DEATH OF OF JOHN GAHAN.
One of the oldest municipal councillors and commissioners of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works, Councillor John Gahan, died at his residence, "Langi Koort," Ivanhoe, on Saturday. Councillor Gahan was born in London in 1851, and came to Victoria with his parents in 1854.
On leaving school he was employed for some years in a tobacco factory, and then joined his father in business as a contractor. In 1875 he carried on the business on his own account until 1900, when he established himself as a house and land agent in Victoria-street, Collingwood, and conducted his business there until his death. In 1887 he was elected us a member of the Collingwood Council, representing Victoria Ward, and at the time of his death was the oldest member of the council. He was mayor of Collingwood three times.
Councillor Gahan had represented Collingwood as a commissioner of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works since March 1, 1892, and was for many years vice-chairman. With the exception of Councillor E. A. Atkyns, of Kew, he was the oldest member ot the boaid. He also represented the municipalities on the Gas Conference. He was an active member of whatever organisation he belonged to, and was one of the originators of the Melbourne swimming baths, and of the first free library. Councillor Gahan, on one occasion, sought to enter Parliament, and unsuccessfully opposed Mr. Tudor, M.H.R., for the Yarra seat in the House of Representatives at the first Federal elections on March 29, 1901. Mr. Gahan was also a prominent member of the M.U.I.O.O.F., and a past master in the Masonic order. He was closely associated with St. Phillip's Church of England, Collingwood, and was a lay reader of the Church of England. The funeral at the Boroondara Cemetery yesterday was largely attended. It was preceded by a short service at St. Phillip's Church, conducted by the vicar, the Rev. L. L. Wenzel. The pall-bearers were the Mayor of Collingwood (Councillor P. J. McNamara), the town clerk (Mr. W. R. Butcher; and Messrs. Membrey, M.L.A., G. A. Gibbs (secretary to the Metropolitan Board of Works), G. Baird, P. Hamilton, A. Crane, W. D. Hoyle, and Councillor Shillabeer. The Rev. L. L. Wenzel read the burial service, which was followed by a masonic service read by Brother J. Anderson (Earl of Carnarvon Lodge).

As of yet not able to locate a baptisimal record but wedding details clearly indicate that Annie was the child of John Gahan and Anstey MacCarthy born about 1853 in London.
Marriage: Annie Gahan
Spouse Name: William Browning
Marriage Place: Victoria
Registration Place: Victoria
Registration Year: 1874
Registration Number: 1228
Annie Gahan, a spinster aged 21 born in London, England and William Browning, a bachelor aged 20 born in Tasmania were married on 11 April 1874 at St Marks Church Fitzroy, Victoria. At the time Annie was living at Collinswood and William was living at Fitzroy. Annie's parents were listed as John Gahan, a plasterer, and Ann McCarty(sic). William's parents were listed as William Browning, a labourer, and Margaret Johnston. Witnesses to the wedding were John Gahan junior and Henry Gahan. (The signature of Henry Gahan is a close match to the Henry Gahan the husband of Maria Hains. It is most likely that Henry was Annie's uncle).Between the years 1879 and 1883/4 Annie and William moved to the Balmain area of Sydney. So did Henry and Maria and their family as well as Annie's younger brother, Edward and his family. Annie & William returned to Victoria 1883/4 and lived in South Melbourne where one morning in May 1884 William killed his wife with an ironing board because she wanted more rum.
John and Anstey Gahan are buried in Melbourne General Cemetery in a single unmarked plot along with their daughter, Annie Browning.
The Argus (Melbourne) - Wednesday 7 May 1874
TUESDAY SOUTH MELBOURNE
MURDER.
Dr Youl yesterduy held an inquest on the body of Ann Browning, for the murder whom on Sunday last her husband William Browning had been arrested. The inquest was to have been held in the Standard Hotel, Moray place, but the courthouse was considered a more convenient and suitable place, and whether the inquest was adjourned. The account of the murder as given at the inquest was similar to that published in The Argus on Monday morning, nothing fresh having been elicited of any importance.
