Death Certificate of son George Craig lists father's occupation as weaver.  In the 1841 census, John Craig is a hand loom weaver.  In the 1851 census, he is a laborer.  On the death certificates of his daughter Jean and son William, he is described as a handloom weaver.  His son John's marriage certificate calls him a pitheadman, and young John's death certificate says simply "laborer."  His wife's death certificate describes him as a general laborer.

If John Craig followed tradition in naming his children, his eldest son William was named for his father William.

JJohn is living with his daughter Jane Smith (nee Craig) in the 1851 census. As his wife, Mary had moved back with her son William in Hamilton by the 1861 census and was listed as widow, it is presumed that John had died by this date.  There are no obviously statutory records of his death so he most likely died between 1851 and 1855.
