Death: NSW BDM 20990/1964  SWADLING  WILLIAM THOMAS  EDWARD  MARY ANN  BURWOOD

William Thomas Swadling (1882-1964), trade unionist, was born on 5 October 1882 in Sydney, sixth child of Edward Swadling, native-born publican, and his Welsh wife Mary Ann, née Davis. He was a sailor when he married Margaret Elizabeth Wright (d.1919) on 12 December 1906 at St Paul's Anglican Church, Sydney; they were to have five children. After the birth of his second child in 1909, Swadling left the sea and lived at Balmain. He was employed by the Sydney Harbour Trust and did general labouring (1913) before working on the docks.

Elected vice-president of the Ship Painters and Dockers' Union of Port Jackson in 1915, Swadling was soon recognized as a diplomatic negotiator in waterfront demarcation disputes. In 1916 he was a trade union delegate to the Naval Dockyards Demarcations Board. Having enlisted as a private in the Australian Imperial Force on 20 February, he embarked for England in August. Blue-eyed and brown-haired, he was 5 ft 5 ins (165 cm) tall. In December 1917 he was posted to the Australian Army Medical Corps Details and on 6 February 1918 to the Australian Base Depot Staff in France.

Returning home a widower in September 1919, Swadling was elected State president in 1921 (vice-president in 1923, 1929 and 1931) of the Federated Ship Painters and Dockers' Union of Australia. He regularly represented the union on the Labor Council of New South Wales and at Labor Party conferences. Lobbying on a range of industrial and political issues, he favoured union amalgamations to solve demarcation problems and work rationing to remedy unemployment during trade recessions. In 1922 he condemned Labor's expulsion of Communist Party members. At Labor conferences he identified his union with the support of widows' benefits, motherhood endowments and the 'Hands off China Policy'. On 7 February 1923 he married a widow Margaret Camarsh, née Spalding, at Balmain.

After the death of John McDonald, in 1933 Swadling became secretary of the F.S.P.D.U., the sole salaried official in the State branch. His office was in the Union Hall, Mort Street, Balmain, where the Federal secretary was also located. During the Depression Swadling coped with lean times and the inability of members to pay their dues. In 1937 he reported that financial membership had fallen from 1500 to 700. By the outbreak of World War II numbers had begun to increase; in 1940 'Old Bill' received his first rise to Ð6 10s. and in 1943 he was paid Ð10 per week.

The war brought comparative prosperity to Swadling and to his members, about half of whom—according to Justice Sir George Beeby—had been paid 'a long way below the basic wage' in 1939. Swadling encouraged campaigns for better hiring practices for the largely casual ship-painter and docker workforce. Occasionally in conflict with his colleagues, he retired as branch secretary in 1944, but continued as a Federal councillor.

On 16 April 1964 Swadling died in Concord Repatriation General Hospital and was cremated with Anglican rites. Three sons and two daughters of his first marriage and a son of his second survived him.

Death: Died 22 February 1949 at sea. Died when the coastal steamer "Bombo", sank off Wollongong.

SS Bombo
The twenty second day of February 1949 had been a typical late summer's day on the NSW South Coast. At about 3 o'clock a southerly buster had passed the Wollongong area and the sea conditions had dramatically changed for the worse. Since then the ship had battled the deteriorating seas, first in an attempt to reach Sydney and then in a battle to make the safety of Port Kembla. By 10.00 pm it was only four kilometres away from safety when suddenly the list on the ship worsened. Within minutes the ship had "turned turtle" and sank, taking four crew to their immediate death. So were the last minutes of the SS Bombo.

The NSW Government owned State Metal Quarries at Bombo, just north of Kiama on the New South Wales South Coast utilised the services of a number of vessels for transporting blue metal from the quarry to Sydney. These included the SS Kiama, SS Helen Nichol, SS White Bay and SS Boambee. In the late 1920s, State Metal Quarries placed an order for a new vessel with H. Robb at Leith, Scotland.

In late 1929 the 540 ton and 46 metre SS Bombo was launched and on 11 February 1930 she departed for Sydney under the command of Captain Manning. Since 1924, Captain Manning had brought six new ships out to Australia. The Bombo ran into heavy seas in the English Channel. The seas were said to be so rough that the crew could not get to the forecastle and had to spend one night in the messroom. The ship sailed via Port Said and Aden and arrived in Sydney via the Torres Strait on 23 April 1930.