Mr Johnson the Government analyst, was called and deposed that blood stains, which appeared to be human blood stains, were on the articles forwarded to him by the police.
Dr Stirling, who held a post mortem examination of deceased, described the numerous bruises and cuts about the head and body, and said there were two ribs broken and three ruptures of the liver. The cause of death was rupture of the liver from external violence, and the injury to the ribs and liver could have been caused by a severe kick.
William Browning, son of deceased and prisoner, aged about nine years, gave his evidence in a very intelligent manner. According to him, the occupants of the house on Sunday last were his mother and father, his brother and sisters, his grandmother, and himself. Early in the morning the mother wanted some beer, and the father protesting against her having it, a quarrel ensued. The mother called the father names, and ran away, but was followed by the father and conveyed to the bedroom where he kicked her, knocked her down and then beat her on the head and thigh with an ironing board. Then "she went to sleep on the floor." The mother wasn't quite, drunk, but "was drunk a bit".
Leaving the woman on the floor, the man sent one of his girls for beer, after drinking which he went to sleep for an hour. Then he sent for more beer, and sat down to read. When it was about dark, he told the boy to wake his mother up, and ask her if she was going to get the tea. The lad went into the room where his mother was lying on the floor and tried in vain to wake her, and then the father sent for some rum, and put some in her mouth. He undressed her, put a hot brick to her feet, and hot flannels to hcr breast and then, saying, to his son, "Oh, she's dead", went and sat by the fire. Witness said his mother was not able to call out loud because she had a sore throat, and his father choked her the week before. His father had brought in some fire on an iron plate to heat the room.
When his mother and father quarelled they were both usually drunk.
George Marryatt Roles and his wife Annie Roles, who resided next door to prisoner, gave evidence, to hearing prisoner abuse and ill use his wife last Sunday. Their house was shaken by the violence of the jumping of prisoner on his wife. Roles informed the police in the evening, and, with Senior constable Rogers entered prisoner's house where they found the woman dead. Prisoner was then arrested. The woman was very seldom sober, and her husband was a very heavey drinker.
Another neighbour named Taylor heard prisoner beating his wife and heard her moaning. Also heard prisoner say, "I'll kill you, you ..., yet". It was a very common occurrence for prisoner to beat his wife.
Margaret Browning, mother of prisoner, said that deceased was drunk on Sunday morning, and fell several times on the floor, with the baby in her arms. When she was on the floor prisoner struck her two or three times across the back with a board. After beingstruck she got up and sat on a box. She was too tipsy to walk. The witness then went out and did not return till night. (This witness cautioned the coroner against believing all the little boy said).
Senior constable Rogers described the condition of the house when he went there on Sunday evening. The woman was lying on her bed dead. The prisoner was sitting by the fire, quite sober. Part of the floor and some female clothing appeared as if they had been recently washed. The pillow was saturated with blood and there were traces of water, as if an attempt had been made to obliterate the stains. There was some fire on an iron plate on the floor. The jury after a short deliberation, returned a verdict of wilful murder against prisoner, who was committed for trial at the Central Criminal Court on the 15th inst.
William Browning was a plasterer.
Between the years 1879 and 1883/4 Annie and William moved to the Balmain area of Sydney. So did Henry and Mariea and their family as well as Annie younger brother, Edward and his family. Annie & William returned to Victoria 1883/4 and lived in South Melbourne where one morning in May 1884 William killed his wife.

Days of sadness still steal o'er me,
Hidden tears do often flow.
But in memory, Errie, you are with me,
Though you died two years ago.
Inserted by his loving father and mother, William
and Queenie Gahan, and sisters and brother, Beryl,
Daphne, and Neville, also May.Sydney Morning Herald - Mon 12 Nov 1923, p8
