William should have been born a Quaker however his marriage takes place in the Established Church at Bolton by Bolland 17th June 1708 when he married Ann Caley of Docber. Of course the obvious question is why is it not a Quaker marriage? The answer is not that obvious. Perhaps Ann was not a Quaker at marriage but looking at her surname she ought to have had Quaker connections as there are persons named Caley at Edge End who are Quaker.

Perhaps Caley were like Tipping and a family who were not always Quaker. Up until 1754 any marriage that was not in the Established Church was not a legal one.  Perhaps they both wanted to be legally married but this would have been against Quaker practice to enter an Anglican Church and do this.

However William is buried as a Quaker and so is Ann.
