Dundee Courier - 14 oct 1896 p5
MR THOMAS SPALDING
Mr Spalding is the youngest Commissioner, having only been elected two years ago to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Provost Bridie. He is a native of Blairgowrie, being a son of Mr Wm. Spalding, late of Pondfauld, now of Balconnel, Brechin. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs Kinmond, Luke, & Co., Ericht Linen Works, he went to Dundee and after a short stay there he went to India twenty years ago. Three years ago he returned home, and since then his health has been rather indifferent, necessitating a voyage to India last winter. He is a member of committee of the Mechanics’ Institute and a member of the Bowling Club.
Although retiring now, Mr Spalding contemplates, when his health permits, of offering his services to the ratepayers as a Commissioner.Indian Daily News - 7 April 1897

We learn by the mail just in, that Mr. Spalding who was formerly well known in jute circles in Calcutta, has purchas ed the residential estate of Drumellie, in

DEATHS
At Bright View, Blairgowrie, on the 8t inst., Thomas Salding, aged 46 (long resident in Calcutta), eldest son of William Spalding, Balconnel.Indian news - 14 October 1897 p14
The Late Mr. Thomas Spalding.- The large circle of hie friends in Calcutta receivedwith sadness the news which came by wire on Saturday morning that Mr Thomas Spalding was no more. He died at his native place, Blairgowrie, in Perthshire, near which he had recently acquired some landed property. He served his apprenticeship to the Jute Trade with Messrs. Kinmond Luke and Co. Dundee and Blairgowrie and came to India, first to the Champdani Mill; afterwards he was in the office of Messrs. Ernsthausen and Co. as salesman of the Howrah Mills, and latterly, during the remainder of his stay here, was assistant with Messrs. Jardine, Skininer and Co. in connection with their two Jute Mills. Failing health compelled him to go home, and it was hoped that his native air would effect his restoration to health again.
But the news received from time to time was not hopeful, although he was going about attending to the interests of those Calcutta mills, for which he was the Dundee agent. He died on Friday.
As a business man he was keen and shrewd, and possessed an interior knowledge of his trade. In politics he was a Radical to the backbone, and was never ashamed at any time to give a reason for the faith that was in him. Ecclesiastically he was brought up as a United Presbyterian, and believed in and fought for religious freedom and religious equality, in friendship he was staunch and true. Somewhat brusque in manner and plain-spoken in speech as some Scotchmen occasionally are, people had to know him for a little before they discovered the genuine ring of his honest and kindly disposition.
His loss will be severely felt by her to whom he was so happily mated, and by his three children, to all of whom, in their hour of sorrow, their friends in Calcutta will extend their affectionate sympathy. Will reference: Spalding Thomas, 24/1/1898 of Drummellie, residing at Bright View, Blairgowrie, d. 08/10/1897 at Blairgowrie, testate

WELL-KNOWN ANGUS FARMER
THE LATE MR W. L. SPALDING OF BALCONNEL
One of the best-known farmers in the area, Mr W.L. Spalding of Balconnel died at Deuchar Fern, on Wednesday. Mr Spalding who retired from active farming about six years ago, was in Stracathro Hospital last year for some time undergoing an operation to his leg. On Tuesday last he had attended the Brechin Mart, but on the following morning he had a heart attach and passed away before the doctor arrived. He was about 76.
Mr Spalding belonged to Blairgowrie. Nearly 70 years ago his father bought Balconnel, in the parish of Menmuir, and he followed his father in the farm. He was held in high regard as a successful and very progressive farmer. Over the years he had always been eager to study and try new methods. Some time ago he took over the farm of Rome on the Balnamoon estate.
An active member of Angus Agricultural Association for many years Mr Spalding was a Director of Brechin Agricultural and Trading Company. Even after he retired he regularly attended the Mart. His tall spare figure will be missed as well as the shrewd experience in Mr Spalding's characteristically quiet way.
Farming, however, did not occupy all his time nor interest. He retired only last year from Angus County Council on which he had represented Lethnot since 1924. He was a former chairman of the Roads Committee and a member of the Valuation Court. He was Convener of the Executive Committee under the Diseases of Animals Act. As a County Councillor he was also a member - and a very useful member, particularly where Menmuir and Lethnot affairs were concerned - of Brechin District Council.
He was always very interested in education, serving on the old Menmuir School Board and later on Angus Education Committee. He took a special interest in Menmuir School and its welfare. He was a member of Stracathro and Brechin Hospitals Broard and a J.P. for Angus.
Mr Spalding had been, an elder of Menmuir Church since 1917 and session clerk for eleven years. His service as an elder was recognised in a presentation made to him last year.
Mrs Spalding died four wars ago. The eldest son, Mr W. Liddell Spalding. C.A. is with a London firm: the younger, Mr Andrew Spalding now farms Balconnel (as the third generation in the farm) and also Rome.
Some time ago Mr Spalding bought the farm and mansionhouse of Deuchar and latterly his home has been there with his son-in-law and daughter Mr and Mrs R. J. W. Grimm. The other daughter is Mrs N. J. B. Shepherd, Banff.
There was to have been a funeral service in Menmuir Church on Saturday, but the cortege from Deuchar was stopped by piled up snow at Shandford, and the funeral had to be postponed until Sunday.

In Feb 1924, the family ages should have been:
Thomas Spalding - 58 years. Note Thomas was a miner.
Christina Spalding - 51 years
Jane (Jean) Spalding - 20 years
Peter Spalding - 18 years
Thomas Spalding jr - 13 years
