14 November. The Will of Ralph Milner late of the
Crescent Salford in the County of Lancaster Surgeon who
died 11 July 1882 at the Crescent was proved at Manchester
by Annie Lythgoe Milner Widow the Relict and Ralph
Mottram Milner Surgeon’s Assistant Harry Milner Grey Cloth
Agent and Edmund Taylor Milner Medical Student the Sons
all of the Crescent four of the Executors.

Mr Ralph Milner was a surgeon who practiced on Oldfield Lane for 40 years and became known as the "Oldfield Lane Bone Doctor". He was born at Roseacre, Lancashire and attended the nearby Kirkham Grammar School. On leaving this high class educational establishment he came to Manchester in 1834 and was apprenticed to a surgeon named Mr Owen and attended the Manchester School of Medicine. He qualified as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1840 and 12 months later became a licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries. No sooner had he been placed upon the medical register, he became associated with the celebrated original "Oldfield Lane doctor" Dr Taylor, to whom he was distantly related. On the death of Dr Taylor, Ralph Milner succeeded to the "extensive and lucrative" practice establish by the "renowned bone-setter".

Ralph after he succeeded to the practice did the surgery up.  He had new counter installed and had the place whitewashed.  Those who could pay the guinea fee were seen first followed by those who could pay half a guinea.

Ralph Milner married Mary Ann Mottram, daughter of Mr John Mottram, Brewer of Salford, at Manchester Cathedral on 8th June 1844. They had several children, but tragically they all died young. Mary Ann was to die young as well, but Ralph married again to Mary Ann's cousin, Annie Lythgoe, daughter of Mr Abraham Mottram of Warrington. This marriage was fruitful as they had at least 11 children including Edmund Taylor Milner BA, who at the time of his father's death was a student at Owens College and destined to become the third "Oldfield Lane doctor".

Mr Ralph Milner held no honorary or re-numerative appointments. He was a well-respected and excellent surgical practitioner. He professed a mild, but decidedly conservatism and sometimes visited the Crescent Political Club. For a considerable length of time before he died he suffered from an affliction of the heart, but it was only shortly before he died that he relinquished the full activity of his medical practice. However, it was at his residence, No.6 The Crescent, that he died on Wednesday 11th July 1882, aged 64. His remains were interred in the family vault, at Salford Cemetery on Friday 13th July.

British Newspapers
Ralph Milner died 11 July 1882 at Salford, aged 64.  He was born 14 May 1818 at Roseacre, near Kirkham.  He was a Churchman and a Conservative. He was a retiring nature and rarely took an active part in politics. He had been in the medical profession for 40 years. He was one of the vice-presidents of the Crescent Ward Conservative Club, Salford.  He was the son of Ralph Milner of Roseacre, near Kirkham.

He has been suffering from an affliction of the heart for some time.

It is not known why and how Ralph in 1840 hooked up with Edmund Taylor Snr and what he thought of his practice/practices etc., but obviously well enough to name a son Edmund Taylor Milner after Edmund Taylor Snr.  It is written that Edmund Snr considered that a Surgeon was needed as he was not a young man and was rapidly declining.  Another explanation given by Edmund Jnr, son  of Edmund, was that it was done as a great favour but with no further explanation. Ralph it is said must have had influential friends as there were people willing to part with good money to Edmund Taylor Snr bone setter for their sons to be taught by him.
Ralph and Edmund probably had a different approach to medical matters, Edmund with no qualifications dealt with fractures and dislocations and was a dab hand with the Whitworth Red Bottle and Ralph was more scientific. Maybe they learned from what each other had to offer.  Edmund probably was in a time warp and never most likely advanced from what he knew and stuck with the old ways. In fact after 6 months Ralph was seeing patients on his own and picked it all up quickly. These two are said to be distantly related but where and how this relationship supposedly arose is a mystery.
There are archived letters between various members of the Milner family in the 1930s that look like they may be exploring this issue, amongst others.

Ralph must have become increasingly pressurised in the 1840s as Edmund Snr was becoming older and Junior was possibly becoming more and more unreliable.  The assumption here  is that as Edmund Snr lost his last surviving son Edmund in 1851 and  somehow he left the practice to Ralph. The practice under Ralph eventually moved from the premises on Oldfield Road and went further down Oldfield Road to opposite the Dispensary in November 1866.  There were apparently a few numbers on Oldfield Road associated with the doctors but it seems that there were houses where a patient could be taken to in case of an accident or illness until the doctor could attend so this is perhaps why there is a connection to so many numbers on Oldfield Road.

Ralph was also associated with a few houses on The Crescent/Crescent/Crescent Parade  Salford where he lived and in 1851 he is at number 5. He then moves on to 6 and 7. He saw patients at number 6 and no doubt these were the ones who were better off private clients and paying. Living at 6 at the date of her marriage on 11th April 1888 was also Ada Lees who was related to Ralph via his sister, Annie who married William Lees.  Ada being one of her children who married a Bank manager named Edward Gittins and lived in Cheshire. Ada was executor of the will of Ann Millner who died in Manchester.

