Holgate was a good surname for the area of Sawley and they had most probably been around and about the area long before this William. They are still around as several Holgate brothers at Sawley Grange were asking for exemption from enlistment in WW1 because they were doing vital down on the farm.

The start of identifiable relevant Tippings may well begin here with a Holgate marriage via Frances a daughter of William Holgate. While some Tippings were Quakers some were evidently not.

William Holgate is said to be born about 1625 with no clues as to where he may have been baptised or married but he died in 1693 and his burial is in the records of Marsden indicating he was a Quaker.  William was of Sawley, a place that did not have a Church of its own. The inhabitants, Holgate otherwise, do not seem to be baptised buried or married in any other particular nearby church.

William Holgate was a husbandman so he was probably growing some crops, tending the land keeping animals and the like.

William was a Quaker and quite clearly so but he wouldn't have begun life as one. By 1657 he was Quaker as evidenced by the recorded births of some his children in Quaker records. The first known identifiable child appears to be a Mathew and he may well have been born before William turned Quaker.  Mathew his son was also a Quaker.

As Quakers William, and others, would not have set foot in an Anglican Church so they had to carry out their practices and worship, in accordance with their beliefs, in their own way and certainly not in the open. The problem was, it was illegal for more than 5 people to come together for religious purposes called a conventicle.  So it all had to be done in secret. Meetings mainly happened in the early years in the houses, farms, barns and buildings of other believers. Though there was not necessarily safety in numbers as many were turned in by people who they would have known, possibly for generations. And some of those who reported on Quakers were even neighbours.  The Quakers would be taken away to gaol without an arrest warrant ever having been issued, and by men armed with pistols.

A popular place to meet in the area in question was to travel to was Marsden in Burnley for a gathering or meeting.  The Quakers kept records and William and some of his children are in the records of Marsden.

It may be that William Holgate was a writer and how he obtained these skills is unknown.  He could have attended school as there would have been already long established places he could have attended but this education would have had to be paid for.  It looks as if Quaker tracts of 1660 by  a William Holgate were probably written by him and this theory is strengthened when it was discovered that he was writing years later a work dated 3rd march 1683 consisting of 11 pages "To all those who desire satisfaction in the case of oaths shewing how far under the law it was lawful to swear and in any case under the Gospel it is forbidden".

In 1686 William Holgate is writing again "A brief collection  of certain instances of Holy Scripture and ancient laws of  England concurring against persecution oppression and injustice recommended to the serious consideration of all friends to the King".  This was a book that was being sold at the sign of the Crooked Billet, Holloway Lane, Shoreditch London, published by Andrew Sowle for 1d. This late burst into writing may be perhaps explained by the fact that William was himself persecuted.

At his own home in Sawley, in December 1682, where he was having a meeting with neighbours he was reported to the authorities by John Lawson and a Richard. It looks as if William was a regular offender and probably well known to the authorities who may have been on his case. He was taken away and put in gaol and it seems, to be regarded by commentators a particularly hard case of "suffering", as he had to pay over Pounds 26 by way of a fine.  That fine was satisfied by the removal of his goods.  He was then arrested on a warrant directed to the constables of Sawley, put in gaol again, as William didn't take the required oath.  How he got out is not known as normally it was a long stay until there was compliance. This led to death in some instances.

No doubt this persecution had an effect on himself and his family and may go some way to accounting for why some of the family left the country especially if they felt that they were specifically being targeted.

The persecution eventually got a little less when on 1st January 1689 it became legal for Quakers to gather in a property providing it was registered for such purposes.  Also legislation was passed in order for them to affirm rather than take an oath.  William submitted his application and became duly registered on 11th January 1689 at Wetherby Sessions in Yorkshire. Another application from the same manor as William was by a John Tipping but was crossed through.  Where this man fits in the Tipping tree is unknown for certain.  But is does confirm that there was a Quaker individual in Sawley in 1689 who may or may not be the husband of one of William's daughters.

In 1695 a John Tipping has his house at Sawley Grange registered at Knaresborough Yorkshire.

It is also said that William Holgate attended if not founded the meeting house at Twiston and this had an early burial ground.