Although five days early, the ship was said to have been critically short of supplies when it arrived. The Bombo commenced service transporting blue metal from the Bombo Quarry between Kiama and Sydney almost straight away under the command of Captain Arthur Bell, former skipper of the SS Kiama. In December 1935, together with the assets of State Metal Quarries, she was sold to Quarries Pty Ltd. The ship was averaging about five trips a week on the voyage.

On 22 February 1941, the Bombo was requisitioned by the Royal Australian Navy and on 28 May 1941 commissioned as HMAS Bombo (designation BB), an auxiliary minesweeper. Two Oerlikon heavy machine guns, a 12 pound gun were installed and four depth charges carried at the stern. The 12 pounder was mounted on a bandstand on the foredeck. She apparently served between Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart until May 1944 (also reported November 1943) and it is reported she was converted into a stores carrier on 27 June 1944. She was reported to have left Sydney in February 1944 and spent the next 18 months in Darwin and the Northern Australian area.

HMAS Bombo provided yeoman service taking equipment and stores to the remote Anjo Peninsula in WA. These were used to help construct Truscott Airfield which was opened in May 1944. This supports that she was removed from the Sydney, Melbourne. Hobart run in November 1943 and left Sydney in February 1944.

During 1944 and possibly part of 1943, it appears she was in Darwin a fair bit.

She was reported to have been used towing targets outside Darwin Harbour and may have visited the islands of New Year, West Montalivet, Peron and North Goulburn. On 7 September 1945 she was at Thursday Island off the tip of Cape York, the northern-most part of Australia. On 11 September 1945 the Bombo was part of a force that occupied Koepand, East Timor. This was led by HMAS Moresby.

In late November 1945 the Bombo sailed from Darwin to Sydney. The Bombo was paid off on 25 February 1946, returning to its owners on 25 July 1947.

The Bombo's regular skipper, Captain Arthur Bell once again took control of her on the run from Kiama to Sydney. In September 1947 Captain Bell brought the SS Bombo into Kiama for the first time since February 1941. On 29 December 1948, the Bombo grounded on the Kiama bar, suffering some damage. It was quickly repaired and returned to work by mid-January.

At 11.55 am on 22 February 1949, the Bombo left Kiama for Sydney with 650 tons of metal aboard. Among the 14 crew was one Thorvald Thomsen who almost 30 years earlier had survived the wreck of the SS Tuggerah and was lucky to be absent ill when the SS Myola sank a few weeks earlier than the Tuggerah. Just off Port Kembla, a southerly change had hit the vessel turning a pleasant day into a nightmare. At 4.00 pm when north of Stanwell Park, a huge wave went right over the ship causing a list to port as the cargo shifted.

Captain Bell decided to make a run for Port Kembla Harbour where the Bombo could shelter while the blue metal was retrimmed. At 5.00 pm a message was sent to the coastal radio station at La Perouse that the Bombo had turned around. When only four kilometres from safety, the ship sank.

Ten men escaped from the ship, the other four going down with the wreck. Thomsen was one of the survivors clinging to two planks. Two crew decided to swim to shore but they never made it. At dawn, Captain Bell and another crew member were dead, six still hanging on to the planks. The land was sighted and the remaining survivors decided to set out at 15 minute intervals for the shore.

At 10.00 am, Thomsen was dragged ashore by a beach inspector at Bulli Beach while Michael Fitzsimmons, the fireman, came ashore at Woonona Beach. Two RAAF Catalinas were brought into the search but no more survivors were found. Only two bodies were recovered. Captain Bell's body was recovered by the Wollongong trawler, Pacific Pearl skippered by Captain A. Barnet. The body of Charles Barhen was also found. Of the crew of 14, 12 died that day. Dead were:

Captain Arthur Robert P. Bell - Skipper
Percy J. Carroll - Chief Engineer
Henry Stringer - First Mate
Charles Barhen - Able Seaman
W. J. Cunningham - Able Seaman
John Stevenson - Second Engineer
Edward Nagle - Donkeyman
Ernest Norris - Fireman
Thomas Belvoir - ?
Arthur Lightburn - Cook
G. Riddell - Seaman
Laurence Lucey - Able Seaman

A dog, believed to be the ship's dog, was found on Bulli Beach covered in grease and sand. Thomsen and Fitzsimmons were of the view that the ship sank because the load of blue metal shifted.