Ralph began legal proceedings in connection with the use of the term "The Oldfield Doctor" when an injunction was being sought to stop the use of this term.  There is Milner v  Reed  3rd Feb 1870 heard before Vice Chancellor of The Court of Justice,  Sir John Wickens. It seems that when Ralph moved further down Oldfield Road because it is said he had been turned out of the time honoured premises, somehow by a Taylor family representative, who then leased the premises to another surgeon who then occupied the old premises and  began describing himself as The Oldfield Lane Doctor.   An injunction was issued to stop the defendant from using the term.  It is possible this mysterious Taylor representative was a trustee and or successor/s thereof or even of all three of the estates of the two Edmund Taylors who had same exors and trustees as each other.

Ralph was, from 29th Sep 1852 for a period of 14 years at a rent of 30 pounds a year, leasing the surgery and hereditaments. In 1854 there is also a lese of a dwelling house and outbuildings from the trustees of the executors of Edmund the elder to Ralph at 60  pounds a year.  In 1866 the surgery lease ended and the troubles with the new doctor began.

Chester Chronicle - 12 August 1939
FRODSHAM
DEATH OF MR. R. M. MILNER.
Frodsham has lost a familiar figure in Mr Ralph Mottram Milner whose death occurred at his home. The Cottage, Fluin-lane, on Wednesday. Mr. Milner who was 82, was the eldest son of the late Dr. Ralph Milner a well-known Manchester surgeon.  He had lived in Frodsham for 50 years, and was keenly interested in many of the activities in the district. Sympathy is expressed with his widow. The funeral takes place at 3 o’clock at Frodsham Parish Church on Tuesday.

Cheshire Observer - 19 August 1939
THE LATE MR. RALPH M. MILNER
The funeral took place on Tuesday at the Parish Church, of Mr. Ralph Mottram Milner. Mr Milner, who was aged 82, was eldest son of the late Dr. Ralph Milner of Salford and Frodsham. His residence, The Cottage, was used by his father as a country home, and his connection with Frodsham extended over half a century. Mr Milner went to reside with his mother at The Cottage 55 years ago, marrying about ten years later, Miss E. J. Davies, daughter of the late Mr Thomas Davies, of Frodsham, by whom he is survived. He was a staunch Churchman, a Sunday School teacher at one time, a trustee of the Boys School, and of the Savings Bank. Always fond of an open air life, Mr. Milner in his younger days, was a familiar figure on horseback or driving his carriage. The funeral service was largely attended. Rev. John Milner, Vicar of Sudbury, brother of the deceased, and Rev. Dr. M. W. Myres officiated. The principal mourners were: Rev. John Milner brother), Dr. A. Milner, Mr. J. B. Milner (nephews), Mr. J. G. Davies (brother-in-law) and Mrs. Davies, Mr. H. V. Davies (nephew) and Mrs Davies, Mr. Don L. Davies and Mr. Bert Davies (nephews), Mr. and Mrs. H. Gold.
Other present included Messrs. L. Pollard, F. Basnett, T. Booth and G. Williams(managers of the Trustee Savings Bank), Dr. H H. James. Mr. C. E. Reynolds (Westminster Bank), Mr. J. L. P. Davies. Mr. Jas. Smith. Rev. A. Hills, Messrs. H. W. Greenleaves, O. C. Kemp, H Rodgers. T. Astbury, and Miss Garner. In his sermon at the Parish Church on Sunday morning, the Vicar paid tribute to the life and character of the late Mr. Milner.

The Mottram middle name here is a nod to both wives of his father. In 1881 he was at  Crescent Salford with parents and some siblings and was aged 24 and a surgeons assistant. The assumption is that he was assisting his father though father ought to be well connected enough to secure an assistants place with people he knew. Father's practice was busy and a money maker, he was getting on and needed help. As his father  died in 1882, what did Ralph Mottram do? His brother, Edmund Taylor succeeded to the practice eventually so who was running it in the meantime as Edmund was about 17 when his father died, may be Ralph?  If Ralph Mottram kept on in medicine he,when things were tightened up regarding qualifications, would have had to have been qualified to continue.  In the notice of his marriage Ralph has no occupation.  If he had qualified medically, it would be expected that he would use his qualification Dr or Surgeon?  Sylvanus Milner his relative states he never qualified. As his mother died in 1895 in   Fluin Cottage Frodsham.  Were Ralph and mother living together? Ralph married the following year having inherited his mothers house.  Ralph was executor of mother's estate along with brothers John, Frank and Edmund. On probate documents he was described as "gentleman".  Ralphs address on his death is given as Fluin Cottage.
