Death Date: 26 Jun 1891Joseph entered the world of banking instead of the licensed trade followed by so many of his family. From the start to the finish of his working life he was a banker and rose up from clerk/cashier, possibly sub manager, and then manager.
On 7th Feb 1856 at All Saints Elton Bury, Joseph married Helen Elizabeth Ainsworth. Helen seems to be freely interchangeable with Ellen and was a daughter of Jane and James Ainsworth of Elton Bury. By 1858 Joseph is at Derby Terrace Manchester Road Bury presumably with Ellen [as per baptismal transcription] who was born 13th August 1838 and baptised St Marys Bury. At baptism her father was a book keeper [later an agent] and there had been a previous Ellen in 1826 who died in 1834.
It is clear that Joseph was a free mason as was his brother William. Joseph crops up in various accounts in masonic literature. He very often crops up in the capacity of treasurer. Joseph was certainly present at the inauguration in Dec 1876 at The Railway Hotel Ramsbottom of the Starkie Lodge no 1634 a new lodge created for the ease of masons who lived on this particular side of Bury as otherwise they had to go too far afield to carry out their activities. Joseph became its new treasurer though he seems to be treasurer of other organisations as well. It looks as if he was also into stocks and share dealing as a broker.
Joseph was also one of the executors of the will of his father in law James Ainsworth.Towards the end of his life Joseph lived at Spring Well House 94 Manchester Road Bury. This house appears with various spellings namely as one word, as two and with or without an s and with or without House. This was near to his sister Ellen Oram who lived at 110 Manchester Road. Joseph probably didn't own 94 Manchester Road as the address is consistent with Lord Derby being the freeholder so Joseph was leasing it or subleasing it. It is a house that is still there and was a fair size and probably had a nice garden and interior. Since Joseph's time it has been council offices, other office accommodation and is no longer a dwelling house and the once nice garden it had is now a tarmac car park. Following the death of Joseph some members of the family may well have had to live elsewhere. Joseph his son turns up dying at Bank House Maghull and that was his sister Sarah's address.
There was a notice placed in The Manchester Times to the effect that Joseph died at Spring Well House 26th June 1891 in his 61st year. At least one child was resident with him there, namely son Joseph, who seemed to then go to live with a sister. Joseph Snr left an estate of Pounds 811- 17/- 9d. His occupation was given at death as stock and share broker. Joseph had a will and a codicil exors were wife, daughter Sarah and son in law husband of Florence Amy.

Probate Registry Principal RegistryJohn Ayreton was born in 1840 and he duly followed his Polding relatives to Ampleforth for a Benedictine education. He then attended RVC and qualified as a veterinary surgeon. Unlike his brothers James and William he stayed in Bury and had a veterinary practice at 34 Silver Street Bury and he continued to live in the family home at 2 St Marys Place so he like his father it was not far from work to home and back again.
John married Ann Handley daughter of James Handley born 1802. History does not record what either family thought of this marriage as Handley were Church of England and Polding were Catholic with a long Catholic history. At one point Polding are recorded as recusants and are on the Papist records in the 1760s. No doubt Ann would have had to have received instruction in the Catholic faith, been baptised as such and agreed that children would be brought up in the faith. Where she may have been baptised is unknown and her marriage is a bit of a conundrum. Ann and John certainly were married in a civil ceremony in the Register Office in Bury in 1869 where the Registrar attended. The question arises as to was there a religious marriage as well? The Bury Times seems to think so as their marriage at St Marie Catholic Church is reported and that they were married by Fr Boardman 29th April. However there is no such marriage recorded in the registers of St Marie so a mystery.
The writer wonders if Ann moved in a narrow Catholic circle as she only once seems to be a witness at any weddings and all God Parents to her children are non Handley.
There were children baptised at St Marie and the registers are in Latin.
1 Maud Mary, named after her aunt born, 24th Sep 1870 baptised 2nd Oct. God Parents William Theo Polding and Alice Eaves Polding another with a civil and religious ceremony but both are recorded. Maud Mary died 1878.2 Clara born 10th Aug 1873 and baptised 17th Aug 1873 God Parents Oswald Polding and John Francis Polding. Clara attended for her Benedictine education at St Monica's, Gargrave Road Skipton Clara was later a sister at the Benedictine community in Colwich Staffordshire and Colwich lays approx 7 miles out of Stafford. The property was purchased for the order in 1835 from Robert Shirley Viscount Tamworth by The Very Rev Mother Mary Clare Knight. At the time it was known as the Mount Pavillion House, a large property sitting in 50 acres and by then an already old building.
Following occupation by the order it was known as St Benedict's Priory and was later raised to the status of Abbey in 1928 and took the name St Marys Clara died 16th March 1929 presumably still in Holy Orders. As James Bede Polding of Burnley the vet died in Staffordshire it seems suddenly after having been taken ill with inflammation was he visiting her?
