It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ron on May 21, 2019 at the age of 86. Ron has now joined his soulmate Joyce (Couston) who passed away in April 2015.
They are now together forever.Left with so many wonderful family memories are his son Christopher (Sally) and his daughter Lisa (Alain). Grandpa’s love and sense of humour will forever bring smiles to Jennifer (Anthony), Shane, Robbie and Patrick. Brooklynn will smile when she hears the amazing stories of her great-grandpa. Cheers Dad! Ron will also be missed by many relatives as well as friends here and in Bradenton Florida.

LARKHALL AND THE WAR
The following casualties etc., have been notified during the week:-
Mr and Mrs Thomas Craig, 122 Wellgate Street, have been notified from the War Office that their son, Pte JOHN CRAIG, 7th Cameron Highlanders, was killed in action on the 25th September. He enlisted last November and went with the battalion to France in July. Pte CRAIG was the second son of the family, was 20 years of age, and was employed in Home Farm Colliery.Mr and Mrs James Spalding, 159 Raploch Street, have been notified that their son, Pte JAMES SPALDING, 7th Cameron Highlanders, was killed in action in France on the 25th September. He enlisted in November last and went with the battalion to France in July. He was 18 years of age and was employed previous to enlisting at Bog Colliery.
Note: James was James and Euphemis' grandson not son.
It is a coincidence that Ptes. CRAIG and SPALDING were companions in civil life. They both enlisted together, were killed on the same day, and are laid side by side on the Continent.

District of Hamilton Lanark. Thomas Spalding was born 15th March 1871 at 2 Blackwell Road, Hamilton. Father was William Spalding, Carter working, mother - Ann Spalding m.s. McDonald, parents were married 31 December 1864 (sic) at Hamilton. Informant: William Spalding, Father.Thomas arrived in Sydney from Glasgow on the Stirlingshire on 16 February 1884. The passenger entry records give his religion as UP, Native Place or County as Lanark with no relations in the Colony. He was listed as a Scholar aged 13. The shipping list shows the three boys, William aged 17, Peter aged 15 and Thomas aged 13, listed separately from their parents and young sisters Annie and Jane, and baby John. The boys may have been quartered with the other single men.
He was a witness at brother William Spalding's wedding to Maria Carr in 1890.
Thomas Spalding and Maria Bowman were married on 4 April 1893 as identified in their first child (Ellen's) birth registration.

According to verbal family history - by 1895 Thomas was manager of a gold mine in Gympie Qld. He offered his brother William a job at the mine during a labour strike in Sydney. William worked for a short time at the engineering firm of Walkers Ltd. Maryborough. It is unknown if this was where Thomas was working. Thomas' sister Ann Spalding was also in Queensland at this time and she married there.
Thomas' first wife Maria Spalding died in Gympie on 13 February 1899.

In the 1905 Queensland Electoral Roll of Wide Bay, Monkland, Thomas Anderson Spalding lived at Brisbane Road, an engineer together with his wife Catherine Spalding, domestic duties.
Thomas' second wife Katie Spalding died in Gympie on 18 December 1907 from child birth of their son Thomas Joseph Spalding who also died on that day.
A postcard sent from Thomas' family to Sydney had the address 'Scottish Mine, Monkland'. The Monkland mining area was within walking distance of Gympie - The Scottish Mine was backed by money raised mainly from Scotsmen and was one of the most productive gold mines in the Gympie area - from 'Gympie Gold' by Hector Holthouse.

"AN ELECTRICIAN FOUND DROWNED.
GYMPIE, January 23.
Another drowning accident took place at 2 o'clock this morning in the dam at the Scottish Gympie Company. James Galbraith, the electrician at the mine, who was appointed three months ago, left work for his home at 2 o'clock. His clothes were found at 6 o'clock on the bank by Mr. Spalding, chief engineer of the mine, and were identified as Galbraith's. The police were advised, and a search was made, the body being found at 9 o'clock. Galbraith recently arrived from Newcastle, England, and it is understood his wife and child are now on their way to Australia. While Mr T A Spalding, engineer at the Scottish Gympie Gold Mines was driving Mr J Harris, mine manager, to town on Thursday afternoon the tyre of the motor car either came off or blew out in turning the corner of John street and Crescent road and the car ran into a post. Mr Harris was flung against the glass shade, which was shattered, and he received a nasty cut over the right eye. Mining Enquiry - Scottish Gympie Accident
...On Wednesday, the following evidence was given : —
Thomas A. Spalding, engineer at the Scottish Gympie Gold Mines, deposed that he had been in the employ of the company for 22 years and was in full charge of the machinery ; the engine drivers were directly under his supervision. He was the person appointed by the manager for the examination of the rope, gear and machinery.
...In the 1919 Queensland Electoral Roll of Lilley, Gympie, Thomas Anderson Spalding lived at Brisbane Road, an engineer with his daughter Marie Spalding, home duties.

...the Scottish Gympie Gold Mine was visited by the visitors and Gympie League officials. The party were shown over the surface workings of the mine by L. Birt (accountant) and Mr. T.A. Spalding (engineer).The Qld. Post Office Directories shows Thomas living at Brisbane Road, Monkland, Gympie until sometime in 1924 - he does not appear after that and it would appear that he left Queensland at that time. Almost all mining on the Gympie Goldfield ceased in 1923.
According to Helen Nash - Tom married a catholic girl who was related to Cardinal Duhig of Brisbane. They had a daughter who became a nun. If this is correct it would probably be Katies' daughter Ellen Mary Spalding. Tom also went to World War 1. Helen thought Thomas was married three times and had three children.
Katie Whelan, Thomas' second wife, was the 1st cousin of Archbishop James Duhig of Brisbane from 1917. Their common ancestors are Garrett Barry and Margaret Gallagher. Katie's mother was Ellen Barry, the sister of Margaret Barry, Archbishop James Duhig's mother. Archbishop James Duhig is the founder of Lourdes Hill College in 1916. The first students at the College were boarders, Ellen Mary Spalding (Ella) being the first to arrive in January 1916. Ella was Katherine's only daughter. James Duhig was the titular Archbishop of Amida and coadjutor to Archbishop Dunne in 1912, whom he succeeded as Archbishop of Brisbane in 1917.

He died at Darlinghurst on 22 October 1926 aged 55. He was an engineer and left an estate of 125 pounds to Margaret Spalding. He lived at "Paisley" Parramatta Road, Homebush. Albert Alfred Crow was executor and Carl Lawrence viewed the body.

G. D. Buchanan. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr. A. Burgess, wore a handsome white corded silk gown, ornamented with orange blossoms, ohiffon, and lace, and arranged with court train. The bridal veil, which was composed of tulle, was artistically embroidered in silk. There were six bridesmaids. She principal bridesmaids were Misses Lizzie and Lillie Findlay, and Miss Myra Muir. All the bridfesmaids wore very smart and becoming frocks. Mr. Thomas Muir officiated as best man. Mrs. Findlay, mother of the bridegroom, wore black silk, ornamented with heliotrope, black lace, and. jet. Mrs. J. Scott, black satin, brightened with fine jets, and accompanied by a cream lace collarette. Mrs. Alex. Muir, gray, with black lace. Mrs. Russell, gas-green gown. Mrs. Shanks, heliotrope and black lace. Miss Spalding, Sydney, white silk, with white silk ribbon. The presents were numerous and handsome. The bride and bridegroom left for Southport, where they purpose spending their honeymoon.