When the Bombo sank, a great deal of its cargo of blue metal dropped out of the holds and fell to the sea floor. This pile of metal is now located about 50 metres to the east of the wreck. As the ship went down it ploughed into the sandy bottom bow first. This caused some damage to the bow area. Soon after, the bridge hit the bottom and then the great weight and momentum caused the ship's back to break and the Bombo buckled right across the hull almost in the middle of the ship. At the same time the weight squashed the bridge beyond identification. As she sank, some pieces fell and ended up on the sand next to the remains of the ship. This includes a hopper used to load coal/gravel and parts of the masts. Lying roughly north-south, the Bombo was now in water 32 metres deep and upside down almost in the middle of the shipping channel.

The wreck lay undiscovered by divers until 1978.

NSW Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages, 1892/904, Francis Sylva born 17 February 1892 at 24 Church Street Pyrmont. Father: Joseph Sylva 40 years, born in Portugal. Mother: Mary Ann Walsh 37 years, born at Jamberoo. Witness: Mrs Lyal.
Registered 6 April 1892 - Informant, M A Sylva, 24 Church Street, Pyrmont.

Marriage: NSW BDM 2244/1926  SYLVA  FRANK  SPALDING  ELSIE M E  BALMAIN SOUTH

At the time of Frank's marriage to Elsie Spalding in 1926 Frank was working as a Baker and was living at 209 Liverpool Road, Ashfield.

In the NSW 1930 Electoral Roll of Parkes, Ashfield West, at 137 Norton Street lived Frank Sylva, carter, and Elsie May Sylva, home duties.  Frank's mother Mary Ann Sylva lived at 77 Carshalton Street, Croydon, doing home duties.

In the NSW 1930 Electoral Roll of Eden Monaro, Albion Park, at Jamberoo lived Frank Sylva, labourer, Elsie May Elizabeth Sylva, home duties, and Mary Ann Sylva also doing home duties.

In the NSW 1936 Electoral Roll of Eden Monaro, Kiama, at Jamberoo lived Frank Sylva, labourer, and Elsie May Sylva, home duties.

During the Depression, Frank lost his job and went down the coast looking for work. The fact that his cousins the Walshes had farms around Jamberoo may have influenced him to go there. He got a job with two ladies, the Misses Kinross, to manage their property. A house was available so he sent for his wife Elsie and child Valerie who was about a year old.

About 10 years later the family had to leave when Miss Kinross could no longer afford Frank's one pound a week wage. They moved to Kiama where Frank worked in a quarry and later for the Mains Road Board.

Frank died 26 May 1959 and is buried with his wife Elsie (who died 29 December 1961) at the field of Mars Cemetery Ryde.

577. Valerie Heather Spalding SYLVA

Valerie initially worked at the Kiama District Hospital and travelled with show horses. After her parents died, she entered the Presbyterian Deaconess training college at Glebe in 1966, and graduated in 1968. Bathurst was her first appointment and she was Commissioned there in 1969.

In September 1970, Valerie had a serious car accident on the Mountains while on the way from Bathurst to Blackheath to take the Church service.  The accident damaged her right leg and hip, and in 1973, she had a hip replacement. She lived in Bathurst and did supply preaching in various places.

After the Church Union came in 1977, she went to Orange to help the Presbyterian people restart the parish. The main church building and most of the congregation had passed to the Uniting church.  While in Orange, she commenced studies for the Ministry, three years extra to Deaconess Studies.

South Australia needed Presbyterian Ministers as a number had gone into the Uniting Church, so when she had finished her studies, Valerie went to Adelaide in 1980 as a three-year appointment. She still had theses to write and that is why she was ordained in South Australia, instead of NSW.

Valerie Heather Spalding Sylva was ordained on 16 October 1980 into the Presbyterian Church of Australia in South Australia. She returned to NSW in 1982 and was inducted on 29 October 1982 to St Andrew's Gladesville-Hunters Hill Church. Her hip required further surgery in 1985, which was not successful and caused her to demit the Charge of Gladesville-Hunters Hill in 1985.  She resigned from the Gladesville - Hunter Hill parish on 14 July 1985.