3 James Bede Polding born 18th June 1875 and baptised 27th June 1875. God Parents James Bede Polding and Alice Emma Polding. James Bede seems to have carried the rank of Major. This man was of the East Lancashire Regiment. James married Gwendoline Rutter at Chorlton on Medlock Register Office in 1915. Again he would have been 40 so either a late marriage or a widower? Two identifiable children followed marriage Patricia Mary in 1917 and John Bede 1918 these children seem to be born Cheetham Manchester and this is not Chorlton on Medlock area. John Bede a son is said to have died in 1999 on the Isle of Wight 22nd Feb possibly a marriage to Kathleen Royal /Royle in Denbeighshire [Wales] 1956 2 children?
Patricia Mary married John Robert Harvey the eldest son of Harry and Mary Garland Harvey of "Leatham" Beaconsfield Road Loughborough Leicester. John attended Loughborough Grammar School and worked prior to WW11 at Messrs Woolsey Ltd. John joined up in 1940 and served 2 and a half years in Iceland before going to Burma in 1944 where he was killed in action 21st March 1945 and was buried in Taaukyan Cemetery. At death he left wife Patricia Mary whom he married in 1943. John served with the Leicestershire Regiment 2nd Bn Royal Berkshires he attained the rank of Lieutenant John had a brother Lance Corp B Harvey who was a German POW for at least 5 years.
Major Polding is said to have died 1941 aged 65 in which case he died at Wicken Cottage Hopwood Heywood and this is Rochdale and in keeping with Bury. He did not leave a will and Letters of Administration were granted to Gwendoline Polding estate Pounds 1600. Gwendoline died 14th April 1973 of 171 Marsland Road Sale Cheshire spelled Gwendolen and she must have been a good age. Probate granted to? Estate Pounds 2845. NB Sale is in the Bucklow registration district.4 Hilda born 10th Aug 1877 baptised 8th Sep 1877 God Parents Richard and Elizabeth Gornall and Agnes Hilda also attended St Monica's Skipton for her education and unlike her sister did not appear to opt for a religious life in Holy Orders .Hilda died as of Firfield House Addlestone Surrey in 1955 a spinster. Probate to her Pounds 288 estate was taken out by Patricia Harvey widow.
Ann Polding nee Handley died 6th Aug 1889 (probate Index says 16th Aug 1889) at St Marys Place Bury leaving an estate Pounds 118 7/- 6d and John Ayreton obtained a grant. John Ayreton wasn't far behind as he died 5th June 1890 leaving an estate of Pounds 5500 Probate to his estate was granted to Oswald Polding 7 Tacketts Street Blackburn Solicitor. John Francis Polding, Maud Mary Polding and Agnes Polding. It is interesting that also living at 2 Marys Place was the brother of Ann Polding namely James a land surveyor who was in 1861 living with Sister Ann and parents at Belgrave Place Bury. How long he had been living at St Marys place is not known. In the 1881 census there is a James Handley, an unmarried, male aged 39 an Engineer born in Bury, Lancashire living as a lodger with Grace Darby, a 67 year old widow and farmer born Derby, and her niece Sarah Goodwin, unmarried, aged 19 born Derby. They were living at Upper Otter Hole Bishops Lane, Hartington Upper Quarter, Derby.
James was of 2 St Marys Place Bury and died as of their 25th April 1887 and his brother in law John Ayreton placed a notice in the press. James left a will and an estate of Pounds 133 -6/- and 5d. The estate was proved by Joseph Handley the younger Gent and Commission Agent the nephew of one of the executors.

PAGE: 534By 1871 Joseph was still of 13 Union Square and an engineer's draughtsman. By 1874 he was living at 11 Grafton Street Bolton and was described as an engineer. Joseph married at St Peters Bolton on the 4th July 1874 to a Louisa Entwistle said to be of Bury. Both were of age Josephs father was Ale and Porter dealer deceased. Louisa looks as if she was already pregnant and was this cause of the marriage.
There were two children Louisa born 12th Jan 1875 and William born 25th Dec 1877. Both children were baptised on the same day, 24th March 1879, at Bridge Street Wesleyan Methodist Chapel Bolton. At the time of baptism abode was given as 25 Mere Hall Street Bolton.
In 1881 the two children are with Mary Ann Handley their paternal grandmother at 33 Alpha Street West Pendleton. Mary Ann died in 1890 in Salford.
Joseph Chadwick Handley had filed a petition for the dissolution of his marriage at Bolton Courts. In March 1880 there was hearing in open court where there were witnesses giving evidence. The case was Handley v Handley and Heaton. It appears to be a petition brought by Joseph regarding the conduct of his wife Louisa and it was no doubt based around her association with another man named Heaton who found himself named co-respondent on the petition and this smacks of adultery. It obviously involved the giving of evidence and on the 11th March 1880 and the manager of the White Lion Vaults in Bolton gave evidence to the fact that he had seen Mrs Handley and a man named Heaton frequently together in the bar and Heaton told him Handley was his girl but the manager knew she was Mrs Handley.
Joseph must have been won and he and Louisa was no longer an item which left Joseph with two children to look after so they went to live with grandma and their uncle Edward at Alpha Street Pendleton. In 1886 the Preston Herald reports that Joseph Chadwick Handley aged 34, engineer, had appeared before the Magistrates as he was drunk and had been exhibiting disorderly behaviour on the 19th of January. Joseph had most likely spent a night in the cells.
