Catherine Hill Bay. - A warrant has been issued by the Catherine Hill Bay Bench for the arrest of WILLIAM THOMAS RAYMOND SPALDING, charged with disobeying a magisterial order for the support of his child (13 pounds 10s and 8S costs due). He is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, thin build, medium complexion, brown hair, clean shaved, usually well dressed in dark clothes, a milk carter or labourer. The Newcastle Sun - Thursday 24 October 1940
Spalding v. Spalding
Her husband hated their baby and wanted to shoot it. Their married life lasted only 12 months, said Mrs. Mary Spalding (formerly Davies) of Catherine Hill Bay, who sought a divorce from William Thomas Raymond Spalding on the ground of constructive desertion. She was married, Mrs. Spalding said, on August 22, 1925, at the Methodist Church, Catherine Hill Bay.
There was one child, a girl aged 13 years.
Mrs. Spalding said that her married life lasted 12 months. They parted in September 1926.
He treated her all right up to the time her baby was born. Then one day he told her to get the baby out of the house. He seemed to be jealous of it. It started to cry and he hit it knocking it out of her arms. On an other occasion he picked up a rifle and said he would shoot the child. She grabbed the gun and it broke in halves.
She had to get police protection. He also said he would shoot himself and she would be to blame. He wanted her to put the baby in a home, but she refused. He even made arrangements for It to go into an institution. She left him because she was afraid for herself and the child. Spalding had not paid her a penny for 13 years. She had had to earn her own living.A decree nisi was granted.
He was reported as alive in about 1946.
In his mother's death notice in 1976 it refers to son Tom (deceased).
The Davies moved from Plattsburg, Wallsend to Catherine Hill Bay when Mary Davies was about 5 years old.
