William Scott was a Mason as listed in his sons William's and John's birth records.
Most of the Scott family belonged to Bellshill Relief Church, a dissenting church which objected to the “Law of Patronage” where the aristocracy appointed the minister. In Bellshill the objection had arisen from the sole nominee being presented by the Tutors and the Factor of the Duke of Hamilton who was a child at the time. The name Relief Church was chosen to mean relief from this patronage. They wanted to “judge for themselves” when choosing their minister.
The Scott family had been associated with the church since it broke away from Bothwell Parish in 1762. William Scott (1698) was one of the 50 signatories of the original agreement to set up the church. They built the church themselves in 1763 and it is likely that as a mason William would have been involved in its construction. Initially the congregation had worshipped and baptised their children in the open air like the Covenanters before them.
