WALKER Joseph of Loughrigg Carrs-crescent Formby Lancashire died 18 June 1944 Probate Liverpool 24 August to Thomas Edgar Walker medical practitioner. Effects 21,113 pounds.

BMJ - 15th July 1944
With the passing of JOSEPH WALKER, M.R.C.S., L.S.A., on June 18 at the ripe age of 93 years the Liverpool Division has lost a courtly Victorian physician. He first settled in the district at Kirkby in 1888, and in 1899 came to Bootle, where he practised   for 40 years before retiring to Formby. He joined the B.M.A. in 1884 and quickly became interested in medical politics. He was Representative for Liverpool Division at six Annual Meetings and had been chairman of the Division. He took a great deal of interest in the first National Health Insurance Act, and though he never joined the panel he was always ready to help those practitioners who wished to join ; he served on the Bootle Insurance Committee for some years and went as a representative of the Bootle Local Medical and Panel Committee to the Annual Panel Conference. He also took a great interest in the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund, and for many years was honorary secretary for Bootle. In motoring he was one of the pioneers, and I well remember his De Dion single-cylinder car. He was an avid reader of his Journal, and whether it was an academic leading article or a medico  political point which affected the profession generally, he was as ready to discuss the one as he was to repudiate the other his grasp of the essential point was great, and his judgment almost unerring and at times uncanny. To the younger generation  of doctors he was most kind, always ready to help with sound, fatherly advice, tempered with a gentle humour that endeared him to all fellow practitioners and patients alike.

Death Date: 2 Jan 1936

Thomas Edgar Walker

Mary Jane Wade was born on 29 December 1947 at 5 Corfs Buildings, Preesons Row, Liverpool. She was the fourth of the five children born to Christopher Wade (1810-99), a bookkeeper-cum-victualler who would forge a career as a prosperous estate agent, and his wife, Ellen Gregson (1819-91). The birth of Mary Jane was registered by her father on 17 January 1848.

Christopher Wade and Ellen Gregson couple had married in accordance with the rights of the Berean Universalist Church at their chapel in Bold Street, Liverpool on 8 September 1838. The Liverpool in which their family would advance financially and socially was a city in which established ideas, including the status of the class-ridden Church of England, were open to question. The Bereans began as a sect following former Scottish Presbyterian minister John Barclay (1734-98). The word "Berean" was chosen to reflect the text of Acts 17. Verse 11 reads:

"These (Berea)were more noble then those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so."

Mary Jane had four siblings:

1. Margaret Ellen (1841-85)
2. James Whiteside (1842-1920)
3. Robert Webster (1846-1916)
4. Catherine Gregson (1850-1937)

Both Margaret's brothers would emigrate to the United States of America, settling in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York.

Towards the end of the eighteen-sixties, as Mary Jane reached her legal majority, Christopher Wade built Lytham House, North Park Road, Kirkby, naming the property after the home of his ancestors. It is a detached two storey property, built of brick with the ground floor stuccoed with horizontal grouting. Christopher and Ellen had a clutch of grandchildren and perhaps it was hoped that successive Wades- a son and then a grandson- would make their home at Lytham House. However, the only Wade grandson, Claude, was born after his father, Robert Webster Wade had emigrated to the United States of America and settled in Onondaga, New York. It is known that Christopher tried to sell Lytham House in the early eighteen-eighties. How the property was maintained is a mystery. The censuses of 1871-1891 show the household as employing only one female servant. The house would probably have been relinquished had it not been for Mary Jane and her husband.

Mary Jane Wade had married Joseph Walker (1851-1944) at St Chad, Kirkby, Lancashire on 7 June 1877. The marriage strengthened an existing the tie between the Walker and Wade families. Mary Jane's brother, James Whiteside Wade wed Dorothy Walker (1847-1933) at Holy Trinity, Hoylake, Wirral in 1866. Joseph Walker was a pharmaceutical chemist with a goal was to practice medicine. In 1883 he would qualify as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons and a Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries. Meanwhile, he and Mary Jane lived part of the year at Lytham House and the remainder in Staffordshire to enable him to study and work towards his qualifying examinations.

