John WOOD

John and Sarah lived at Bolton, Lancashire. They were living in 1813 in Manchester. They were Quakers but appear to have left membership after 1813.

John was born 20th Jan 1781 presumably Bolton. He didn't follow his father into the business.  It is possible he was idle or just had no business acumen whatsoever.

John married fellow Quaker Sarah Tipping daughter of William and Ann Tipping of Docber Sawley on 26th June 1804.  At the time this was in West Yorkshire but now is in Lancashire. One description of him at marriage was that of estate agent. However accounts go on to describe him as cotton spinner, cotton twister, book keeper, an accountant, auctioneer and at one point he was dealing with mustard seeds.  John worked was a Mustard manufacturer in Bolton, Lancashire. He worked as a Cotton twist dealer, Cotton spinner and Accountant before 1813 in Bolton, Lancashire. He worked as an Auctioneer and Accountant after 1813 in Manchester. None of these jobs ever seemed to yield money, success or indeed any mustard.
At death he was a failed farmer with 10 acres. In fact he had a very unsuccessful working life and it said that he failed to secure any futures for his children by ensuring that they could earn a living by way of a good trade or by imparting any business skills to them. The result is that the children apparently struggled somewhat.

On the death of his father in 1804 John his son remarked that he didn't fancy having to keep his sisters. The irony was that he relied upon Jacob Bright, his brother-in-law, to send him money along with his sister Margaret.  John seemed to become more impoverished as time went on and became more and more requesting of money.  Margaret his sister couldn't understand why he had a failing farm as she thought it should pay its way and she had a business head.  John also had to tackle his brother-in-law, John Tipping, regarding the non payment of the inheritance of his children and he looks like he probably  got nowhere.  Out of all the children of William Tipping born 1746 this family was the one along with the Bancroft's that  may have felt the most benefit from an inheritance assuming John would have done something constructive with it.

It is thought by some that because John and Sarah disappear from view after 1817 that they abandoned their Quaker faith but nothing could be further from the truth and in fact the reason why they disappear is they all went off to America. It is not quite certain what was making John Wood disillusioned with life apart from the usual gripes down the ages of no work, no money the government etc.  When exactly they departed is not known  but it must be between the birth of Edward and the death of Sarah in Rockley Delaware on 26th May 1819. The rest of the family were admitted to the Quaker, New Garden Monthly Meeting in Philadelphia on 10 May 1821.  It is written that John's own parents had contemplated the move to America but had not done anything about it and may have been influenced by the American War of Independence.

It was John's sister Margaret who had to shell out money for the Wood family to get to America and afterwards she herself says that her money was exported to America along with that of Jacob Bright. John Wood had apparently, prior to departure, assured the family that he was going into the auctioneering business in America and the family felt a little easier as this, although his track record was not good.

However despite assurances he set up yet another failed cotton spinning business, much to the ire of Margaret who was then working a post office. Margaret thought him unsuited to this work.  Although she doesn't say it outright he may have been too intolerant of others views and, reading between the lines not be in possession of any customer skills.

Sarah died 30th May 1819 in Wilmington Delaware and was buried FBG Wilmington. Obituary notices appeared in July 1819 in the Lancaster Gazette and Liverpool Mercury noting the passing of Sarah in Delaware aged 38 formerly of Manchester.

After the death of Sarah John wasted little time and remarried to the said English born (1797) Hannah Taylor in 1820 with whom he had more children: Samuel 1821-1899, Margaret 1822-1890, Clement 1824-1895 and Jane.

Margaret was described by Margaret Wood her aunt as a child of her hapless brother.  Hannah died 3th Feb and was buried 1882 West Laurel Hill Cemetery Montgomery County PA.

John died 2nd March 1849 in Roxburgh PA a failed farmer and was buried Germantown Quaker cemetery.

Public Ledger - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania  Sat 3 Mar 1849, P2
On the 2nd inst., JOHN WOOD, in the 69th year of his age.  Funeral on Wednesday next, 7th inst., from his late residence, Roxborough, then to Germantown.

Frances was educated Ackworth and married William Holmes of Liverpool, the assumption is she was a Quaker, which is borne out by the fact that their children, Sarah Ann born 1820, William Curwen b1818 and John Sydney b1815 all attended Acworth School but are given in the registers as having their abode as Docber.  Frances is said to have died 13th Feb 1843 in Liverpool. The births of the children are recorded at Marsden and there could be double recordings of some Quaker births in general i.e. where they were actually born and again in places where they had family associations. John Sydney is recorded twice once at Marsden and again at Lancashire i.e. Liverpool? Each with a different reference number.
