In 1886 James Watson and his wife Davina, and their two children moved to Joadja Creek in the southern highlands of New South Wales, Australia.
They departed England on the "Lusitania" on 13 May 1886. Just after arriving in Sydney on 1 July 1886 James obtained a free railway pass to Joadja Creek. The entry reads:
Jas Watson, aged 32, married from Scotland on 5 July 1886 to Joadja Creek, wife, 2 Chn, read & write, 4 days in col, per "Lusitania".Marriage Vic BDM: WATSON Janet to BROWN, Robt 1897 998/1897
Janet was last mentioned in the memorial notice to her father in 1939. As she was not mentioned in her sister Bethia's death notice of 1963 (as her living sisters were) it could be assumed that Janet was deceased by 1963. Similarly as the nephew and niece were referenced who can be identified as the children of Jane Thorpe (nee Watson) it can also be assumed that these are the only surviving nephews and neices. Thus Janet is unlikely to have had children.

According to the birth registration, William's mother is Janet Fleming. As shown in the 1881 census Janet Fleming is the mother of Mary Fleming, aged 27, and William Fleming, aged 2. It was common in that period for the grandparents to claim an illegitimate child as their own. It is feasible that Mary Fleming was the mother and Alexander Watson was the father in accordance with the parternity claim below. In the 1891 census William is then described as Janet's grandson.