Mary Jane gave birth to Helen Mary Walker (1879-1908) in Staffordshire, where she was baptised at St James and St John, Longton, Staffordshire on 2 October in the year of her birth. The census of 1881 locates the Walker family home at Lytham House. Mary Jane's second child, Thomas Edgar (1882-1974) was born in Dresden, Staffordshire on 29 August and baptised in early October. The 1891 census again enumerated the family at Lytham House, following the death of Ellen Wade earlier that year. Joseph was qualified to practice medicine now and worked from a practice in nearby Bootle. The photograph shows a Walker/Wade family group outside Lytham House.

Mary Jane's father, Christopher Wade, died in 1899. As one of his four surviving children, she inherited a quarter share of his estate. This necessitated the sale of Lytham House. It was, perhaps, a welcome move. Thomas Edgar Walker was commencing medical studies that would need funding. He qualified in medicine with the M.B., Ch.B. of the University of Liverpool in 1904. Meanwhile, the Walker family found a comfortable villa in Merton Road, Bootle. It was to be Mary Jane's home until her death.

Mary Jane retained contact with the family of her deceased, Margaret Ellen, wife of Thomas Martin (1820-99). None of Christopher Wade's Martin grandsons inherited the fifth share that would have been their mother's has she lived and the partiality of Thomas Martin's Will would cause strife into the future. In April 1902, Dr Joseph Walker was present at the birth and death of Olga Emily Martin, a child of Mary Jane's nephew, Percy William (1866-1914) and his wife, Rose Alice (1872-1947). Indeed, it was Joseph that recommended their subsequent child, Roger Harry Frank Martin (1903-51) to live beyond industrial England in a cool climate with clean air. This medical advice took Roger to Reval in the Baltic-German region of the then Russian Empire.

Mary Jane's daughter, Helen Mary, married Guy D'Arcy Meynell (1878-1947) at St Matthew, Bootle in 1906. Guy had been born in Madikeri, Coorg Province, India. The couple made their home with Joseph and Mary Jane in Merton Road. Guy was an engineer's draftsman with an ambition to match that of his father in law. Helen would not live to see him fulfil his goals in civil engineering and business. She died at Bootle on 27 December 1908 aged 29 years and was buried at Anfield Cemetery.

The young Dr Thomas Edgar Walker married Hilda Gertrude Spencer-Smith (1882-1974) in his native Staffordshire in 1910. They would give Mary Jane and Joseph four grandchildren: Phyllis Margaret (1911-98), Ronald Joseph Spencer (1913-94), Norman Douglas (1918-96), and Helen Barbara (1921-2001). All but Phyllis pursued careers in medicine. At the time of his own death in March 1974, Tom Walker had just retired as a General Practitioner in Bootle with a service record in medical practice longer than any other British doctor at that time.

In 1922, Mary Jane and Joseph had the joy of welcoming Dorothy Wade (née Walker) sister of Joseph and widow of Marry Jane's brother, James Whiteside Wade, when she arrived home in Britain with her two surviving daughters: Ann Alice (1867-1938) and the lively Ellen (1867-1940).

Mary Jane Walker died at Merton Road, Bootle on 2 January 1936, less than a week after her eighty-eighth birthday. She was interred with her daughter, Helen, at Anfield Cemetery.

Dr Joseph Walker gave up the property that had been their home for almost four decades to with his nieces, Ann Alice and Ellen, until their deaths. He lived to see his grandson, Ronald, a captain in Royal Army Medical Corps, marry Joan Maureen Gerard at St Mark, Worsley, Lancashire on 8 October 1941. Less happily, Joseph died knowing that Dr Ronald Joseph Spencer Walker of the Royal Army Medical Corps was a prisoner of the Japanese in a distant internment camp. He must have missed Mary Jane. Joseph died on 18 June 1944, aged 93 years. A funeral service was held at Holy Trinity Church, Formby at 2 pm on 22 June, followed by interment at Anfield Cemetery at 3.15 pm. On 23 September 1948 Thomas Patrick Walker, a great-grandson of Mary Jane and Joseph, was laid to rest in their grave.