During April to July 1986, she drove around Australia in a Ford Laser car.

In 1991, Valerie moved from Bathurst to Streaky Bay on the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia to live in retirement. However, Whyalla, on the east coast of the Peninsula needed a minister so she supplied there travelling over each fortnight in her Campervan. She travelled over 700,000 km.

By 1996, her hip needed surgery again. This required bone grafting and techniques that necessitated going to Royal Adelaide Hospital. As Streaky Bay was so remote, she bought a house in Whyalla and moved there.

There was a long delay before she could get into Adelaide Hospital and it was not until 1999 that she had the last surgery, which was very successful.

Valerie considered she belonged to NSW and had always intended to return. She investigated the possibility of retirement villages on the coast when she saw that private houses were beyond her means. But she could not sell her house at Whyalla, and retirement villages were also too costly.  She then thought of Broken Hill, just across the border, and there she landed in 2003. She had a typical Broken Hill house of corrugated iron and considered that heat is the most unpleasant aspect of the area, but it is a unique and interesting city. She always had a garden wherever she was, but the salinity of the water in Broken Hill made that a frustrating place in which to grow anything.

Six months after moving to Broken Hill, she lost her companion of 18 years, her little tortoiseshell cat, Penny, who was a much-travelled cat.

She did not regret her experience of Broken Hill, but her ideal was to have a house with a garden on the far south coast of NSW. Time ran out and she thought that that might not be on the Lord's agenda for her. She did not lose hope as she knew the Lord had always been gracious to her.

Local Gladesville Press - 27 October 1982
A Parish of her own makes Valerie different
The life of a country girl with a passion for horses took a very different turn when Valerie Sylva felt her vocation. Miss Sylva was inducted last week into her position as minister of the Gladesville-Hunters Hill Parish of the Presbyterian Church.

There are only two other women ordained ministers in the church in NSW, Rev Joy Bartholomew, wife of a minister and herself chaplain at the University of Newcastle, and Rev Margaret Yee, who is studying in England. But Rev Sylva is the only one with a parish and a church of her own. In fact she has two churches, St Andrew at Gladesville and the Presbyterian Church at Woolwich.

On Sunday, she will have two morning services to conduct, one at 9 am at the Church of St Andrew and again at 10.30 am in the Church at Woolwich. She expects that much of her pastoral work will involve visiting within the parish in hospitals, nursing homes and private residences, teaching scripture in schools, and marriages, baptisms and funerals.

Fraternal meetings
And of course there will be the regular ministers' fraternal meetings attended by parish priests and ministers of the different churches in the district. Rev Val Sylva will be the only woman, but she doesn't expect that to make any difference. Miss Sylva is used to doing work equal to that of any man both in the church and outside it.

She grew up on the south coast around the Kiama district. Her first job after leaving school without completing her Higher School Certificate was as a nurse's aide in the hospital. This work left her free to prepare her horse for the agricultural show circuit culminating in the Royal Easter Show in Sydney. She rode successfully in hunting and hacking classes, showing both her own horse and others in the team she travelled with.

"The girls in the team used to ride the men's horses in the ladies' classes at the shows. But we were always expected to do our own share of the heavy work - carrying buckets of water and so on," Miss Sylva recalls. But faith had always been a part of Valerie Sylva's life and she went to church regularly.

It was after the death of both of her parents in 1961 when the local parish minister asked if she had ever thought of going into the church that Miss Sylva's new career began. She had to catch up on her education first to qualify to study at the Presbyterian Deaconess College. After graduating she was sent to assist the Presbyterian Minister at Bathurst.

It was during this time that she suffered a serious car accident when she was on her way to Blackheath to take a service. On turning a bend her car was hit by a vehicle with a drunken driver travelling on the wrong side of the road. Three years later she underwent surgery for a total hip replacement operation.

It was in 1978 that Miss Sylva began her training as a minister. The three-year course included a year at Armidale University and the writing of two major theses. After her ordination Rev Sylva worked with the team ministry in Adelaide where she became aware of the problems of life in an industrial satellite town.
