit with an error of one year in the date of death) it it likely that this Thomas is the son of John.  For that to be the case his mother is most likely from an earlier wife to John, probably Mary, as in the baptism record below.
