Alexander had gone into a partnership with a Mr. Morcom under the business name 'Alexander Muir & Morcom' - Printers, Lithographers and Stationers - Queen Street, Brisbane and Rockhampton.  By 1895 he had bought Mr. Morcom out and it would appear that his brother Thomas then worked with him and possibly also Thomas's son, Lex.  The business appears to have been quite successful.  Alexander seems to have been quite active in the community and often wrote letters to the newspaper.

In 1906 Alexander lived in Brisbane.

A SUCCESSFUL TASMANIAN
UNIVERSITY STUDENT.
Mr Cecil Napier Ross, son of Mr. Hector Ross, Sheriff of the High Court, Hobart, has returned home for the vacation, after a year's successful course at the Melbourne University. He graduated as B.Sc. at the Tasmanian University, after a brilliant course, winning first-class credits in eight subjects. He then entered for a Scholarship in Melbourne University, and it is evidence of his sound training at the Tasmanian University, that in Melbourne he has come out on top in engineering. The scholarship he entered for at Trinity College (Melbourne University) was in applied mechanics, the amount being 50 pounds for one year, renewable on satisfactory progress, and which has been renewed under very creditable conditions. He has also won an exhibition of 30 pounds at the same University in competition with students in the third year of the mining course course. Mr. Ross intends to spend most of his vacation among the tin mines of the North-West Coast.

OBITUARY.
Mr. Matthew Muir.
The many friends of Mr. Matthew Muir, of Koscuisko, "Windermere-road", Hamilton, will learn with sincere regret of his very sudden death, which occurred at an early hour this morning. Mr. Muir, who was a director in the firm of McWhirters' Ltd., Valley, had for many years taken an active part in the management of that huge establishment, and had married the eldest daughter of Mr. McWhirter, the founder of the firm. He had a splendid capacity for business, and his genial, sincere manner gained for him many firm friends. Yesterday he appeared to be in his usual good health, and when with some friends at night gave no indication of being ill. About midnight an attack came upon him, and at 2.30 this morning he succumbed to heart trouble. The deceased, who was of middle age, was an elder of the Ann-street Presbyterian Church. He had for a great number of years taken a deep interest in the welfare of the church, and had fought hard on behalf of the late Dr. Frackelton during the period of persecution through which that esteemed divine passed several years ago. When expressing regret at the loss which would accrue to many through his untimely death, a friend of the deceased said this morning: "Matthew Muir was a man who never changed: he was always true as steel, and loyal to his friends: it will indeed be hard to replace him." The funeral will leave the late residence of the deceased to morrow morning at 10, proceeding first to tho Ann-street Presbyterian Church, where a brief service will be held, and thence to the South Brisbane Cemetery, where the remains will be Interred beside those of his late mother.

The Week (Brisbane) - Friday 6 April 1917, P28
MR. M. MUIR.
Particulars concerning the sudden death of Mr. Matthew Muir,. show that the deceased gentleman passed away at 2.30,a.m., March 28. after having spent last evening happily with his relatives apparently in good health, and with every promise of many years of life before him. Dr. Morgan was called in, and attributed death to heart failure. The late Mr. M. Muir was 51 years of age. He spent his early life at Gympie, his parents having been attracted there by the discovery of the goldfields. Afterwards he returned to Brisbane, and was in business in Nundah, before, joining the firm of McWhirter's, Limited, -as one of its directors. The deceased gentleman leaves, a widow the eldest daughter; of Mr. James McWhirtet sen. and two boys and a girl. One ot the boys is only a baby, three months old. Mr. Alec. Muir, and Mrs. M. Findlay are brother and . sister of the deceased.

In this marriage registration, John gives his father as William Govan and his mother as Mary Wilson.  Mary Wilson was John's grandmother?  Is it possible that as his mother died when he was 8, he was brought up by his grandmother and step mother, Catherine, he could have forgotten his mother's name.  His age and occupation align.
